Q: Detecting a gas molecule moving through a small pinhole

heatherSuppose I have the four DNA base chemicals - thymine, adenine, cytosine, and guanine. Imagine I turn each of them into a gas, make a "cartridge" of the gas for each chemical, and then have a "pinhole" that is opened or closed by a semiconductor. When the pinhole is open, the gas will, of course, ...

Sorry, @Buttonwood, I had to leave suddenly, but I'll have to check out those videos. And... Carnegie Mellon is on the list of potential grad schools. That and Pitt.

I noticed we didn't have a neutrons tag, so I added it. Please don't murder me!
:
:P
So now we may call you a neutron source.

Q: Strength of pi bonds and sigma bonds?

Pranav I know that sigma bonds are stronger than pi bonds. What I am confused over is the strengths of the pi and sigma bonds formed between different orbitals. In class, our sir told us that $p\pi - p\pi$ bonds are weaker than $p\pi-d\pi$ bonds. The reasoning he gave behind this was that since the d o...

why has this been put on hold
I have shortened it now, how to go about reopening it?
Also, an answer would be appreciated...

@Melanie One advantage (or simply: property) of a written notice is that it is still present after time. Good luck for getting closer to the more and more green steel city

Q: What do we have r.a.m. and r.m.m.?

MrAPRead orthocresol's answer here first: What is the difference between "molecular mass", "average atomic mass" and "molar mass"? Orthocresol in his answer says that atomic mass is the weighed average mass of the atoms of an element and molecular mass is the mass of a molecule of an element/ compo...

@MelanieShebel You may live, neutron tag is getting a sentence though ;)
It only has a half life of about 10 minutes anyway. ;-)
That reminds me that I have to find a place for three or four real neutron sources soon. :-|

@skullpetrol You there?

@orthocresol we hnq now

@hBy2Py totally unrelated to anything, did you do anything specific to learn restructuredtext/sphinx?

A: Law of Multiple Proportions: What is the significance of small whole numbers?

alphonseWhen teaching beginners, usually non-stoichiometric chemical compounds are ignored. The reality is more complex that what they teach undergraduates and high school students. One important point about chemistry is that it is the study of atoms (mostly of the "naturally occurring" 92 elements) and ...

@MelanieShebel Yep, now we have two Wall of Texters™
At least this guy isn't creating new accounts willy-nilly, I guess.
@pentavalentcarbon Nope. The docs, SO, and a lot of (often terrifically frustrating) trial-and-error
It's got all the formatting sensitivity of Python, and then some, with about a tenth or less of the intuitiveness.
@Hippalectryon It's usually really hard. They would get in a lot of trouble if they sold something to an unqualified individual, so they just don't.
You probably would have to call them and set up an account, at minimum.
You might also have to supply them with paperwork documenting that you're doing research or whatnot, and what kind of research it is.

@hBy2Py So, where can I buy chemicals ? I wanna make glowsticks :(
Try calling customer service at the various vendors. If you can convince them you're only going to buy innocuous stuff, they may sell to you.
But it's almost certainly not going to be a thing where you sign up for an account on a website, place an order, and it shows up in a week.
Or, if you know someone who works with chemicals, you can ask them to buy for you, and you pay them back.
If there was only one website it would be fine, but due to price optimization I had three sites from which I planned to buy
The price of toluene on tcichemicals.org is just a ripoff >.>
In the States, I think you can get industrial grade toluene at some hardware stores
It's probably reagent grade; far higher purity than you need

I'm in France though D:
@hBy2Py Yeah it's much cheaper on alfa
<nod>, I figured that wouldn't help you very much. :-/
