@Powerlord Yes, please.
So, I was editing the Source Mapchooser Extended plugin yesterday to backport a change from my dev version to the stable version.
Oh wait, I might have talked about this already.
15 hours ago, by Powerlord
I just pushed a new version of Mapchooser Extended to fix issues with KillTimer being called instead of the timer naturally ending.
Whoops, I did.
Granted, it's counter-intuitive, because its Action handler has to return Plugin_Stop to stop the timer.
whacks SourceMod Devs Even if it's the same constant value, give it a new name, like... Timer_Stop
Did I mention I never managed to kill anybody with that damn scatter gun? Maybe it's the ping, maybe it's me, but...
14:58
@failbadp The scattergun is... weirdly... a close-range weapon. Well, it does damage at longer range, but it isn't until you get in close range that said damage is reasonable.
Also, how its shots work depends on if the server has tf_use_fixed_weaponspreads on or not.
@Powerlord O_RLY
If said cvar is on, they shoot in a 3x3 square. If it's off (which is the default), all 9 pellets from it shoot in random directions in a cone-shape in front of you.
11 pellets if you're using the Force-a-Nature.
meh, I know I'm cycling all classes and I still get consistently owned right now
But, because they spread out in a cone, less of them hit the father you are away.
@failbadp Did I mention that TF2 operates a lot like Rock, Paper, Scissors? :P
Like... Sniper beats Heavy, Heavy beats Scout, Scout beats Sniper...
Well, assuming that the Sniper can't headshot the Scout... they're harder to headshot than the other classes. :P
and whatever I do I get beaten
I have 5 dominations right now
15:04
While the Flare Gun is tempting as Pyro, it takes away your Shotgun... your best weapon against other Pyros.
well, the game's over, so I can't get 6
@failbadp Yes, I saw that the first time.
Unfortunately, a lot of classes have a learning curve, even ones you think wouldn't.
Also, Spies and Snipers when you're playing Soldier/Heavy suck.
meh, I usually go medic and do decently
This ga--- HEADSHOT
With Medic, at least you can get revenge/domination by healing.
@failbadp: OK, what map are you on now?
(I was going to suggest a class based on map)
Freight
15:09
Having said that, medics can't hurt unless you have like 3 or more already on a 12-person team..
Hmm... defensive Engineers can be OK... Offensive, too. Snipers are really good near the center point, but less-so at the other four.
Medics are a must for taking the final point if there's a defense.
Oh, I almost forgot... Huntsman snipers can be pretty good on Freight, too, but enemy Heavies kinda put a stop to those.
Total of 2 points :D
If you do choose another class, don't forget that there are water routes from above the second points to the middle area.
Water routes tend to be favored by Spies, though.

Oh right, one important note about water: Several maps have bridges that go over water areas. In Well and Freight, those bridges are close to the water, but still up far enough for you to surface so you don't drown.
Also, don't underestimate the damage you can do with mini-sentries as Engineer with Gunslinger... especially if you're running around shooting them with your pistol at the same time.

Valve has support for bacon, but someone has to cook it.
By the way, I heard a nasty rumor: The Firefox crew plans on releasing more versions of Firefox in order to get Microsoft to send them more cakes.

@YiJiang Can't say they didn't try.

@Powerlord I know, that was a joke too, of course the Chrome team doesn't get one
They've been baking each other cakes since, I dunno, the first version of Firefox?
@ArdaXi That's because you have 3D rendering enabled. If you go into about:firefox, then scroll down to...
@YiJiang Firefox 2, I think.
@Powerlord I included that tag on purpose. It's an old joke about that cake.
However, Netscape and the IE Team had more... interesting trades.
if firefox 4 only for win7 like ie?
17:35
@RonanForman Nope, it has an XP version.
@RonanForman Also Mac and Linux.
but it doesn't auto update
Firefox 4 for WinXP tries to use Direct3D to do acceleration instead of Direct2D or so I've heard.
@RonanForman It does, it just doesn't silently auto-update. Minor versions are pushed out automatically, and major ones after one or two months after release
You can still go to Help, Check for Updates to see it. Provided you have the latest 3.6 release.
If you don't have the latest 3.6 release, it'll offer 3.6.16 instead.

Honestly, though, I don't know if Opera 11's look was copied from Chrome or vice versa.
@Powerlord I think Chrome was inspired by Opera, then Opera was... more inspired by Chrome.
Chrome was inspired by Opera. Opera copied Chrome.
I do know that when Chrome was announced, its draw was really something like 10 features other various browsers had combined into one.
I even made a blog post about said features, iirc.
I'd have to look for it.
I'm sticking with chrome
I remembered when I first tried Chrome, it had trouble handling transparent pngs, and I swore when I saw the effect of that
17:47
Speaking of bad first impressions of programs, has Windows Media Player ever sorted out its issues with VBR MP3s?
Last version I tried to use was whatever version shipped with Vista, and it still had issues with VBR mp3s.
Don't worry, Windows Media Player is still a bad program.
It's better than Winamp perhaps.
Winamp at least has the Windowshade button.
The text-shadow bug that afflicted Chrome when I first used it still affects it now. Yeah...
So I can get it out of my way but still have the controls to mess with them.
@YiJiang The same issue that badp had where it just says "Naw...I don't feel like rendering this text anymore"?
17:50
Oh yay, I get to waste my time rewriting some code another developer removed... because some of our other code changed, I can't just revert his changes.
@TimStone No, the one on Windows where it looks like it stops anti-aliasing text-shadow'd text. The effect can be pretty horrendous sometimes
I was sufficiently annoyed that I went and starred the issue to receive updates on the status of the bug at the end of last year
@YiJiang Ah, yeah, this is a Windows-specific bug too. I'm not sure if you saw when he was having the problem, but basically if you use particular fonts with text-shadow, it runs into an error with certain glyphs and stops rendering the text, heh.
Though it looks like there's finally some progress after almost two years sitting on the bug list

Yeah, I'm not a huge mailing list fan.

Happy 12th anniversary! Only one more year to go to become a teen!
> Bug 915 - implement inheritance of alignment attributes from columns (align, valign, char, charoff, (lang, dir)?)
Yup, definitely looks like the one you're talking about
18:09
Yup, likely it is!
Incidentally, despite CSS1 requiring table cell tags to support alignment stuff, it conspicuously disappeared before the CSS2 spec was released.
Mozilla browsers remain the only ones I've seen to not support it.
It was closed and then reopened; there's a (according to the comments) a half working patch entered in 2007. The dev who last commented noted that a significant amount of work will still need to be done to make this work
This comment here bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=915#c353 noted that none of the other browser have implemented this
@YiJiang That would be wrong. Let me see if I still have screenshots of one of my 2005 test pages.
Sorry, 2006 test pages
At least, it points to what looks like equivalent unresolved bugs on the Webkit, KHTML and Chromium issues list
Note how Opera and IE7 both center the Sequenced By and File Size columns while Firefox doesn't.
The Chromium bug report says that it works in IE
Right, so IE and Opera has this, Chrome, Safari and Firefox doesn't... ?
18:21
@YiJiang Yes, and at the time I took those, there were no Webkit browsers on Windows.
Those screenshots predate Chrome by two years. :P
It's also important to remember that KHTML, Safari, and Chrome are all different versions of the same rendering engine.
I thought Safari, eh... yeah, first Windows Safari version was 3, which is in 2007
So, if one doesn't support it, naturally the other two won't either.
@YiJiang Those screenshots are from 2006.

@Aardvark There's a running gag where I'll just randomly start talking about when I'm bored. I also usually put it in chat as a tag instead of a word.
would you perhaps be one of our redditor users? :)
I rarely visit Reddit's... site.
...but if you play TF2 on Reddit's Great Lakes server, you've likely seen me there. Sometimes on Midwest, too, but not as often.
18:35
Today I added a few more 24/7's to my blacklist
It's now grown to 130/510 servers.
All pretty much full, although one has to wonder how many of those players are bots and how many are actual humans.
My bots answer is woefully inadequate :/
You don't see bots that often in TF2, namely because the game wasn't originally built for them.
In the same vain as Adjustment Team, I've now pulled a copy of The Machine Stops, for your enjoyment
Does it have any bacon?
@Powerlord Oh, you'd be surprised. I surely was this morning.
@Powerlord Eh... no
18:41
I'm going to try and idle on clan servers now. They'll have dead times, they'll be much harder to play on, they'll be on the wrong continent but at least they have actual humans.
@failbadp The game does support bots now, but most maps don't have AI nodes or navigation meshes... strangely, TF2 tends to have both files. I'm not sure if they're supposed to work together or what.
You can have the game autogenerate one of the two, but as you noticed on cp_egypt, it sometimes gets them wrong.
@ArdaXi No, Rockmelt copied chrome.
Ah yes, Rockmelt. Isn't that by Marc Andreessen, the guy behind Netscape?
18:56
@Powerlord IIRC one is for NPCs (like enemies in HL2) and one is for bots (NPCs playing like humans)
@ArdaXi Well, HL2DM has .ain files, TF2 appears to have .nav files.
Exactly. No bots in HL2DM.
@ArdaXi I thought HL2DM did support bots.
@Powerlord Only third-party.
L4D however, uses .nav meshes exclusively, for the bots. The infected don't need any advice on where to go.
Which makes making L4D maps much easier than most Source mods, since you don't need to map out a graph throughout the entire map.
So, I need to decide what to work on next in mapchooser_extended. Basically, I've taken a copy of the SourceMod Mapchooser and I'm reimplementing the features mapchooser extended added to it.
The obvious part is done, changing how the timer works.
19:02
So you're recreating the entire project from scratch?
@ArdaXi Basically.
Err, why?
@ArdaXi Because it's a horrible mess that randomly makes calls across include files.
@Powerlord Ah.
The work I've done rewriting it already allows me to split the sounds module into a separate plugin.
Basically, there are issues now with how it does text output.
There's a problem when %%%% still doesn't display a % because of how many different layers of printf it's passing through.
19:05
It's incredibly layered to start with.
There are also issues of it using the server's translation language rather than deciding based on the user's locale (however that work in SourceMod)
A Sourcemod plugin is hosted by Sourcemod, which is hosted by Metamod, which is hosted by Source, which is hosted by Gabe knows how many layers, which is hosted on the OS.
Sourcemod seems like quite a mess to me.
@ArdaXi Well, I'm not sure how much processing MetaMod actually does for SourceMod.
I'm too lazy to check to see if all MetaMod does is load other plugins into the game engine.
Anyway, the next thing I should work on is likely how the maplist is displayed.
Oh right, I need to look up how to load external files into an array in SourceMod.
Wait... maybe I can make the "official map list" functionality a separate plugin and not have to load it from a file... just make it an optional dependency.
Basically, I want to move it out of the plugin itself so it can be updated without having to update the entire plugin.

19:20
@failbadp That would be a hilarious one to add.
Actually, there's at least one cvar that's going away. Simply because it's not necessary any more since the functionality is identical to that provided by SourceMod 1.3.
And SourceMod 1.3 is several years old now, iirc.
Hell, I don't think there are even any games you can run from SourceMod 1.2 now, thanks to Valve moving them all to the OrangeBox engine, which causes errors in SourceMod 1.3.4ish until 1.3.5 and MetaMod 1.8.2 came out.
@failbadp Ooh. And if you turn it off: "As part of a previously mentioned required test protocol, we can no longer lie to you."

One of my friends got mad because I said "That would be your mother" instead of "No, that would be... your mother!"
Really?
19:45
@ArdaXi Yes, really.
Wow.
Gah. On Windows, the OK button is on the left and the cancel button on the right. On Linux, it's reversed.
@ArdaXi Uh. Really? Never noticed.
What are you using @Arda, GNOME or KDE or something else?
@failbadp It's the kind of thing you get used to. KDE.
That's probably why I never noticed :P
At least in Dialogs, OK is always on the left in Windows. However, Cancel has a nasty tendency to move around in other types of screens
19:48
Reading has the nasty tendency of being useful
@failbadp Read? People do that?
Now I need to redo my loadouts to account of my new items.
If you've done something a couple dozen times, you get used to it.
Like installing Chrome extensions.
@failbadp Razorback, seriously?
Buffalo Steak Sandvich or Dalokhos Bar?
19:50
I've never heard this line in-game:
> slowly There really was a cake...
@ArdaXi It plays in super slo-mo
@Powerlord I'm kinda clueless, I never play Sniper anyway.
I figured having a warning could've been useful.
I know. I've heard it in the GLaDOS I built on OSGrid once.
And, the faster your computer is, the more likely the chance she won't actually say it before you're pulled up to the ending sequence.
It's played outside the chambers.
19:52
Eyelander or Half-Zatoichi?
@failbadp I personally don't use the Razorback because it only blocks one hit.
Huntsman or Rifle?
Choices choices.
@failbadp Eyelander lowers your HP until you get some kills with it.
@Powerlord What's the alternative? Don't backstabs one-shot kill you anyway?
That makes a two-shot kill
@failbadp Yes, but Spies will just shoot you instead... which is a 2-3 shot kill depending on the gun.
19:54
@Powerlord The Zatoichi doesn't force me to stick with a non-explosive gun however
@Powerlord It stuns the Spy though, making him easy pickings for a somewhat skilled Sniper or a teammate.
@ArdaXi See what I said about shooting instead.
Arguably, if you're using the Huntsman, you have more of a reason to use the Razorback, as you'll be closer to the front lines.
I use Jarate instead, though... puts out allies on fire, makes enemies take mini-crits, makes Spies it hits visible when they cloak...
An option I don't have yet :)
and makes the Buskwacka way more useful than it should be...
@failbadp True... Jarate's an unlock, though, so if you did a few achievements you could get it. :P
Also I'm not sure why a soldier might want to give up a shotgun for a buff banner
19:57
I have all the Sniper achievements. The hardest one was one where you have to kill a Heavy and his Medic with the Huntsman.
Particularly since a Huntsman headshot won't kill an overhealed Heavy.
However, Jarate + Huntsman Headshot Heavy + Huntsman Bodyshot Medic finally got it for me.
Wait... Valve already released Series 13-15 crates?
Geez, they JUST added 10-12. :/
