Q: MathJax in the App

TyberiusHas anyone else noticed issues with MathJax in the StackExchange app? I'm aware the comments and titles don't render MathJax automatically, but I've also seen questions where certain math expressions lead to error messages in questions. The most recent and frequent example I see not rendering is ...

@gannex yes, I will find a sexy chart for you to look at, gimme a sec
thank Frank Jensen for those last two
@Zhe Advisor wants me to look for a job while I write my dissertation (as we discussed). I just want to sit on my couch at home for a few months...

Q: PLEASE HELP! Mole reaction HELP!

Georgia SamuelsGiven the reaction: 6 HCI + 2KMNO4 + 5 C2H204 ---> 2MnCI2 + 2KCI + 8 H20 + 10 CO2 + 65.46 KJ How much energy would be produced form the reaction of 10.0 moles of KMNO4 (in an excess of HCI and C2H204)?

Title of the day.
I wonder whether this is copied from some OCR'd document.

I bet Georgia Samuels' name isn't actually Georgia Samuels.

thx penta
I actually have that book... maybe I should get to reading it

Jensen is lit, highly recommended

Jensen is "lit"?
I'm not sure that's how I'd describe it XD

grad school warps your mind

last Saturday night I was sitting there at 4 in the morning and I was just like
wait, wtf am I doing with my life?
then I realized how important it was to know the exact activation energy of something
for a moment there I was pretty freaked out tho

I am never up at 4 AM and haven't been since 2007 for any reason other than needing to get to the airport early

2:03 AM
nice. sleep hygiene is good
I wonder if it would be worth buying a physical copy of Jensen
I want to own like 5-10 physical textbooks, but only the ones where I really think I have a decent chance of actually reading the whole thing
I just bought this neat pocket-sized book: oupcanada.com/catalog/9780195069181.html

hmm, never even heard of that one
but I like my physical copy aside from the coffee I spilled all over it
devil's advocate: I haven't read most of the books I own

it's a nice pocket-sized introduction to MO theory
kinda introductory, but I'd be lying if I said I understand everything in that book

@gannex do you know when DHMO will come?

Q: Do we really need [homework]? [Part 2]

orthocresolWhile we're on the topic of getting rid of tags, I would like to bring this up as a first step towards making a new closure policy. This has actually been discussed before. See: Should we have a homework tag? Apparently, at the time, it was thought to be helpful, despite an SE employee explicitl...

who designated me the DHMO diviner??

@gannex what?
No jokes. When will DHMO come? Any one know?

Hey loong you here?
A question dude ,if I have %of activated molecules at a particular temp then how can I find Ea

9:00 AM
@hBy2Py You mean the one with the rendering error, not rendering at all? $\left(\ce{H3C-C#CH\right)}$I'd say the error is justified, because \left( and \right) need to be on the same level to termerine what is between them.
The last update made \ce a block, to allow $V_\ce{H2O}$. So sorry for breaking your post, but I think it is better this way.

9:17 AM
@1,3-feeds My stance on this is now 'whatever'

Happy Nowruz everyone

I think the homework tag should stay, but every question tagged as homework should be insta-deleted.

@Fl.pf. Huh, why?
There are a lot of useful homework-tagged questions.

really? all homework questions I see are copy-pastes without any own contribution. A 'useful' homework question in my opinion would be one where you can't see that its homework and therefore doesnt need the homework tag

@Fl.pf. You can go to the homework tag's tab, and sort by votes, to see better questions.

I know, what I wrote was an exaggeration to make a point...

It's hard to tell whether something is literal or not when I haven't been interacting with you a lot.
For instance, this @Ortho guy is never serious. He's a pack of jokes.

ye I'm sorry, text is sometimes not the best method for using indirect methods of communication like humor, sarcasm etc
also, i hate smileys

Me too.
Smileys are kinda redundant most of the time

@mhchem Take a look at the actual Markdown of the post -- the syntax is correct in what I actually composed. Somehow that final } got transposed between when I wrote it and when MathJax tried to render it.
Ahh -- never mind!
I must've been looking at the wrong snip of MathJax.
I did make a typo.
<headdesk>
Yes, I completely agree, it is better this way.
Now I just need to get a better set of eyes.......
@pentavalentcarbon Hm... does the term 'freelance computational chemist' also carry the same implication? Because, uh... I'm .... sorta... yah.
@skullpetrol Unicode character failed to render. Your active browser font doesn't support it.

Thanks @hBy2Py
Btw what does pi have to do with the dragon on your avatar?

isnt that a python?

12:05 PM
@Fl.pf. Yep
@skullpetrol It's meant to evoke the mascot of Python, the programming language
I would've just used the actual mascot, but I didn't want to imply that I was somehow officially affiliated with the language.
So, 'h by 2 pi' should be pretty clear

Interesting.

the 'py' instead comes from the fact that I'm programming stuff on the side related to quantum chem, in Python.

Q: Why was the heroin question put on hold as being a personal medical question?

Martin - マーチンThe question asks for hire to destroy heroin. It doesn't ask for ways to nullify the effects after consumption, or even mentioned human (or any other) biological behaviour in the slightest. I don't see how this question would fit this custom close reason. (What to add to heroin to make it harmles...

@pentavalentcarbon You can probably ask the employer for a slightly delayed start.

12:45 PM
@hBy2Py Why did you use \left(? The result looks the same with (.

1:42 PM
@hBy2Py in reality it is wrong to assume that "freelance scientist" means you're a crackpot, since freelancers are a thing in so many fields, and I am not qualified to comment on it

@mhchem Habit, possibly a bad one.
But LaTeX focuses on the markup having semantic meaning, so I like to use the \left/\right pairs as frequently as possible, since it (1) ensures I balance my closures and (2) amplifies the semantic content of the groupings.

better a \left( too much than too few and you get an ugly equation

@pentavalentcarbon (That was a joke, more than a criticism, btw...)

I guess I knew that but worth mentioning because I have conflicting opinions about it

@M.A.R. Yeah. I feel like everybody is tired of discussing it already.

@Fl.pf. A LaTeXer being worried about ugly equation?

@M.A.R. are.... are you saying latex equations are ugly by definition???

LaTeX code is usually
Compared to other code

are you talking about the compiled code or the source code?

Source code. Nice movie BTW.

yeah latex source code is horrible..

Q: Calculating the electrode potential from thermochemical data

JM97How can I calculate the electrode potential from thermochemical data? My attempt: I know that the electrode potential is dependent on the enthalpies of: atomisation, first ionisation, second ionisation and hydration. So I summed up all to get $\Delta G$ and used the formula $\Delta G=-nFE$,but I...
