@IvoFlipse that would be cool, post it on the blog!

user11126
sancho commented on my blog post: fitness.blogoverflow.com/2012/03/…

@freiheit my sister just tweeted about how bad DC cyclists are

12:04 PM
FU rails FU!

user11126
12:15 PM
hahaha what's the problem?

Factory Girl doesn't want to install
Invalid gemspec in [/usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/specifications/factory_girl_rails-1.6.0.gemspec]: Illformed requirement ["#<Syck::DefaultKey:0xb244310> 3.0.7"]
Which I kind of need to get my test coverage up

user11126
install an older version of factory_girl?

user11126
using rails 3?

think so
version 1.6 also gives errors

user11126
it looks like you are, there's factory_girl and then there's factory_girl_rails

12:24 PM
Hmm factory_girl doesn't give problems :S

user11126
strange, if you're on rails 3 then you should be using factory_girl_rails

12:51 PM
@MattChan I'm trying to install 1.2, but I can't get it working :S

1:02 PM
I tried removing them, but I don't think I have 'permission' to delete them from the GUI

1:42 PM
hi @ThomasMcDonald, I officially hate Ruby (sometimes)

user30
hey bro

Are you calling me a brogrammer? ;P

user30
get with the brogram

user11126
1:57 PM
a rockstar developer

user30
transmit <3

2:13 PM
20.87/30 for my latest quiz
not bad, given how clueless I was at certain questions

user30
2:33 PM
I've pretty much given up with the online courses, haha

user30
Not enough hours in the week

user30
I plan on watching the rest of the NLP videos cause they're pretty interesting

@ThomasMcDonald yeah, I'm not sure if I'll be able to do their exercises every week
though saas-class is ending soon I believe
Ruby is killing me though :P

user11126
@IvoFlipse did you check out the perl code i sent you?

@MattChan haven't had the change yet
Omg...
the regular version is easy to follow, but god... that short one

user11126
2:40 PM
hahaha

user11126
a friend of mine pointed me to a technique he used when he did his the previous year

user11126
we didn't know it at the time but it's similar to run-length encoding

user11126
large sequences of characters were "compressed" by substituting it for a single character or a smaller string

user11126
"asdf asdf asdf asdf asdf asdf asdf asdf" will all get replaced by "g"

user11126
the program basically works on using regexes to do that stuff and then it gets evaluated

2:49 PM
I bet such stuff will get covered in the compiler design class too

user11126
@IvoFlipse have you ever programmed in assembly?

hell no, though I did read a bit about it in CODE the hidden language
and I saw youtube video's that showed crazy animations written in assembly

user11126
there was a book i used in a 2-credit class, it was called for C for C++ programmers

user11126
that book was written by one of our (retired) professors

2:52 PM
any good?

user11126
what was good about it was how it discussed pointers

user11126
and also the generated assembly code with different examples

user11126
it's not a baisc programming book (assumes you already know for loops, conditionals, etc.) but it's more of a supplement

Hehe, well the stack of books I still have to read is rather thick :P
if I want to read about c++, I think I'll first read the C++ Programming Language

user11126
it's good stuff to know

user11126
2:55 PM
and then afterwards, you just realize that people way smarter than you have already written very good compilers that optimize your code

@MattChan hehe, I already realize that :P
@MattChan P(A) != P(B) <-- Any idea if that isn't mean they are not equal or not the same (as in the same object)
or @freiheit :P

user11126
uh, wait, is that probability?

Btw my answer here is severely underrated

Q: Formula to count calories burned during swimming

SklivvzThe swimming calculator site tells you how many calories are burned during swimming based on a formula by the University of Wisconsin. Our swim calorie burned calculation is an estimate using on distance, pace, time, weight and stroke. The calorie formula is based on a study by University of ...

@MattChan yeah, its that dashed out = sign
Its asking whether A and B are independent random variables
surely they can have the same probability at some point, but that doesn't mean they are referring to the probability of the same thing

user11126
right

user11126
it's like..... planetary alignment?

user11126
3:07 PM
i don't have a good analogy

user11126
also super bad at stats and probability

hehe, so am I, which is why I'm working on it :P
well first time for a hair cut, it'll have to wait :P

user11126
3:42 PM

4:00 PM
@IvoFlipse what? P(A) != P(B) requires some context. :)
@IvoFlipse I upvoted, but am highly tempted to convert the one formula to two separate gender formulas and use fixed-width to make it easier to compare them. :)

user30
4:23 PM
@IvoFlipse ooh what compiler design class?

user30
oh, on Udacity. damn.

4:48 PM
@freiheit Go ahead, I thought about that as well, given its a bit silly like this

4:59 PM
@IvoFlipse ok, fine, I did. hopefully I got that right. :)

looks good to me @freiheit

The sorta weirdly arbitrary precision really jumps out at me. Especially having the, uh, "gender constant" having 6 digits of precision and everything else only having 3

@freiheit That might be a nice comment to add

user30
interesting read

5:22 PM
@ThomasMcDonald It is indeed interesting, though I don't program enough Ruby for it to be really useful (yet)

5:43 PM
@IvoFlipse so, should I post questions asking how my Garmin bicycle computer and Strava calculate Calories burned?

@freiheit Only if you have a formula :P
And I hope it was clear from my answer that I don't think calculations are particularly useful
though those computers track them, so you can compare the values over time, which is useful
@freiheit Garmin does make nice maps though

does it measure the power you used? like measuring the force on the cranks?
because that's what is requires for the rolling resistance
the wind speeds and your frontal surface
the gravity fluctuations (ok, those won't matter), but riding up a hill will
Actually if they simplify it to estimate your speed + acceleration and know the altitude differences, I think they might do an ok job, simply assuming all else is equal

6:07 PM
@IvoFlipse No, I do not have a garmin with any kind of power meter. Rolling resistance of bicycle tires on pavement is reasonably well-known and low enough to not be a huge factor.
air resistance is the big factor that they'd have no way to know unless I had a power meter of some kind

@freiheit especially the latter, because the width of your wheel, your body weight + the weight of your bike certainly will matter
however, the speeds at which you cycle, the quadratic component of the air resistance and the required energy to move your mass vastly outweigh it

@IvoFlipse you do tell strava your weight and the bike's weight. Sure, there's a couple percentage point variance from day to day...

@freiheit Well that already narrows it down, so I agree you can neglect the other details
Damn I have to calculate: P(Accident = 1 | Traffic = 1) and P(Accident = 1 | Traffic = 1, President = 1).

Also, power meters are really expensive. :) A HR monitor would be cool, but more for trying to hit target HRs, which is probably mostly only useful after a stress test at the cardiologist's office.

7:03 PM
sweet got my pax east badge!

ah you going there?

user11126
yup

user11126
just saturday though

user11126
i have some friends coming in from out of town too

user11126

user11126
7:05 PM
anime boston also coincidentally is the same weekend, but i'm not going to that

10:27 PM
Darn the book isn't out yet :(

11:00 PM
@IvoFlipse Release date of April 2012? I'll bet it's possible to get a review copy of some sort if you wanted to do a review for the blog...
(either electronic or the sort of thing that looks like it came out of a regular laser printer)
