Q: Why would a business employ someone if they knew she was pregnant?

KilisiI was reading this question and I've always wondered why a business would employ someone who is pregnant just to give them maternity leave for three months when they wouldn't even have completed their probation. What is the logic behind it? If I knew a lady is pregnant I'd cross her off the lis...

afternoon all

Good afternoon and morning.
I never knew that "nohello" was a thing before this morning. And thus I witness the casual death of common courtesy...

@Snow yup same here
I actually thought we'd gotten rid of all the "I want to be rude, how can I be rude without blowback" questions to IPS

Yep. I think the top rated answer there is perfect, but I don't find any harm in a few pleasantries before dumping my problems onto someone else.

@Snow agreed.. think we're on the same page there

How's that new contract going? Are you still smelling of hay?

11:53 AM
new contract going ok so far, fortunately I'm based out of the distribution centre so no aromas to worry about except when visiting the production facilities

excellent news. Hope it continues to go well for you. I guess it's quite nice working for a different industry for a change.

indeed.. it's actually all pretty interesting
I see it all kicked off here while I wasn't looking

Yes. Your absence can't be proven to be a contributing factor, not at all...

12:07 PM
me a steadying influence? who'd have thunk it?

You're the steadiest guy here. It's a wonder your name isn't Eddie.

hehe... thanks but in reality it's more that I'm like a swan. I may look all calm and serene on the surface but under the water I'm a whole boatload of frantic crazy

Above the water is all that counts.

@Snow tell that to the titanic

lol. That is very true.

@Kilisi One of the other answers from Joe is also very pertinent
Not hiring someone who is visibly pregnant after they got into the closer selection process exposes the company to liability. So if you do that, you need ironclad reasoning and documentation that shows other reasons were more important in factoring your decision.

Answers from Joe are invariably pertinent. That's why he's the leader of the stack.

Also in most of europe employers don't solely fund paid maternity leave

2:20 PM
@Magisch More importantly it must not look like that is the reason. IE documented problems that exist outside of the pregnancy.

2:36 PM
I think my comment on Joe's answer helped clear things up.

3:07 PM
@Magisch I'm pretty pragmatic, there is always a way to get rid of someone, lost count of the times I've been threatened with court action by crooks even in the first World.
it's almost standard business practice these days for many people.

Q: Apologizing for an accident that occurred outside the workplace

IHaveTheBestDogI have a colleague, let's call him Gary, who sits a few rows down from me and had an emotional support dog. A lot of people in the office question whether this is truly a real "emotional support dog" or just a scam pulled by Gary because the dog is like 80 years old (in dog years), is almost com...

@ElysianFields I don't see why they wouldn't hire him. It's not like he's going to have another chance to step on the dog.
^ read that comment and nearly choked on my drink :D

4:14 PM
@Kilisi You might pragmatically decide from a business standpoint that the cost and effort to deter court action might not be worth saving on a 3 month cover period. Especially if the applicant is otherwise well suited to the position

@ElysianFields I attempted to de-snarkify the question

@JoeStrazzere I think its way better.
and since I have a ton of respectable peoples attention, is saying sorry for your loss an admission of guilt? I don't think so, but I am not always right...

4:34 PM
@MisterPositive - I don't think it's an admission of guilt any more than paying for the damages to your own car is an admission of guilt. But then I'm not a lawyer. I would have apologized even if it wasn't my fault.

@JoeStrazzere me too

1 hour later…
5:51 PM
@MisterPositive Judge Judy would say that apologizing when something unfortunate happens is just being kind, not accepting fault

6:35 PM
@IDrinkandIKnowThings I would agree with that too
@Snow Your on awful late sir. Hodor.

I’m kinda off and on. Mostly off...

7:28 PM
Hmm, why do we actually even have tags? Does anyone use them?
Country tags are useful, but it's not like SO where you might want to follow a C# tag...

7:57 PM
@Lilienthal so we can have Tag Badges, obviously :o)
also so one can subscribe to certain tags? I am subscribed to some on other sites (not on TWP cause I'm highly engaged)
Anyone else thinks that the dog question may be trollish in nature?
It says it was an old dog
and also that such dog "darted in front of the car"
old dogs don't usually dart around or run, they are more calm
also, it says it darted in front of the car when he was returning home. That would have been possible if OP were close to Gary's house still, or getting out. And in those cases its more likely OP would have been driving slowly, as in getting out of a garage, or driving through a residential block
but, meh, we have to assume good intentions

9:37 PM
@DarkCygnus That was kind of my point, though I guess that there are some questions where not everyone can answer them. The country-specific ones are most of those I guess, but might be some others perhaps.
Though most of our questions just get the professionalism tag slapped on them of course.

@Lilienthal I don't know of the others, but personally I do use tags, and when including them, or editing them into posts, I do it with care and consideration. It helps me to search if there are possible dupes or relates posts to suggest OP, or to check the literature on similar posts so one can give a more thorough and complete answer.

9:53 PM
Sure I add them and clean them up on posts, but we've had a tag problem for ages and I'm wondering if it would make more sense to dramatically cut down on tags. On the other hand, searching is indeed a valid case and some people might follow tags even if most don't. So he.
Mainly just thinking out loud I guess.
