I return!

You left?

7:11 AM
:(

7:38 AM
morning working people

morning

@avazula Good morning, two days to go now on the election. I remember how nervous I was, waiting for those days to pass.

are there several positions available?

Just the one on IPS.

oh, that add some suspense

7:48 AM
@Snow yeah, it's stressful. I have no idea what the outcome will be

Fingers crossed for you.

8:02 AM
thank you :)
we have some strong candidates

All voting

@avazula Don't forget to cast your own votes. It's expected that you should vote for yourself.

8:20 AM
@Snow I already cast two votes, but thanks for the reminder :)

8:46 AM
morning all

8:57 AM
Morning. I managed to work out how to watch F1 races without paying through the nose for Sky.
Not that I really wanted to pay for yesterday's race. Or even have it for free.

yeah it wasn't a classic by any means

Norris did well, but that was the only highlight.

yeah.. I thought that was a very mature drive given the need to nurse an ailing car for nearly half the race
deserved more point then he got IMO
another high quality drive from Hamilton - but it's sort of insane that we now expect nothing else from him

9:16 AM
Yeah. Although I now just ignore most of his radio messages because he's just messing with Vettel.
I just wish that Bottas would win a few more and make it more of a championship battle. Right now, the championship is as much of a parade as the races themselves.

@Snow agreed.. the "new" Bottas we saw in the early races appears to have been replaced by the 2018-spec - who lacks any sufficient pace on a Sunday to challenge Hamilton.
I think come the second half of the season Ferrari will rue hobbling Leclerc quite so much a the start
For all his raw pace Vettel has always been fragile under sustained pressure and IMO he's looking burnt out, and has been since mid-2018

Yes, Ferrari seem intent on putting Leclerc on bad strategies.
And yes, Vettel doesn't work well under pressure - that's something he just hasn't managed to work on. He's better at talking about stuff after the race, but he can't cope with pressure when he's wearing his helmet.
And Hamilton knows that and uses it.

yep.. their strategy dept seems to have vacated the premises this year - I think the work experience kid is making all the choices - with the only direction given to be "favor Vettel"
@Snow agreed.. in a way that is faintly reminiscent of Schumacher and Senna before him Hamilton knows that if you can beat the other guy in his head you've done half the job already

Sky commentators were wanting to turn on the track-side sprinklers. Oddly, the stewards wouldn't tell them where the sprinkler controls were.

@Snow oh yeah I'd forgotten that Paul Ricard has those - that would have been fun!

9:27 AM
It's only on one configuration of the track, which covers a good proportion of the GP circuit. So yes, that would have been rather fun.
Luckily, Top Gear had my crying with laughter yesterday, so wasn't a wasted day.

@Snow I haven't seen any of the new Top Gears - does the latest iteration of the presenting line up work?
I've always rated Chris Harris as a car journo but his on-camera work in /DRIVE was the TV version of plain oatmeal

Yes, they have a lot more genuine chemistry than anything since Clarkson&Co. They seem to genuinely enjoy working with each other. And they have fun together, which is clear to see.

@Snow that's encouraging

I didn't think it would work when I saw the line up announced, but it does.

2 hours later…
11:16 AM
ST and the Clio are both going next month

@Twyxz replacements?

Replacement.
M3.

@Twyxz Noice.. which year?

18 plate
Idk what the edition is called but it comes with a specific body kit and metallic black colour that looks kinda matte and wrapped but it's actually factory colour

Are we chatting about the NFL? ;-}

11:22 AM
@Twyxz guessing that's probably the "Competition Pack" - takes it up to 444BHP too. Manual or DCT?

DCT I believe @motosubatsu
My friend owns it but he's upgrading to a Libertywalk GTR
but i'm nabbing that M3 with all the work it's had done visually and on the exhaust :P

@Twyxz lol.. somewhat surprised you didn't notice before buying it :D Still, a nice result - the F80 M3 is a serious weapon, and a great all rounder
guessing insurance is going to be.. painful, especially with the mods!

Have a guess :)
I'll have 3 years no claims when I insure it as a 20 yr old
Not a teen anymore, birthday last week :D

£3.6k ?

almost
bit higher

11:28 AM
£3.8k ?

4.2k :(
but the sale of the clio covers that for the first year hahahaha

@Twyxz oof.. that's a gut punch, not bad given your age and the car though I suppose but ouch that much insures my fleet for two years

My Dad's excited but my Mam said I have to move out hahahah @motosubatsu
"You can't use that thing on a night time and come back onto our drive"

@Twyxz lol

It's a little bit noisy :P

11:35 AM
FWIW I'd do some homework on caring for the paintwork - the "Frozen" matte finishes as BMW call them need some particular looking after and need special products (and you'll want to keep a bottle of matte quick detailer in the car at all times - bird sh#t really f##ks that finish up in double quick time!)

Yeah I'm getting the products off him too

Win :)
importantly when do we get pics?

Apparently you can't use normal products and to keep it's paintwork in the colour and shade it's in it requires special stuff
Definitely :P

Congrats on the M3. Should be peachy.

I said to myself nothing over 30k but since he's getting rid I caved
Still not 100% on it yet, don't really want to waste that much outright because my friend isnt' going to give me a finance deal or anything. Could use the bank but pointless really
But it's soooooo nice

11:38 AM
Is that auto or manual gearbox?

dct
Guarantee I lose my license if I buy one of those... that's the issue
Irresponsible child

So almost as good as PDK then. Sweet.

how much is he asking for it (if you don't mind me asking?)
last I saw 2018 cars were still going for pretty silly money

It's closer to 6 figures than it is to 0
if that gives you an indication :(
But buying a standard M3 2018 could be closer to 0. But the competition package is so nice

Ouch. For that money, I'd be thinking of an I-Pace. But then I'm old.

11:44 AM
or even like a slightly older GTR

@Twyxz then you might be getting a touch ripped off there... competition pack cars are going for about £47k

competition pack cars -- what does that mean?

@MisterPositive Plastic bolt on things that look like carbon fiber.

Oh...
got cha

@MisterPositive BMW offered an uprated version of the M3 (and the M4 as well) with what was called the "Competition Pack" - basically is adds a tiny bit extra power, some uprated suspension components and front seats and.. some bolt on plastic things that look like carbon fibre

11:51 AM
I love my BMW
thus far in my driving nothing is close

also known as the "This should have been the standard version" edition :)

I've never understood that with cars

they clearly know it looks better because they charge more

@MisterPositive you've got a 428i IIRC? nice motors :)

11:53 AM
:)
yes the twin turbo is awesome

Surely you would want all your cars to look the best they can before release

@Twyxz Your forgetting the P word.
Profit

Well if you don't make any money on the original versions you're not making any profit though :)

Seriously though @Twyxz I'd take a look at the market and get some info on the exact spec of your mate's car - the only one's that are holding above 50k are the CS cars. If someone is asking more than that for a "normal" competition pack car it damn well better come with some free money

@motosubatsu LMAO

11:56 AM
I can see some on motors.co.uk and quite a few black ones are over 50k
they're just stock ones too
I need to find out exactly what he's had done
but now that I've mentioned GTR.... but I don't wanna pay 10k for insurance quite yet

@Twyxz they do though - the "normal" versions are for the people who can't quite afford the higher versions (or won't pay) but still want the same basic car

have any of you ever owned a Land Rover?

I believe Snow owned a Range Rover

Yes I've had three of them.

which is just a smaller better looking

11:57 AM
Well, Land Rover cars of different types, yeah.

I saw an SVR the other day in white and that was soooooooo tasty
the exhaust noise was like heaven for such a big car to move so fast too

SVRs are the ultimate battle wagons.
When the zombie apocalypse comes, I'm going to steal an SVR.

@Twyxz there's a handful on AT.. but they are all main dealer and are clearly ex-demos (they have naff all miles on them)

I can't imagine myself in a big car but seriously SVR's are pretty snazz
@motosubatsu Anything particularly wrong with demo's

@Twyxz F-pace SVR is also nice.

12:01 PM
@Twyxz swings and roundabouts.. they stand a good chance of having been ragged by test pilots but on the flip side they will usually get a through pampering before being sold. They do command a premium - but that's usually dealer tax more than anything else

My old E-class was an "ex manager" car. It turned out really well - it was faultless.
It even had the plastic film left on the trim panels.
I have a free evening tonight. Is Aquaman worth watching?

A lot of the times with cars that drink fuel the case is tjhat people don't do many miles anyway because they bought the car to be cool but realise they can't afford to run it
@Snow So so
better films to watch but it was definitely not disappointing

There's no other good films that have just been released on rental.

@Snow Aquaman is worth watching for free or on the cheap
How was the maintenance cast of the Land Rover?
cost not cast damn it

@Twyxz you'd be surprised - most people who buy new high end cars such as the M3 don't give a frig about fuel costs, low mileage usually indicates it's more of a weekend car or they commute by train or something. And of course you have me.. who does ~30k miles a year in his V8 :P

12:09 PM
Not so bad, it was pretty bomb-proof. Of course it depends on whether you're getting the service done at main dealers or independant.

If I were to sell my car privately
how thorough do you think the checks are gonna be on it

depends on the buyer, I guess.
someone who knows their beans will want to see evidence of known service items for the milage.

@Twyxz what snow said
selling yours privately will be a little more complicated as you'll have to clear the finance first

So say I have a VERY SLOW coolant leak from somewhere (probably the pumps). How possible is it to be found
@motosubatsu On about the Clio :P

@Twyxz ah so on the Clio..

12:12 PM
@Twyxz Not likely. but don't park it over the stain on the drive when the buyer comes to look at it.

There's no leaks that leave marks on the ground as far as I'm aware

For private car buying, I'd certainly be looking at the state of the driveway.

The only remains of coolant leak are in a little compartment where the pipes overlap with something else
but it dries up every night
looks like rain if anything

but if that leak is caused by something known, then a buyer might want to know that the known remedial work has been done.

if you've got a very slow leak it may go unnoticed - You don't have to declare things like that (unless they specifically ask you about any problems it's caveat emptor) just be careful not to advertise it as "fault free" or anything that could be construed as misrepresentation of the car's condition
@Snow does it being French count as it being "something known" ? :P

12:15 PM
True, being a French car, I'd be worried if was sold as "fault free".

@Snow the seller might as well wear a t-shirt that says "I'm a lying liar that lies"
or indeed have their pants on fire

Well with it being a starter car I'm just hoping a young teen comes and has no idea, sees the exterior, sees the interior and says oooo nice i'll take it
which my girlfriend did with her car

It's going to be good to welcome Twyxz to the right side of the Maginot Line.

@Snow yep, although someone's going to have to volunteer to teach him the basics of how to drive a german car, unless he's got adaptive cruise on that thing they don't just do the tailgating by themselves.

Q: Basic difference between Wikipedia and Stack-Exchange?

user30612Every successful website is loved globally due to its unique beauty. What is the difference between Wikipedia and Stack Exchange, when both are knowledge base system !! Of course, we like Stack Exachage because of its active interactive answering features and protective commenting individuality. ...

^ what the actual f##k?

I'm already a professional black bmw driver

12:26 PM
@Twyxz oh right it's black.. have you got the requisite amount of coke on order or is he including a few K's to get you started? (that would explain the inflated price I guess)

Comes with a dispenser so i never have to leave the car
"put your money in the compartment and your product will be dispensed"

just remember not to get high from your own supply

Completely separate compartment, why do you think the body kit is there
Widebody directly translates to drug compartments

12:42 PM
One of our directors isn't shy about his bonus - there's a lime green GT3 RS parked in director's row in the car park.

12:55 PM
@Snow WOW
that is a very nice automobile
I am hoping for this

Not as up on US prices as UK but that feels reasonable value
the GLC comes with a pretty decent kit level as standard - and with it being 2WD it should give decent-ish economy and poke

Yeah, GLCs are pretty nice. Dog friendly too.
I wouldn't mind one of these for my next car.
Or one of these

1:10 PM
both very tasty.. if it were me the Jaaaaagggg would edge it though

Yes. But the Volvo is a bit of a 400bhp sleeper.

@Snow it does have that going for it - walk softly but carry a big stick indeed

But, in two years time, any affordable ones will have screwed batteries.

@Snow that's the problem I see with hybrids and electric for people like myself - I've always "punched above my weight" as it were by buying cars a few years older, you can buy something that's got a traditional ICE at 7-8 years old and if it's been looked after it's still a damn good car but with the way batteries degrade they are basically garbage by a few years old

1:27 PM
Who owns Volvo now anyways?

@MisterPositive Geely
Ford sold them in 2010-ish

They're damned nice cars these days.

@Snow agreed!

Bit of a shame that a XC60 is a bit too small and an XC90 is far too large for me.
Which leaves me with this

@Snow it's a shame they stopped doing the XC70 really

1:40 PM
Yeah. I'm kind of stuck about what to go for when the PCP expires on the Macan in two years time.

@Snow the F-Pace continues to impress me.. it sounds odd to say it about a car that's in that sort of price bracket but it offers so much bang-for-buck

Yeah, and the later RRS is pretty nice as well.

Q: Was it really unprofessional of me to leave without asking for a raise first?

TheOnsenI've just given notice to my current job for a new position which offered near triple my current salary ($37k as a software engineer). I knew that I was underpaid when I took the job but as a previous felon I couldn't be too picky about that. My manager really pressed me for why I was leaving in ...

@IDrinkandIKnowThings oh that one.. I saw it earlier and decided to ignore it
the boss sounds a bit crappy but as is SOP for TWP any opportunity to pile on a boss/manager/employer results in, well, a pile on.

Q: Should I report a leak of confidential HR information?

marontoI found that an employee who is no longer with us uploaded a giant Excel file containing HR information into Slack. The file is available to anyone in our Slack and contains names of all current and former employees, their contact details, full names, who has stock options, annual leave entitleme...

same problem 11 answers 0 references

2:32 PM
while I don't disagree with you on that particular question - certainly if we are discussing any regulatory obligations (such as whether you need to report breaches etc) I'd expect references/citations (even if just some examples from likely jurisdictions) but the problem with that one isn't the lack of references - the problem is more that most of the answers are just weak re-phrasings of others

There used to be a culture of include references in answers. It seems no one even tries any more

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I think there's some question types that it's useful for - others not so much. I (almost) always include them if it's referring back to something that is defined (e.g. regulations) but if it's something that's answered more from experience then there isn't anything to reference. The "report HR leak" question is a great example of one where references would be appropriate, the "unprofessional to leave without asking for a raise" isn't IMO

I am not calling anyone out for it. Just too bad none of those answers have links. That is the problem.
ohh well.

I didn't think you were calling me out or anything.. I was just saying that for some types of question references aren't required (IMO)

@motosubatsu Well if general opinions are acceptable with out any reference then there is no reason to restrict Career Advice questions. The main reason we called them off topic was because all the answers were pure opinion.

2:52 PM
@IDrinkandIKnowThings well there's a difference between "pure opinion" and answers from experience - career advice is a thorny issue I know, personally I wouldn't have any problem with them being asked on here (assuming they were appropriately tagged etc), again I think there's a case to be made that experience can lead to useful answers applicable to both the asker and subsequent visitors. I'm probably in the minority on that one though
I'd be resistant to any push to require all answers to be referenced though, we are aren't a hard science SE (such as Medical Sciences)

3:07 PM
I am not saying all answers should be referenced but it should be the norm rather than the exception

Q: Why did my comment get deleted / can I tell who did it?

BlehI had added a comment to the qusteion asked here Was it really unprofessional of me to leave without asking for a raise first? It wasn't a thank you/you're welcome style comment, and I actually have someone saying the point I made was valid. However, it seems my comment was deleted without a rea...
