Holy cats - I just disagreed with MS Windows recommended settings for my new 4K monitor. Now I'm peering at leeeeeetle tiny letters! I'm going to need to take my contacts out just to see what I'm typing!

@BobCross - What size is your 4k (overall size)?

2:18 PM
It’s a small bezel 27 inch 4K from Dell. It’s really neat. I’m thinking of spending some serious cash to upgrade the graphics card to get even more wonderfulness

2:39 PM
@BobCross - I bet it's nice. I'm not delving into the 4k realm yet ... though I'm thinking of upgrading my GPU at some point. The low end RTX cards look enticing for the price point. I don't think I could step up to a 2080 at this point, but a 2060 or possibly a 2070 might be a good move.
Even the GTX 1660 is a step above the 6GB 1060 I'm running right now (though this card does run pretty good).

2:56 PM
If you look at the old legacy GPU hierarchy on Tom's Hardware, they always recommended going up at least three levels if you buy a new card:
Their argument was that anything in the same band is going to feel pretty much the same. Using that rule, I should go to at least the 1080/2070 level (I have a 970 now)
From looking at benchmarks, I don't get the feeling that you'd be impressed going from a 1060 to a 1660. The 1660 seems to be roughly equivalent to the 1070 (which follows the rule of Nvidia). It might feel like a slight increase for several hundred dollars....
I'm also biased towards the 20-series cards since real-time raytracing is how I got out of graduate school in the previous century.

@BobCross - Yah, it will be a while before I can upgrade my video card. I think I'll be upgrading my proc/mobo/RAM before I'll be upgrading my GPU. I'm running on a 4th gen i7 ... I want to upgrade it to a i9-9900k ... go big or go home. I think I can expect a performance boost if I got that route ...
The 1060 I have is definitely better than "adequate", so ...
This new gaming monitor I bought has definitely improved game play.
The 1060 is running three different monitors right now, without issue. I haven't checked my FPS while in game, though. Guess that's what I should be looking at.
I really need to finish this engine before I can do anything, though.

Smart money for gaming always says go graphics card first
Only upgrade the processor when you know that it's the bottleneck.
SSD + more RAM generally come before processor as well
I'm wanting to build a new computer just because I haven't made one for a while. This machine is an i5 that I made in something like 2012. Still a trooper

3:47 PM
You can collect detailed performance logs to figure out where the bottlenecks are. I wouldn't upgrade the processor until I had logs showing that I was pegging the CPU for significant periods (which is why I still have an i5-3570 here ;-)

3:58 PM
@BobCross - Oh, it's a bottleneck ... for productivity. I want to upgrade it for other reasons ... the gaming aspect is just a bonus.
@BobCross - I have an SSD which works well. As far as RAM, I have enough for the processor and what I do (16GB), but if I get a new proc, it entails a new MoBo and new RAM at that time ... I'm not going to supplement what I have now to re-purchase RAM later.
Also, there is the "oooo-ahhhhh" factor with the i9-9900k ... gotta keep up with the Jones', you know.

I guess. I’m not writing a lot of code at home so my general purpose needs are well-bounded

@BobCross - Really, you should read my above comments to say: Paul wants to build a new play toy ... because.

6:17 PM
Evening all! I'm delighted - I have the guys from Car Hacking Village coming to do workshops at my conference in April!
Lots of canbus/obd/stuff

@RoryAlsop - I read that at first as cannabis ... LOL!
@RoryAlsop - Do these guys also work the computer cracking aspect of it as well (i.e.: tuning ECMs)?

Mostly the breaking into it side, but also modding/tuning

kewlio
That sounds like you are going to have fun!
