reading about you guys and how much you make... I actually make peanuts, no idea how I survive.... my workers make more than me.... plus I'm pretty much retired, and lazy anyway... had an audit chap come see me last week, told him i make nothing and live off the land... then he started asking awkward questions, so I untied the dogs and he made his way out pretty quick :-)

2:04 AM
@Kilisi First word problems. Middle America is better though.

2 hours later…
4:03 AM
@RichardU it's not a problem, first World you probably wouldn't get away with setting the dogs on the govt monkeys... so it evens out a bit

4 hours later…
7:52 AM
Friday at last. Now to see if my new laptop does anything to screw up the build for tomorrow's prod update.

Morning

8:18 AM
I'm guessing you'll break into the top 100 leaderboard places sometime next week.

9:15 AM
Me? @Snow

@Twyxz Yes, you.

Oh yeh, Pretty close hahaha @Snow No pressure now...

You'll get there before I get a top 10 place.

Never know, might just not answer as i often tend to do
As long as I hit 10k before June I'll be happy

9:46 AM
My friend got asked "Would you prefer to be best of the worst or worst of the best?"

@Twyxz depends what at

I'd prefer an Olympic bronze medal to a school swimming medal.

10:15 AM
That was it
if you asked depends what at then it would probably be easy to answer
but he didn't think that fast hahaha
I'm pretty sure worst of the best is always the option

10:54 AM
I'm becoming a monk.

@Twyxz which variety?

11:11 AM
@Snow it's the nonchalant way it says "it will fight but once it's inside out it will calm down!"

Yup.

11:27 AM
@motosubatsu debating bullet or Shaolin
@Snow that answer just made me burst into laughter ffs...
---edit--- Actually, the brain and eyes are not particularly appetising, so you might as well remove those as well...

And while we are at it, I assume you mean a common, mediterranean octopus with two sets of suckers on each tentacle; if you are referring to any other weird exotic things disregard my answer completely
Man this cooking stack is brilliant

Hello folks

1 hour later…
12:44 PM
@Kilisi, in Colorado, back in the 1800s, they murdered the head of Indian affairs. Nobody mourned his passing. We still have places like that today.
@Snow I could never eat octopus. They are highly intelligent and likely well aware of their predicament.....

1:11 PM
@RichardU It's scientifically proven that if you eat intelligence you gain it.

1:22 PM
@Twyxz I'm already too clever by half

@RichardU go chown down on an anti-vaxxer, that should bring your intelligence down a bit

Someone ask something stupid with a simple answer so I can get votes ticking over the weekend
I keep coming to see but I got nothing hahahaha

1:37 PM
if you could answer why the previous person to work on this code did what he did I'd gladly bend space and time itself to give you the rep you desire

It was the only way he knew how
so when do I get my rep?

@motosubatsu Do you know why cannibals don't eat divorced women? Too bitter

@Twyxz space and time duly bent.. your rep has been sent now and will be delivered in 10^100 years
(that's UTC)

@motosubatsu That's nice
(hanks for the clarification)

@Twyxz yvw
Unfortunately if you aren't going to be in our couriers will be unable to leave your rep with a neighbor and will instead place it inside your wheelie bin for "safe" keeping

1:49 PM
Ah well, so basically redelivered back to you

I don't mind helping people overcome their own ignorance, but I draw the line at foolishness @Twyxz. and there is far too much of that in the questions

@RichardU but that's so unfair

What?

@motosubatsu Word's I'd love to see banned:

-Fair
-Unfair
-Toxic
-Proactive
-Problematic
-anything ending in "ist", "ic", "ism" or "obe"
@Twyxz What's on second

nice easy fresh meat for you @Twyxz :

Q: Can the same software job be simultaneously performed freelance and for a company?

DeDevI have a question about laws and practices in the software industry, specifically. I am wondering whether there are any restrictions regarding whether it is possible to do freelance work or have a "hobby business" doing practically the same thing as a company you are employed by full time? I assu...

go forth, spread obvious common sense and reap the rep

1:54 PM
@Twyxz go for it! Channel the spirit of St Dogbert!

It's too complicated

Do I go for the "You're stupid" or the "check with the company you work full time for"
Too much effort
From now on I answer 200+ questions only

chicken
I'm so disappointed I see no option but to go out in the snow and have a cig <shakes head sadly />

2:10 PM
@motosubatsu There's no way I'm letting you get inside me.

2:22 PM
ehm
What

@Snow well at least I know there's no point in spending all that money on dinner now

<Walks out of room slowly />

@Twyxz don't be jealous

I gave the common sense answer
and I got the 30 rep
Half way to a 5 day cap which is a full time job for me

2:49 PM
@Twyxz common sense is none too common

Fair point

straightforward common sense isn't really a desired outcome here on SE where people would rather 1) overcomplicate the question, 2) give an overcomplicated answer, 3) edge-case anyone else's answer to remove any shred of common sense, or 4) get offended by what you say (usually getting offended on someone else's behalf if they possibly can)

This recent question is pretty stupid

@Snow yeah, that last one is a pet peeve of mine. Getting offended on someone else's behalf is infantilizing someone.

Yes, I see it a lot. And the said people will often get more offended if you point out that the inferred offendee probably won't get too offended by the imagined offense in the first place.

3:07 PM
@Snow I grew up when the saying was "see the person, not the disability", we've come full circle..... SMH... ditto that with race.

@RichardU you can't say that.. it's offensive to people who don't have heads

If anyone fancies a new book, check out "Foundryside" - steampunk/fantasy based on hacking/scripting/cryptography. Pretty well written too.

3:59 PM
Good Morning people
@Snow interesting... somehow it reminded me of Android: Netrunner
Just played that game for the first time last weekend

Never heard of it I'm afraid. I saw reference to the book somewhere on my Flipboard feed, so I bookmarked it.

4:17 PM
TBH I haven't read a book for pleasure in.... about 6 months
just technical and AI books

I'd be kinda lost without my Kindle.

enjoy
Don't have a Kindle... is it better than actually paper books?
I guess the advantage is the flexibility

Sort of. I read so much that I wouldn't have anywhere to put the physical books when I'm done with them (I have so many already and given even more away to charity shops). I can store huge amounts of books on my device and on the cloud. Plus, it's small and light. And if I get bored of one book, I can easily swap to another.

@DarkCygnus I'm a Kindle convert - I love actual real paper books (mmm... new book smell!) but the Kindle is just so damn convenient and easy
add in that if I find myself at a loose end at any point during the day I can just fire up the Kindle app on my phone and pick up where I left off
that said the vast majority of my book consumption these days is via Audible

generally, I use the Kindle for fiction and paper for non-fiction.

4:40 PM
@DarkCygnus I never had a battery die on a paperback

@RichardU hehe
What about the Light?

@DarkCygnus my kindle has no light

Reading things on the phone or screen can be tiring to the eye because of backlight
I recall there are Kindles that don't have light, the first ones (my sister had one)

@RichardU true enough.. but it does have to be said that the battery life on the the e-ink kindles are phenomenal, and since there is no backlight eye strain is a non issue

@DarkCygnus I never have to worry about light reflecting off of a paperback into my eyes either

4:42 PM
mine is an original edition. Never want to replace it. Best kindle ever, for me.
And I have it signed by various authors who are no longer alive :-(

@motosubatsu yes, even though I don't use them, I think those were better

@RoryAlsop I've got one of these

Thats the cool one

decent screens back then
and infinite battery life (nearly)
I far prefer books. I love books. But kindles are sooo handy

speaking of authors who have passed, does anyone know where Harlon Elisson is buried? I want to bring some jelly beans to his grave site

4:45 PM
My main use cases for one are holidays, and having entire maintenance manuals for vehicles

@RoryAlsop it's a fricking god send on holidays, for a trip of more than a couple of days I used have a suitcase that was more than 50% books by weight

@motosubatsu that was my problem.Or else you'd have to read all the crap books in the hotel. And then...

I keep getting confused by you Brits using "holiday" for vacation

@RichardU I assumed they meant the same. We understand Americans when they speak about vacation (probably because of National Lampoon)

In Spanish they are different things
Holiday is a term used only when it is a celebration of some Saint or something
Like Easter

4:50 PM
@DarkCygnus which makes sense - Holy Day

or the Virgin, Patron of our City
everything else, Independence day, etc. are just vacations

@RoryAlsop The American usage for holidays is usually reserved for religious observances and a few nationally recognized days off

"Asueto" is the word in spanish, don't know the translation
lol, Google says it translates to "day off"

@DarkCygnus google is extremely bad in translating German and Japanese as well
Both languages have words that change meanings based on their context

@RichardU Just watch some Dubbed anime versus just subtitles
there one can see such issues

4:53 PM
@DarkCygnus oh yes. I have done that
I've also watched German movies with subtitles, and watched the botched translations....
Still, nothing trumps this one...

My hovercraft is full of eels
