Well, one definition I have seen/eard for alkali, is a base that is soluble in water and dissosicates to form hydroxide ions. So, all alkali are hydroxides.. Not all hydroxides are alkali. And some substances like sodium carbonate, aren't alkaline themselves, but are alkaline forming because they form an alkaline sodium hydroxide. Why would that definition of alkali have been retired?

Q: How come nuclear waste is so radioactive when Uranium is relatively stable with a extremely long half life?

Shrimp33Natural uranium has a half life of 4.5 billion years. Representing with the expression $m(0.5)^{\frac{x}{(4.5\times10^9 \times 364)}}$, where $x$ is in days and $m$ is the initial mass of uranium. In one day, only $4.2 \times 10^{-11} \%$ decays into thorium. It would take around $2.4 \times 10^{...
