@Wipqozn Dinnertime
@Wipqozn ...Errr....

@GnomeSlice was just hoping I could get a second 10 hour video to trap you

@GnomeSlice what the fork.
That's disturbing and mildly pornographic.

@RavenDreamer Oh, I know what video he linked. Oh man, I couldn't stop laughing the first time I saw that.

@GnomeSlice I think I should be ashamed to say that this is not the first time I've seen that

@FallenAngelEyes Yo, that vid's amazing. THERE WILL BEEEE NOOOO SHAAAAAME

12:08 AM
@Mana Imagine if it turns out he linked an entirely different video than the one you're thinking of.
Then there'd be egg on your face 50%.

No, just clicked and confirmed. Why would you reupload that, though?

@GnomeSlice What is this I don't even...

@MarcoCeppi Well you see, Michael Bay got hold of the Brokeback Mountain license, and he's been quick to integrate the subplots from that movie into his next Transformers piece, this one centering around a transformer who turns into a steam roller.

masterpiece

12:24 AM
Oh, wow.
WoW invades the Shivering Isles!
Jyggalag take note!

> The World Map now displays the expected character levels for each zone.
It took WoW 7 years to add that?

12:45 AM
"Save the food chain; eat a Vegan"
Ugh.
This song is so punny, but it's also vaguely inappropriate.
To post or not to post...

@RavenDreamer puny or punny?

As in, "It sounds like they're saying a dirty word, but they're actually talking about Sailors"

puny is something undersized, punny is something full of puns.

Oh, whoops. Punny. Fixt.

Argh, why am I looking at TF2 trading forums when I have programming to do?
That I need to finish in the next 190 minutes.

12:50 AM
I have a few more hours, but I'm basically in the same boat.
I should probably leave Gaming Chat, so I think I shall.

Q: What's the difference between FortressCraft and Minecraft? Who cares?

Mark TrappRecently, a question has been asked about the differences between Minecraft and FortressCraft. To save you the trouble of having to click on the link, I'll copy the entire question here: What is the difference between FortressCraft and Minecraft? That's it. No context, no problem to be solv...

@Wipqozn I don't even know that song.
It's not even english.
...And yet no stars.
@Mana Uh... that wasn't it.

@GnomeSlice Whomever said 2 days wins the pool.

@Powerlord GODAMMIT, REALLY.
ಥ_ಥ

1:05 AM
The "days until @GnomeSlice posts the walking video again" pool that is.

@Powerlord Yes, I got it once you added the ping.

1:30 AM
You know, with Valve making Essential Accessories craftable in the TF2 Beta, I wonder if Max Heads are coming up down the line. Which will cause a TF2 market crash. :P

1:42 AM
@Powerlord If I recall correctly, zones originally had a color code that roughly indicated their difficulty in comparison to your current level (i.e. green is about 3+ levels below you, yellow is within a couple levels of you, orange is 3+ levels above you, red means you're going to die).

Q: What is the name of an arcade godzilla-like game where you destroy buildings?

Pubby8I played a game a few years ago on someone elses computer (I'm guessing that it was running MAME) but have forgotten the name. In the game you had a choice of monsters, I remember 2 of them: A godzilla-like creature - I think it was yellow or cyan A robot monkey whose arm extended to punch - I...

Q: Thoughts on pumping up line-height

StooshMinor nuisance, I find reading large paragraphs of text on Gaming SE rather cumbersome because the text is so close together. Pumping up the line-height to 1.4 - 1.5 em, to me makes a huge difference in readability. Examples Before After @ 1.5em

TF2 Beta just hit the Backburner with the nerf bat.
It lost it's 10% damage bonus (but keeps its crits from behind mechanic)

Er... what numbers of entrants are usable for 1 on 1 tournaments?

2:16 AM
@Powerlord I never used the backburner anyway.
The air blast is far too valuable/useful to me.

So, Firefox 7 was released today
I wonder what changed this time

Mozilla's mistake was making a big deal out of version numbers.
I don't even really know or care what version of Chrome I'm using right now, all I know is it's the latest stable
(14, apparently)
The only reason I would care what version of Firefox I'm running is because some addon developer didn't bump the maxVersion field because he's dropped off the internet or something.
(grumble grumble addon developers)

They made some fixes, added support for yet another incomplete standard and updated support of a second incomplete standard.
@Brant Apparently if you host your code on Mozilla's servers (no clue what that entails), they'll auto-update it for you.

Ah, good. They should've done that from the start.

Having said that, if you HAVEN'T, you're not allowed to set the maxVersion past the highest announced Firefox version, presently version 8.

2:24 AM
(of course there's no way they could have foreseen the huge cluster**** that addon updates became)

@Brant A mess of Mozilla's own making, I might add.
Addons are the victim in Mozilla's ePeen contest with Google.

Q: Does the intermediate AI cheat?

Nick TDoes the intermediate (or beginner for that matter) AI in League of Legends 'cheat' and get more gold than normal? Q: How can I change the Install Directory of Games in Origin

Mr SmoothIn preparation of the upcoming Battlefield 3 Open Beta, today I attempted to set up Origin to install to the proper directories. My base Origin is installed at: "E:\Games\Origin". For some reason though, Origin wants to install all of my games to: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games...

3:19 AM
@Lazers Well, if I didn't think Origin was a POC before...

4:05 AM
Oh, for $@*s sakes, Blizzard.
You've been alluding to the whole "evil time Dragons" being lead by future versions of the good time dragons since the first expansion.
But really? Going from "Nozdormu" to "Murozond"?
That's not clever. That's inane.

Are they really doing that?

4:57 AM
OMFG ... so some idiotic TV channel in Britain confuses game footage with real world one. Granted, it's from ArmA 2, so it is deliberately trying to go for realistic design. Still - aren't we gamers supposed to be the ones who can't tell reality from games? :D

Too bad the video of the "news" was taken off YouTube already. :)

I finally got around to doing that.

@Powerlord TF2 needs a promotion? :)

Q: Word of Warcraft: Mastery Skill

Marty WallaceI recently started playing WoW again after a few years, I'm not a big player (usually get over it after a couple of weeks, highest character is lvl60) but I noticed that all the skills and such have changed around (for the better I've found so far - kinda like it now). In other news, it appears we won't be seeing a lot of 'region locked' free items on Steam
for example the free 'region locked' "PC Gamer Digital" app is not available in your country
and that Install button works
it loaded an EULA that explains that's an NDA covered beta for US residents only, how convenient
I wonder if that means they'll have to go non-beta at any point

Q: Does the Wii still corrupt 1019 GameCube memory cards?

NickI just bought Eternal Darkness and intend to play it on my Wii. I apparently need a GameCube controller and memory card, so I've done some shopping for a Wavebird (man, they're expensive!) and memory card. A quick search reveals that many people have seen their Wii corrupt all their data store...

hah
went on a boat trip
went slightly off map
found a possible way to get back in map via sea
made a quick channel
saw I was going nowhere
find the way out barred by two creepers
got off boat
Minecraft runs out of memory with two creepers between me and my boat in the middle of "nowhere"
(I don't have a compass, and it wouldn't be much use)
Sometimes I think those 'out of memory' things are just made up on the spot to create cliffhangers.

11:08 AM
You don't really need a compass in Minecraft if you're on the surface anyway. Just look up to see where west/east are.
On the other hand ... I often explored cave systems for kilometres, only to end up nearly where I entered them back on the surface. :)

Pardon my Google Translate. There seem to be 4 available translator spots for Japanese, 2 for Greek and 1 for Traditional Chinese in the Steam Translation Servers' DOTA 2 translation efforts. By the way I understand things are going to work (no promises!), all STS translators will get to translate strings, but only those with the slots will get to play the closed beta to see the st

That's a bit late.

@rebeccachernoff it appears I accidentally the question onebox. (I'd assume you knew about this from Japanese.SE chat?)

Anyway, I stopped using STS after trying it out a bit and seeing how painful the system is.

12:16 PM
My current suggestion cap is 1,000...

The system itself.

If you're talking about moderators, yeah, they're (rightfully) anal.

No, I mean the system in the technical sense.
I've used stuff like KBabel and Launchpad's translation plugin.

meh, previous and back buttons are my only usability gripe

It's like going from Vim to Notepad.

12:17 PM
Launchpad confuses me

STS confuses me.

I find it easier to translate things one token at a time, instead of doing a page of stuff per time

Just give me po and mo files and let me upload them when I'm done.

and then handling page-wide and token-wide actions

I just hate the UI.

12:20 PM
Then you'll like Twitter's translation UI, except it's NDA'd.

Meh. I'll stick to F/OSS for my translation efforts.
I don't get the point of translating for people who can afford to hire an entire team of translators per language.

The point is that I'm sick and tired of cringing at poor game localization

Exactly. Community translation is not going to fix that.

I know I fixed a ton of strings for TF2

The community is great at objective, quantifiable stuff. Law of large numbers et cetera.

12:23 PM
and the Italian localization is just that - strings

For subjective, qualitative stuff like translation, the more people, the more disagreement, the worse the end product.

Tsk. There's no law of large numbers in a private small group

That's the point. It isn't a private small group.

The Italian translator group has like 6 or 7 actives
sure, the roster is like 30 or 40 people

Yes, that's why it works for Italian.

12:23 PM
@ArdaXi Well, depends. If the strings are all in text files external to the program (error messages maybe excluded), the community can fix it if they care. Or anyone could fix it themselves if they'd care enough. See - any Paradox Interactive game.

but I always see the same faces

Remember, Italy has a lot lower penetration of English.

@ArdaXi Why do you think a F/OSS project would handle it any better then

@badp Less people.
I'm talking from Dutch, not Italian.
Bilingualism rates are so high here that there are literally dozens of people capable of providing translations.
(Which also kind of obsoletes them, but whatever)

@ArdaXi Yeah, it also means far less people can be bothered with using them

12:26 PM
Oh, and yes, @badp, I love Twitter's translation UI.
1 min ago, by Arda Xi
(Which also kind of obsoletes them, but whatever)

@ArdaXi It doesn't even deduplicate suggestions

@badp Frankly, I prefer to try and use/consume works of art in the original language.

It allows you to vote.
@MartinSojka Doesn't work if you don't understand English well.

@ArdaXi Works for me - I just sit down for a few weeks to months and learn the language. :)

@MartinSojka While I agree, TF2's art is not in "Mute player" or "Press K to REMOVE"
It might be in the "Killing Gloves of Boxing" but it certainly isn't in "You cannot capture while disguised."

12:28 PM
I personally am not a fan of translated works at all.
I don't mind translating to Dutch for people if need be, but I think most people should learn English.

@ArdaXi Really?
also, good afternoon all

You're Dutch, you shouldn't complain about English

@ArdaXi + Russian, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese and Hindi, just to have the most common writing systems down. :)

@MartinSojka Greek?

@MartinSojka I think most languages in the world are slowly converging on English. Sure, Latin scripts way more so than others, but it's still happening.

12:30 PM
Even frikkin' 70yos in NL are able to speak English decently

@badp If you know Roman and Cyrillic alphabets, Greek one is easy.

@GnomeSlice I know. I was just referencing it.

@MartinSojka You might be getting Cyrillic and Greek in the wrong order there :P

Also, hullo.

@badp Cyrillic is very similar to Greek though.

12:31 PM
Yes, it's indeed a derivate

@badp I know which one came first, but Cyrillic is in wider use today. :)

@badp Eh, some, really depends.

@FallenAngelEyes They speak it well enough to give me direction to Albert Eijn and what not. I don't need to entertain philosophical discussion
(they = a sample of 1 person in Amstelveen. Highly scientific.)

Q: Battlefield 3 Beta Performance (Is my GPU the problem?)

PeterI've been attempting to play the Battlefield 3 beta but I get staggeringly bad framerates (unplayable) unless I turn down the resolution to 800x600 (ish) - even then the framrate isn't great. Notice I didn't include Thai or native American writing systems either ...

12:32 PM
@badp lol true

@badp Heijn

WO CARES ABOUT FRIGGIN Hs

@ArdaXi I was going on the assumption he was misspelling it on purpose

@FallenAngelEyes I know he is.
@badp My initials are AH.

@badp Well, I know that the French don't ...

12:33 PM
@ArdaXi Do you also lack a middle name?

@FallenAngelEyes I've pinned the name down as "Albert Einstein" with less stone and more letters on the second word

@FallenAngelEyes No, but I don't use mine.
@badp Yes, more letters. Like a h.

I ALREADY PUT A J IN THERE

@ArdaXi Ah, okay. I've found most Dutch people either have none or like... 2 or 3.

in the correct position even

12:34 PM
@badp LetterS.
@FallenAngelEyes I have one.
My mother has three.

0-2 letterS.
anyway

Yeah, Jochem's dad has 2

Woah, intense conversationing this morning.

@FallenAngelEyes My dad has two too, but he's from a Catholic family.

Ah, makes sense

12:36 PM
So, fine, Albert Hejhijnh
put moar letters.

@badp Hegigin?

While I'm endeavoring to learn Dutch and all, I kind of hate the fact that the instruction manuals and stuff for games I buy are also in Dutch :|

@FallenAngelEyes What.

When I say 'Ein' people understand me...

I've never seen any instruction manual in only Dutch.

12:37 PM
I just don't want to read it then, I dunno. Laziness I guess. :P Also the fact that I'll be playing the game in English anyway, so the translated terms don't apply.

@badp Because we are lazy.

@FallenAngelEyes Catholics tend to have at least one extra chosen at the Confirmation.

Good. Keep it that way

@FallenAngelEyes Usually, it's either both English and Dutch (and German, and French, and Italian, et cetera) or only English.

@ArdaXi I have a ton of 360 and PS3 games with only Dutch in the manuals (and other EU languages sometimes) but no English

12:37 PM
... though to be frank, I forgot mine. :)

@badp We drop the h in fast speech.
Although, we usually refer to the store as "Appie"

@badp Yeah, the T flowing into the "Heijn" will make it so the "H" is a bit dropped anyway in normal conversation speeds
@ArdaXi Yeah, I say that too
Ik ga naar de Appie, heb je iets nodig?

Except I usually don't go there out of loyalty.

Loyalty, no, convenience, yes.

But I know like 5 people that work there.

12:39 PM
Their "fresh" fruit is bleh. Never ripens.

@FallenAngelEyes You know, if I assume you're just mixing Lower Saxon with English, I can almost understand it.

@MartinSojka Haha

@FallenAngelEyes You should come to us. Fruit at the Dirk is ripe at the moment you buy it.
When you get home, it's moldy.

@ArdaXi Dirk?

@FallenAngelEyes Dirk van den Broek.

12:40 PM
@ArdaXi Hm, never been to one of those

oh god. One of our tutors in the welcome week was surnamed 'Dirk'

@badp ...surnamed?

or named
first thing I thought was "oh god I'm totally going to end up calling him either 'dick' or 'jerk'. D:"

@FallenAngelEyes We're cheaper than the AH, but the produce department sucks.

"My name is Dirk" snerk "NO IT'S DIRK"

12:41 PM
@badp My dad worked with a guy named Richard Head
3
In America, people tend to call people who are named "Richard" "Dick" for short
...His son was named William
3

@FallenAngelEyes Some people really should be more careful with their naming

Thus, Willy

Oh my god.

@FallenAngelEyes They never learn though, do they.

I'm totally not kidding either

12:42 PM
That family is cursed to misfortune.

@ArdaXi Ah gotcha

@Mana or stupidity.

I was just like WHY, WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS

I can only think of 'revenge'

@badp I'd be careful with guys named like this. Chances are, their predecessors got that name by being bad-ass mofos.

12:43 PM
haha

Dirk (Scottish Gaelic: Biodag) is a Scots word for a short thrusting dagger; sometimes a cut-down sword blade mounted on a dagger hilt, rather than a knife blade. Etymology The historical forms include durk and derk but beyond that, both Scots and English mainstream dictionaries state that the full etymology is not completely clear. A link to Germanic words such as German dolch is considered possible but as yet unsure. Scottish dirk The Scottish dirk is a traditional accessory worn with the kilt as a part of full Highland dress for formal occasions. The Scottish dirk evolved from an...

@FallenAngelEyes Especially the A-brands are cheaper with us thouh.

@ArdaXi Yeah, we usually alternate between the Appie and the Lidl, depending on what we're buying

@MartinSojka I used my years of experience in talking to people I don't know the name of to skirt around the issue, no worries

@FallenAngelEyes Lidl is cheapest, but the quality is meh.

12:44 PM
C1000 for a few things we can't get at the other 2 usually, like Hellmann's Mayo for me

@FallenAngelEyes We carry that.

@ArdaXi Usually only WC/keukenpapier there

But...

not food

C1000 is a subsidiary of Ahold. As such, they have similar stock.

12:45 PM
And the random stuff they have for sale there each week
We've picked up stuff like our toaster and dustbuster there
I still have difficulties telling gender for Dutch names that I'm unfamiliar with

For me, it's usually intuitive.
Until I get it horribly, horribly wrong.

Oh, there's an official statement about the ArmA II footage used by ITV as real ... as expected, it's the standard "Ooops, human error, we're sorry ... we'll keep doing shoddy journalistic work as usual, no worries!"

Like I associate "Dirk" with being a male name, but "Dirkje" is a girl's name here I guess

> The events featured in Exposure: Gaddafi and the IRA were genuine but it would appear that during the editing process the correct clip of the 1988 incident was not selected and other footage was mistakenly included in the film by producers. This was an unfortunate case of human error for which we apologise

@ArdaXi Well yes, but you're Dutch :P

12:50 PM
@FallenAngelEyes I feel sorry for a girl called "Dirkje"
Dirk is very, very pronounced male.
It's also very 60s.

One of Jochem's 2nd cousins has that name, she's about... 6 now? 7?

So basically it would be like the Dutch equivalent of Dirkette?

Not really, actually. It's more like "Little Dirk"

@ArdaXi With guys like Dirk Nowitzki around, it's actually getting some more popularity right now in Germany.

@Mana Yeah
well, little Dirk
What ^ said

12:51 PM
@ArdaXi snerk

"je" makes stuff diminutive, like Spanish's "ito"

Or German "chen"

Uh ... Dirk already is diminutive. The normal form is "Dietrich".

@MartinSojka Well, now it's supersmall :P

@MartinSojka Err... that's not how it works.
Unless Dirk means "little Dietrich"

12:53 PM
Dirk is just the shorter form for Dietrich, neh? Like Dick for Richard?

That's what I thought.

Also it is surprisingly warm today

@ArdaXi It used to mean that - a shortening among people who know each other well, or diminutive for children named like this. Then, as is typical of this stuff, it turned into a name of its own right.

@FallenAngelEyes Maybe in the more rural areas that's normal.
I live in the least rural area of the Netherlands.

Haha, true
Though I think the Hague has higher population density, iirc

12:55 PM
Netherlands has rural areas? Why the hell did they have to create the polders then? :D

@MartinSojka Because, did you see how small the country is?

@MartinSojka Go way west or way south or way north.

We wanted to put them in the lake, but apparently people don't like to drown so we took the water away.

But anything here in the Randstad is very densely populated.

@ArdaXi :Sounds DwarfFortress-y.

12:57 PM
@MartinSojka Pretty much.
is a dorf

@ArdaXi When we used to have Discovery Science, we'd sometimes watch those shows like Very Big Things or Mega Ships and such, and whenever they had something to do with working with water, some guy with a Dutch accent would be on, we'd laugh

@FallenAngelEyes I hate Dutch accents.

@Mana

I have nothing for or against them, necessarily. It's not like my Dutch isn't full of my American accent (though I do make an effort).

@FallenAngelEyes It's just... it reminds me of the way I used to talk.

12:59 PM
@GnomeSlice mm?

And it's a bit painful to listen to, for me.
