Usually when there's a huge difference in fan opinion vs critical opinion it's either due to a sequel that wasn't what fans wanted but was still good, or due to issues that don't became obvious until you sink a lot of hours into the game. I won't go into specifics for obvious reasons, but my passwords are all a seemingly random mixture of alternating letters and numbers, with special characters tied in at the end.

There's an actual pattern I follow to make them, but if I can't remember the "seed" I used for one if you will, then it's like pulling fucking teeth trying to get in

So I just need something completely different for this so it stands out so completely I can never forget it

The benefit to my system is it's never going to get brute forced or dictionary attacked, or if someone looked over my shoulder they'd have no idea what I typed. but again it's really more a case of security theatre than anything, but by the time I realized that I was already set in my ways.

I think I would really enjoy XCOM if the missions stayed pretty much as-is, where you can lose people and slowly gain experience and build up a team and things can go catastrophically wrong with no notice, but where there was literally zero time pressure or meta-mission game making those losses even worse.

Like just let me leisurely enjoy missions and take my time fine-tuning my team in randomly generated missions and move on in the story at my own pace.

I think Darkest Dungeon is an analog for what I'm asking for.

If you lose dudes they're gone forever, but there's no time pressure saying "beat the game within x dungeon crawls or game over".

If you lose your whole team it's a setback but you can build back up and try again.

90% of my time clocked into wesnoth is probably from doing skirmishes multiplayer and/or with the AI but each time you start as a level 2 leader recruiting baby level 1s unless you change the era. there is no recall, only in the campaigns

theres no option for that continuity unless you made your own campaign

In xenonauts and the original the difference between a new soldier and an experienced one isn't as drastic because there's no special abilities, just attributes

@quartata You just recruit new rookies who have no skills and are really fragile.

So if you lose a veteran, that means 1) the encounters were already maybe a little hard for you to handle, and 2) now instead of a strong character you have a weak character.

So it's essentially a death sentence, because the encounters aren't about to get easier for you to train up your new rookie.

It's honestly an absolutely terrible piece of design.

Mark Brown had a video talking about how shitty it is.

WOTC does help some though. Missions will sometime give you a soldier, covert actions are a safe way to gain (some) experience and sometimes grant free promotions to a soldier, and psi operatives don't level up in combat at all. So once you get a psi chamber it's a really great way to safely train backup soldiers.

Every single time I thought that a particular bug is impossible it turned out I was missing something fundamental, e.g. like a typo in a variable.

I have a breakpoint on every reference, which 1) should (but I guess does not) catch any wayward sets, and 2) does indicate that it's spelled right

I once had a problem in my code that I wanted to return the row number(rn), but then treated the variable as m.

Now I use better variable names
