The lambda in computeIfAbsent is only evaluated when necessary which is a nice trick

@BobCross I feel like Java embraced functional programming rather belatedly. Many of these things are just taken for granted in other languages

The most aggressive I’m generally willing to go is “cleaner wax.” A smidge of polish mixed into a lot of wax can make things look much nicer.

@Zaid technically, it has always been possible to do “functional programming.” These days, the syntax has caught up with the desire for convenience. Java has never tried to be a cutting edge language. I kind appreciate that in the primary language that I use to pay my bills (and teach my interns!)

I totally agree that Java syntax has played catch-up and, now that streams and lambdas are in the language, I’d never go back
