12:11 AM
I return to serve

omg @tzenes, I tried uploading my measurements, so others could have fun with it
but I forgot to compress them

:178334 make me a sandwich

been uploading 3 folders with 24*16Mb files

that usually helps

while compressed each folder is only 1Mb :P
I feel like a newb

12:12 AM
@alexanderpas I'm not sure how a digital sandwich helps you

sudo make me a sandwich

@Jin the horizontal bars seem a bit thick
@alexanderpas password:
@Jin also, green+white makes my stomach hurt. What are our chances of getting something darker for the text?

Sorry, Try again.

:178363 it is already #106606

12:31 AM
Augh, wish that person wouldn't use "CoH" in their titles all the time, totally throws me off :P

edit it out

Well it's just a personal thing, didn't think we should really edit for that stuff.

this is why acronyms are bad

I'm a MMOer, so CoH always parses as "City of Heroes" to me :P

I'm not a MMO-er so I always misread CoH as CoD

12:33 AM
another reason to edit it, ambig.

3 hours later…
3:05 AM
it's silent in here...

chirp chirp

shouldn't you be in bed? :P

I'm too busy futzing with blizzards new shinies now that I have access to them

Shouldn't you too? :P

hehe, the Cataclysm beta?
I'm waiting for my GF to come back from her night shift @FallenAngelEyes
and still exporting data...

3:10 AM
:178863 Yep.
The 'single player' aspects of WoW have just gotten so ridiculously good it's insane

Wow, where's she work? AFAIK, night shift jobs aren't as common here in the NL.

I don't dare to get drawn back in
nurse @FallenAngelEyes :) every nurse has at least 3 to 6 night shifts a month

Ah gotcha

are the quests fun again @LessPop_MoreFizz?

I'm about to head to bed though, you guys have a good evening

3:12 AM
I quite leveling up my Death Knight
I was too busy with meta game stuff

amazingly soo.

gaming the AH, raiding, arena

and they revamped 1-60 too

and I was busy migrating to another country at that moment
yeah, that would be the fun part to play
I like questing and grouping up
though to me it's like a competition, so instead of enjoying it and taking it slow

:178889 Yeah, that's why I like being in the beta. I can take it slow, and enjoy the environments and the story and read quest text now
so that when it goes live I can dash through it as fast as possible
but I'm kinda obliged to do that :/

3:14 AM
I race through it :P

I fully intend to race through on live.

though I did miss the Burning Crusade spirit in this expansion
I remember how difficult Black Temple was for a casual guild

Yeah, raid progression in wrath was increvibly fucked
all indications are they're looking to make things a bit more bc-like with cataclysm raids, so I have my fingers crossed

well in BC you needed the right attitude to make it
if we had that attitude in WotLK than in wouldn't have been much fun :P
people were slacking far too much for my liking

among other things.
the badge system got way out of control in wrath
and then in ICC you have nonsense like the stacking zonewide buff, so now everyone does +30% more damage/healing and has 30% more HP.
Which really feels like it cheapens having accomplished the stuff without it. :/

3:18 AM
I remember the night they launched the pre-WotLK patch
we ran through BT in break-neck pace
eventually made it to Brutallus, that was awesome

I remember that night because we finally killed Kil'Jaeden that night and it felt so cheap. :(

we even beat Vash and Kael Tash, while it was no longer necessary, but we thought it was no use trying Archimonde if we didn't beat them first
that sucks @LessPop_MoreFizz :(
still very well to get that far
we only raided two nights a week and tried to have a third one regularly
can you imagine how hard it has been
I remember that my Wow subscription ran out on our KT-kill night

Oh, I bet.

I soooooooo freaked out
I was still on vent, but couldn't get back in to the game
and I played arena with a very casual playing guy, managed to get the S3 weapons (during the season)
breaking through 1900 is a bitch

I always hated arena
Not a big pvp person in wow.

3:25 AM
ah well they were good times, but I could have gotten an extra degree with the amount of time wasted :P
I'm a warlock, what more can I say?

for some reason I'm still awake
this is frusterating for me

I know my arena experience pulled us through the dungeon on the blood elve island
:O how come @tzenes?

I'm still at work

Jin
@tzenes which horizontal bars are you talking about?

that boss fight with 5 random bosses I think it was @LessPop_MoreFizz

3:27 AM
:178953 Delrissa. That was a fun fight. :)

I'm getting another coffee, I'm still at work @tzenes

oh maybe that's just compression artifacts

yeah as a warlock, I had to banish, fear, seduce and still dps :P

yeah, never mind

:178959 They tried to get the same feel in ToC with Faction Champs and kinda succeeded.

3:28 AM
sorry @Jin the fake screenlines you put in are susceptible to artifacts when the screen is resized
it mistook them as a result

it was too bad that our raid leader was a chicken and didn't dare to experiment

Honestly, the most fun thing about both of those fights was the schadenfreude I got to enjoy when people whined about them.

there are so many ways where you could exploit special class abilities to do awesome stuff in boss fights :P

Jin
@tzenes ah i see.

hehe, you german @LessPop_MoreFizz? :P

3:30 AM
:178969 Nope, I'm a New Yorker that likes big words. :P

hehe, it's an universal word apparently, just like apartheid

fugeddaboutit

btw @tzenes where did I have to go again to buy you a beer ;)

haha
when are you coming to seattle?

hmmm I don't think I can take such a large detour :(

3:32 AM
damn

I could have been there this week, quite an important conference there right now

maybe next year
which one?

well if my own company get's off the ground, I should have more excuses to go visit conferences ;)
iFab

cool
we just had the BrowserDay here
that was a huge success

guess it was about browsers?

3:34 AM
vaguely
mostly it was about the internet
Mozilla looked like they had their heads up their asses

hows' that for vague: the internet :P

Microsoft looked like they were trying to appologize
Google looked on top of things though
their new Chrome features are hot
plus: chrome in ie
they have an extension for ie which will render your site using chrome

which 'new' features are you aiming at

without actually installing chrome

since I'm running 3 different versions at the moment :P
Chrome Frame yeah :)

3:36 AM
mostly CSS3, webworkers, etc
their speed performance wasn't super impressive
but it made it clear which direction they're going

would they still plan on making that for IE9 too?

I think so
mostly because it uses their definition of HTML5
and not MS'

good point
I'm very interested in their Web Store
hope they also finally come up with a decent version of Checkout

I dunno about webstore it feels like another attempt to copy apple's app store
Apple had the advantage of really locking down the platform

off course

3:39 AM
I'm not sure Google can do that

but I'm more interested in the fact that people will start taking web development serious

well google and mozilla would love that

plus you shouldn't underestimate the fact that in theory it's platform agnostic

Mozilla came out and said they wanted to turn desktop apps into a thing of the past

Google doesn't care if you visit their store in IE9 as long as you search with Google

3:41 AM
actually if you're on chrome they don't even care if you use Bing

btw any browser that doesn't enable Google Instant asap should die
nope, I figure as much

Yahoo switched
from google to bing

but the NaCl+ should be interesting too
give some more horsepower to the browser

I kind of dislike the move to browser based apps

the problem is that a lot of companies think it's all too complicated and futuristic

3:43 AM
it feels like its too much like JVM

I think that the transition between XP and Vista towards 7 has shown that we can't rely on the OS vendors either

I'm not sure that's true
just look at Ubuntu
or OSX
certainly Vista was a mistake
but XP -> 7 is nice

well I'm not even sure if we can blame MS for everything with Vista
since a lot of problems were caused by faulty drivers
now perhaps they could have cooperated more with hardware vendors
but they can't go slacking and then start blaming MS

haha

Creative still hasn't made a Vista/7 compatible driver for my soundcard

3:46 AM
hey did you watch TLO in the GSL?
also, Creative sucks

nope, I've been busy exporting :P
but if you link I'll stop chatting with you and watch it ;)
nice way to say: shut up ;P

sorry
I was watching it at the same time

crap :(

lolz

I want a Knights Ferry, just because it sounds awesome

3:50 AM
anyway, I'm inherently distrustful of browser based apps
but we'll see if it pans out

privacy?

no, it just feels like you're trading jvm for sandbox js

which is why NaCl+ allows you to write natively to the processor (within a small sandbox true)

that's what I'm saying
didn't we learn this lesson already?

the sandbox is most important to prevent malware from escaping

3:54 AM
doubtful
malware already exploits loopholes
you're just changing where those loopholes are

not to say native software is safe: Adobe Reader anyone?

that's what I'm saying
you're not fixing the problem, just moving it

though what if you have a program that doesn't need high performance, like simple management stuff then whats the downside?

well that's what Google/Mozilla is betting on
wow, Artosis makes these Ultras look so beefy

well in my case, my fathers company needs program to store his patients anamnesis
than a web app has so many advantages (even if it runs on your own server)
what do you like most about that match btw @tzenes?

4:02 AM
Just the way he uses Ultras

ah not there yet :P

he goes Ultra/Ling and turns that match around

I like how he counters with those banelings

oh, I'm watching the next game
Got confused
er... I'm watching Artosis vs NEX
But TLO's G2 is nice with the roach agression
sadly TvZ is brutal right now

ill go watch the day9 daily
what's the best counter for this or that?
> why dont you just kill him?

4:11 AM
haha

I start to see that a lot in my own play
where I should have gone in for a kill much earlier
but my micro needs so much improvement, that I often fail to do it well

I wouldn't worry about micro so much
until you get higher its more important to macro well

I mean I just suck at controlling my units effectively and/or building the right/enough units to simply kill him
as for macro, I've actually survived a couple of games because I had expanded already and managed to survive a big push and come back with avenges

Jin
btw i'll be converting the design to css soon. i haven't seen any comments on meta. about it. but judging from the feedback here it seems most people are OK with it. (except for some font rendering issues)

we are ;)
your designs have been spot on so far, so no reason to doubt you
and nothing is set in stone

4:25 AM
Ivo, macro is less about expanding and more about building a big army
yes you expand to do that, but if you're not building that big army there is little point
a good example is Terran 3 Rax
you can just keep those Rax busy and you'll end up with a decent army
and if you expand you can add on 3 more Rax

Jin
are you guys getting Halo Reach tomorrow?
i bought Halo3 ODST this weekend and my kids love it. i beat the story mode, enjoyed it

the problem I got with this was a Protos coming in with High Templar, then a Terran come in with Banshees

yeah
I loved ODST, such an emersive story

so should I built anti-air stealth buildings or air?
I'm not getting it

plus Nathan Fillion
Banshee's are largely harassment units
they can't stand up to much aa

4:28 AM
and what to do against a terran in 1v1 if they start to built tanks? they rip through my marines

so basically any aa+detection
against tanks the counter is usually more tanks
that or you do drops
medivac + backdoor

I guess my big problem is prioritizing things, to make sure I'm safe against most plays

BAD
BADBADBADBADBADBAD
> to make sure I'm safe against most plays
REALLY REALLY BAD

regarding medivacs, should I first get 3 barracks and THEN go for medivacs?

never never never think: safe against X

4:29 AM
I mean, I get owned by stealth if there's no stealth detection, so I can't completely skip them

its a waste of time and resources

so if I go all out 3 barracks, without thinking about it
I'm dead whenever I meet them

if you don't scout banshees, you don't need stealth detection
this is a mistake most people make
You think to yourself: well he can go banshees so I need stealth detection, and he can go tanks so I need medivacs, and he can go BC so I need vikings...
AND ITS ALL WRONG

so should I send an SCV to scout or change my base to that scanning thing early?

ok, so here is the thing, there are a LARGE number of ways to scout

4:32 AM
I know I shouldn't try to built around everything, but it's just like leaving your base open against zerg as terran, your just waiting for them to kill your SCVs if you're not really fast on units

you're entire mind set is counter productive
You're making a mental checklist of: how do I deal with X

so what would you recommend?

and the result is you're shooting yourself in the foot
First you need a strategy: 3 Rax
next you need a follow up: stim/medivac
finally you need an endgame: siege tanks
Now if he goes banshees, you have marines
if he goes tanks, you have marauders
your strategy handles most things
but don't think: I need X incase he builds Y
instead think: I have X how can I use that to beat Y

well like I said: I tried to focus on maximizing unit building, but got beaten quite badly a couple of times in a row

I feel you, and I understand that can be frusterating, but there are a lot of reasons why that can be

4:35 AM
now I guess your main point is that I didn't scout
and that's my own fault

if you try to do everything you're doing to end up being poor at everything and good at nothing

so then my question is, what unit should I sacrifice when for scouting?

scouting happens in a number of ways, not all of which are sacrifices
sending a Hellion up his ramp to take a hit will show you a ton about his composition, and you can usually run quick enough to keep it alive
Flying a Barracks over his base will give you a lot of intel

I mean sacrifice taking a SCV from production

and most of the time you can save it
there are a lot of ways to scout
but if your core strategy is tough, you don't need a ton of intel, just a little
so if you're 3 rax and suddenly you see banshees heading to your base, you've already got it covered
a single scan and stimmed marines will take care of it

4:38 AM
only if you can detect them :P

You don't need to be preparing 3 minutes in advance

I guess I'm not flexible enough :P

Usually them shooting is a big hint

yeah, but I guess another mistake was not having teched up scanning

you should normally be getting OC on 15-16
if for the minerals alone
I actually like to use a barracks as my scout
tends to see more

4:40 AM
build it near his base then I reckon?

sometimes I just fly it from my base to his

would you recommend flying in for a harras if he doesn't scout himself?

you can, if you're on desert oasis or some other maps
but usually just scouting is enough

well guess I'll be playing Terran only then for this week :P

well if you want the protoss equivilent its 3 gate

4:44 AM
no, I suck as protos as long as I don't get the chance to make loads of carriers :P
I mean if they come with mass marine/marauder medivacs
my bunch of zealots are fucked

well ideally you get stalkers too

but again: I guess I didn't have enough zealots to start with

and maybe a colossus

then it's no longer 3 gate :P but 3 gate + robotics facility :P

and mmm isn't 3rax, its 3rax + starport
why does it feel like Idra is the only good Zerg player?

4:52 AM
I don't know, because he is?

its just because Yang Chia Cheng isn't in the GLS

5:37 AM
hates databases

I hate relational databases
I don't mind the other type

heh. I've been banging my head against a relational algebra problem for close to 5 hours. I am now convinced that I've made my life harder than necessary

ask it on SO :P
but don't forget pictures, else people don't vote!

Not allowed :-p it's for class. All I can do is mope around chat for meta-sympathy :(

can you give us a taste of the problem?

5:41 AM
Oh I can tell you the problem if you like, but I can't accept any help from you.

does it comfort you that I'm still exporting data?
I've been doing that probably since you left

Consider the tables Frequents(drinker, bar), Likes(drinker, beer), Sells(bar, beer), with obvious meanings. We say that a bar b is redundant if there exists a bar b1 such that (i) b1 sells all the beers that b sells, and (ii) All the drinkers that frequent b and like some beer that b sells, also frequent b1. Write a relational algebra query to find all redundant bars. Do not use the aggregate operator or joins.

shoot @mechko
awe, no joins

I'm not entirely sure about the joins part though. I think we may be able to / required to use one
but exactly one

well joins would help
because then you can do things like:SELECT *
FROM sells INNER JOIN likes
ON bar.beer= drinker.beer;

5:45 AM
relational algebra

or where
you get what I mean

not sql

I don't know the relational algebra for a join
Relational algebra, an offshoot of first-order logic (and of algebra of sets), deals with a set of finitary relations (see also relation (database)) which is closed under certain operators. These operators operate on one or more relations to yield a relation. Relational algebra is a part of computer science. Introduction Relational algebras received little attention until the publication of E.F. Codd's relational model of data in 1970. Codd proposed such an algebra as a basis for database query languages. (See "Implementations" below.) Relational algebra is essentially equivalent in e...
ah, it doesn't do sub headings en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
but like, a Natural join
that looks like what you want
so you can select the drinkers who like the same beer as the bars sell
and then you join that with if they frequent that bar

like he said: he can't accept your help haha

then you do an anti join of that between bars?
I don't know, I'm not good at relational algebra
oops, sorry

5:50 AM
you make it sound so obvious even I get what you mean

I'm sure there is some reason what I said doesn't work
DB was my worst subject

heh it's ok. I'm kind of ignoring what he's saying right now (no offense)

sok
none taken
anyway I need to go home and get some dinner
its like 11pm here

its 7:50 AM here
need to get to bed...

bbl

5:51 AM
gah. it's 2 am here

that surely diminishes your programming skills ;)

I have to do this problem and then 5 more like it tomorrow, fit in class, birthday party, and prepare for my first class on wednesday. I'm scared poopless about teaching in front of 30 undergrads when I haven't even seen the syllabus for the class. Though on Wednesday, I get my Droid 2 at approximately 530 pm, which makes me happy.

hehe, is it your own birthday?
first time teaching is always scary

well today (yesterday now) is (was) my birthday and tomorrow (today) is my friends b'day. We have two parties (I'm 4 beers down tonight and I was still pretty productive)

woehoe well still happy birthday :)

5:56 AM
Pardon my temporal confusion. I'm still not sure whether 2am counts as the day you are still awake from or the day that you plan to awake into later
and thanks

the day you plan to awake again
it's just an early siesta

on that note, goodnight. cig break followed by sleep and waking up in 5 hours to study like a monkey on crack.

hehe, sleep tight!
