@fredsbend May have been overboard there, but thought that the earlier version read too much as inviting to answer: 'was it this group' 'that did it'.

I don't think so. You're participating, in good faith trying to make questions and answers better.
I see from the current answer it's an old timey conspiracy theory. There's some facts: 1) John Brown was militant and an abolitionist. 2) He was funded by wealthy New Englanders. There there's the stuff that I'm pretty sure the claim stretches and even flat out made up. The stuff like "savior", communist, and anti-Christian.
I'd like a little more development in an answer on those elements, but the current answer is okay, I think. It's appropriately factual, but not thorough.
I've been tossing around in my head a rubric of sorts for "good answers". I have it nailed down to accuracy, thoroughness, and corroboration. Most surviving answers are accurate. The facts they give are correct. All of them corroborate those facts with reliable sources. The trouble I think is there's not enough thoroughness, and when there is, it's deleted out because it's not corroborated with reliable sources.
I know you highly value thorough answers, so your thoughts here would be appreciated.
