Ok, so I got a similar analogy. Say you don't know the solution for the Schrodinger´s equation for a given problem. So, we use a trial variation function (normalized) in order to have an approximation of the ground state energy. We solve the variational integral for a lot of trial functions, that satisfy the boundary conditions, and just choose the lowest value.
