@danielbeck, @slhck, would either of you like to blog about this post for Monday's QotW? I have final exams, so I don't have time to write any posts right now.

Q: How do I set PATH and other environment variables?

slhckQuestions about setting environment variables the PATH are very common here, and in most cases the answers are very similar to each other. In the future it would be nice to have a good Q/A for this. So the question is: How do I set the executable PATH and other environment variables on maj...

(If anyone else would like to write about it instead, you're welcome to; please let me know. @mokubai, @SimonSheehan, you guys might be interested)

@nhinkle I'd love to but I also have a lot to do until then

11:16 AM
@nhinkle I'd love to do it, I'm not too pressed for homework this weekend. Plus I don't know much about the topic, will be a good learning thing.

11:37 AM
Just a warning: I'm on a vacation next week and will not be doing anything work related. So someone catch up my slack

@bloodphilia any WTF posts for today?
WARNING: not having a post for three days in a row is not good. if as a editor in chief you cannot your self get a post you are responsible for getting someone to do it. You can also 'ping' me or email me and let me know. If you give me a few days notice I can take over for that week.
@ivo I can try to do the interview this next week. I'm on my way to a funeral though and so if anyone else can do it that would be nice. Do you have one already lined up?

@KronoS sorry for not having more posts, but as I've stated before, school has to come first. This is a tough time of year for many people.
It looks like thanks to @SimonSheehan we'll have a QotW for Monday, and I've got @JcrawfordOR writing me a post on that port forwarding community-faq for sometime next week

Hey @nhinkle

morning @slotishtype
don't think we've met before. how are you?

@KronoS I had a post scheduled
I can release it asap if you want

@SimonSheehan great, thanks simon! Just post the draft and @-ping me when it's ready to edit

@nhinkle We have not, and I am good. Good to meet you. It's afternoon here.

4:46 PM
@slhck I don't think @KronoS is around. I can go take a look at it if you'd like.

I didn't hear from @BloodPhilia yet so I wasn't sure if I should release it
@nhinkle Please do so!
I uploaded it yesterday and thought Tommy would check, but he hasn't been online for two days or so, at least I pinged him a few times
It's the one authored by me and uploaded yesterday

@slhck which post is it?
ah. the spotlight one?

yeah

mmk

BloodPhilia said I should just have it by next friday, so.. yeah, that's what I did :P

4:49 PM
i'm taking a look

@nhinkle you've done your job. I'm not upset with you. In fact I'm not upset with anyone... just... frustrated? I guess... lol
@slhck Please do as it appears that @Bloodphilia has not release one for today.

@KronoS totally understandable
@KronoS I'm editing his post, then I'll publish it for him. Sound good?

@nhinkle perfect! Thank you... @slhck thanks for the last min save :)

Looks good to me. I made a few minor grammar/spelling fixes and dealt with some broken formatting on the first paragraph.
Going live in 15 seconds if nobody objects

@KronoS Not a thing :P
@nhinkle Yeah I've had issues with the first paragraph

4:52 PM
@nhinkle no objections

if you want I can give you the raw HTML or Markdown

how's finals @nhinkle

@slhck I got it dealt with, no worries :)

@nhinkle Perfect, thx :)

@KronoS going well. I have a hard test Monday I'll need to study like crazy for though, so expect to not see me around here much for a few days.
btw @slhck nice post, very detailed!

4:54 PM
@nhinkle Thank you, glad to hear that
I might have something in stock for next WTFriday .. it's my story of how I almost got a criminal record because of my ISP/Telco
if that's something we can blog about :P

might be interesting :)

you know, related to Europe's new data retention policies and why they're not as foolproof as you might think

Spotlight is a great feature of OS X that many of its users love for being simple and fast. With a single click or keystroke you can search for files and applications on your Mac. Results are displayed instantaneously and often very useful.

Most of the users click the Spotlight button on the top right of your OS X menu bar or press Cmd-Space to open the Spotlight window. While this comes in handy for simple application launching or finding files you use on a daily basis, there is much more to Spotlight than this. …

guys, if you have half an hour to spare, I have a small visualisation of Superuser.com at explore.su. It is part of research I am conducting into viz support for online communities. There is a small study, if you leave a couple of comments and complete the questionnaires you are entered into a draw for 1 of 6 $50 Amazon vouchers. Sorry for cross posting and for repetition @slhck :-)

Right! I remember you, you posted that on meta, right?

@nhinkle Do it, it's fun and doesn't take much time

Don't have time right now, but I might later.

Right, I forgot. Back to learning, you! And good luck for your test!

Cheers @nhinkle , it will be up for the following week.

5:13 PM
Thanks everyone
gotta go now

Cheers @slhck

toodles

Have a gud' one

@KronoS A WTFriday post was scheduled for this Friday? I'm always 2 weeks ahead of scheduling? Except for this week since I'm on a vacation... that's why I haven't responded to all my @-pings yet! My posts are announced on the Google Doc...
As a matter of fact, I'm the only one that announces his posts in the Google Doc apparently, I think the schedule is useful to keep an overview...
@MarkSzymanski is to be scheduled the next WTFriday article...
@KronoS To be honest... I don't know if it was meant as such and I can't read through the entire transscript on my phone, but the "WARNING: not having a post for three days in a row is not good." following the @-ping to me asking for a friday post (Which was already scheduled)... Felt directed at me =/

8:03 PM
Jin and Rebecca have both told me they think we're crazy for doing 5 posts/week. They think 3 posts would be more sane and given how burned out I feel right now, I'm starting to agree

Is this public now?

user30
Ah yes, nvm. Not read the transcript in a while

@ThomasMcDonald It was secret at first, because we didn't want to world to know I was wasting cash through the blog
but since that's no longer really a secret, this room doesn't have to be either
and it would be useful for other sites to see how we do things

@slotishtype Have you find anything interesting @slotishtype? Else you could write a blog post about preliminary results and invite others to give it a spin as well
then if you leave out the amazon vouchers, the team can't really complain either :P

@IvoFlipse what amazon vouchers?
I thought people were partcipanting out of a genuine interest in science :-)

@slotishtype "1 of 6 $50 Amazon vouchers"

I was joking Ivo @IvoFlipse

@slotishtype which is why you can probably leave it out entirely

8:48 PM
I am in the process of writing a paper on preliminary results, I will send it to you when done?

@slotishtype Well I'd prefer if you write a blog post obviously, so I don't have to do anything :P
but it wouldn't have to be scientific, more an interesting take on the community interactions on SU

Yep, no problem. I would be delighted to write one. When would you like it? How many words etc? I can send something rough over to you and we can work from there.

@slotishtype I think that last part is a good idea
the length should be determined by what you have to say, not some arbitrary number I would give you ;)

No probs, I will be the end of next week if that is ok.... We have a holiday in Ireland on Monday and I is going to parrrrrrrtae.

@slotishtype Hehe, if you think your experiment can wait that long ;)

8:55 PM
lol....
chat soon, enjoy your break gotta finish this paper.

@bloodphilia sorry it seemed directed at you. Didn't mean to do that. Just needed to get the word out to everyone.
@ivoflipse I'm not sure I like switching to 3 a week but that may be our onle recouslrse for now.

@KronoS The biggest problem is that a lot of our users are students, so summer is a 'strange' period. Just as now, the exams are killing our participation

9:24 PM
Someone have a look at this query Jon Siegel made and see if you can spot any interesting trends about SU

Err, it's confusing how to interpret these things.

@TomWijsman That's why I'm crowdsourcing it

Because iTunes has a lot of views per question but less questions in overall.
itunes, multiple-monitors and partitioning stand out if you leave out the more general tags
Followed by remote-desktop, virtualbox, boot, memory, performance, browser, networking, video and command-line.

@TomWijsman stand out in what way?

Views per question.
Which I don't really find a good thing to base ourselves on, but it makes these tags stand out.
@IvoFlipse: I bet there is no way we can get unique views per tag?

9:35 PM
ask it on the meta thread

Q: Stack Exchange Community Statistics

Jon SeigelMany Meta users have asked for statistics that involve data that isn't available through the public data dumps (especially voting-related stats). In conjunction with the SE team, Greg Hewgill and myself are teaming up to bring the community these statistics! We have been granted access to all t...

Because now if I visit question A and question B in the same tag it counts up to 2 views for me, I wonder what effect it would give on the sorting if it were to only count many views as just 1 tag view.
I highly doubt such detailed information is available, as you need to explicitly write it...

@TomWijsman Jon get's access to more private info if need be

I think what I try to say is best to describe as "users / tag".

What's interesting about it that it shows which tag attracts the most unique views, as opposed to frequent visitors

Yeah, I'll go and suggest it but I highly doubt if it's available, they can still write it though...

9:51 PM
Hmm, it would be interesting to outline the solution to a Sysinternals, Xperf and perhaps WinDBG related problem in a blog post.
But as far as I have seen problems where simple or trivial, I'm rather looking for something more along the lines of Mark's Blog...
