This is a general discussion room, but please feel free to create more subject-specific rooms (a single room with every possible discussion isn't very helpful)

Hello world! We have a chat room.
Is there anybody out there?

Welcome to private beta, everyone!
I'm no expert on Ethereum, but I can claim to have been in several private betas on Stack Exchange, and I mod two current beta sites. I'll be around if you want advice/help/whatever.
Feel free to ping me here if you've got issues, questions, whatever.

I really hope there are thorough answers to the "How do I start mining Ether" questions for GNU and Windows

That sounds useful, but be careful they don't end up being basic dumbed-down guides :)
Though if they're good, who knows, I might see if I can get into it at all.

Q: How do we edit or remove a Tag from the Tags section?

user75798If a Tag has been entered by mistake, for example, the spelling is wrong, how can the Tag be changed?

Q: Chat early, chat often!

ArtOfCodeWith a title shamelessly stolen from the countless "Vote early, vote often" posts around the network. In the frenzy of the launch of a new private beta, there's a whole lot of activity going on and it's easy to focus on the Q&A. Remember, though - building the community around this site is impor...

Q: Are "find the code/package/link" questions on topic here? Don't we need a close reason for those?

PaulOn Stack Overflow find the software, find a tutorial, etc. is off topic. Questions asking us to recommend or find a book, tool, software library, tutorial or other off-site resource are off-topic for Stack Overflow as they tend to attract opinionated answers and spam. Instead, describe the p...

Q: How do we edit comments?

user75798If a comment needs to be amended, how can we edit it? There seems to be no Edit option. Where is the link to change text?

ArtOfCode, would you be able to write a "How to" reply to one of the "How do you start mining Ether on ..." questions? I could try to follow the instructions and provide feedback.
It would surely gain epic Rep for a question answered!

@user75798 I could try, but I'd fail pathetically. I have literally zero experience on Ethereum; I barely know what it is since I Googled it this morning expecting this launch.

@ArtOfCode Thanks. I think it would be best for somebody with more experience at this. Any volunteers?

Q: Do we steer opinion questions toward becoming design-tradeoff questions?

New AlexandriaAs is common on many SE sites, I see opinion-oriented questions that are off-topic. This is an example of one, here, I think. Whereas I think questions like this ask for an answer that demonstrates a design trade-off solution. In this latter case, there are specific criteria that can be used t...

@user75798 I can post some tips, but there are already lots of good guides out there.

Q: How do you start mining Ether and use Ethereum on Windows?

user75798Which programs should be installed and what do you need to do to start mining Ether and use Ethereum?

@Tjaden Hess : Are you familiar with many of those "How To" Ethereum guides? For total newcomers, it is difficult to know which of the many is the best one to follow. Would it be possible for you or somebody else familiar, to collate the best sections from the different guides here?

Yes, I'm working on it now

The votes it would receive would be indicative of its quality and would help users have confidence they were following good, tried and true directions. I can have a look at it, if it is thorough.

Okay, I replied to the GNU post with some of my thoughts and favorite guides, but suggestions are welcome.

Q: Are questions about Ethereum's core development team on-topic?

Richard HorrocksI've been reading about Mike Hearn's departure from Bitcoin XT. The supposed in-fighting between Bitcoin's core developers reads a bit like a soap opera. It would be a shame if something similar were to happen with Ethereum, and there's no reason to expect it should. However, parallels between t...
