I just want to add another data point to the quest of figuring out the Onion Knight hat. I just got Onion Knight from this question about two hours ago. It was already well over the apparent vote requirements for the hat, and had been on the HNQ list for most of the previous day, but at around 2-3 hours ago was the first time that the highest-voted answer hit the same score as my question.

So, Onion Knight probably has a condition that the question earning it has an answer with a score greater than or equal to its own.

Throwing my hat in the ring for trying to predict the full conditions: Onion Knight is perhaps awarded to questions with score 5+, that make the HNQ list, with an answer that has a score greater than or equal to that of the question.

Or: Onion Knight is perhaps awarded to questions with score 5+, with an answer that has a score greater than or equal to that of the question, which receive more votes since making it onto the HNQ list than they had before they hit the HNQ list.

Just a couple of possible theories.

Q: Hats Load on Pages, but don't always go away

I had an interesting problem with hats loading oddly this afternoon: When I changed the hats on a separate tab, the hats loaded in, but never left, which was awkward for all of us. I was running Safari 9.0.2 (11601.3.9) on Mac OS X El Capitan with no add ons when the bug occurred.

To clarify: To get the "Speedy Delivery" hat you need to "answer within 30 minutes of the question being asked, scoring 3 and getting accepted" You only have to answer within the 30 mins, the accept and UVs can come after the 30 mins.

To be very explicit, the question has to qualify for the Tumbleweed badge at the time the answer is posted. There is one exception however, which is that the number of views is disregarded. Because we don't track historical view count data, it's not possible to say whether a question had 60 views...

There was an issue in the Winter Bash code that could cause old hats to not be removed when they're being replaced with new ones if the page contains elements that look like they may contain avatars but actually don't. This is fixed now.

Considering the amount of complaints we get about people doing bad stuff on the sites just to get hats, when we try to make the hats encourage positive behavior, I'd hate to see what happens with a heckling-themed hat.
