@Kaz what interests me is how many solid connections there are to TWP from everywhere else. most other sites have just a few big hitters and a bunch of tiny ones.
and then to prove the ubernerd creativity connection... the overpowering connection from unix to worldbuilding LOL

I'm amused that Infosec has got connections to everywhere except Seasoned Advice, Cross Validatd and Math Overflow. I now have a challenge to work out a cooking question with security implications...

6:59 AM
@gnat Well at that point I'm going to have to ask you to link to this study of yours. It would be one thing to say that the conversion percentage of HNQ visitors into long-term contributors is low, which is reasonable. It's something else altogether to claim that the HNQ is a useless "drain on society" with no redeemable features. That's demonstrably untrue since we already have two examples of regulars finding this site through HNQ and I'm gonna guess there are more.

@Lilienthal Pretty sure HNQ was how I came to join TWP actually... it's certainly the way I've "discovered" some of the other SE sites

Kaz
8:38 AM
@SoylentGray I suspect it's because "The Workplace" is one of those universally-relevant things in peoples' lives.

Kaz
8:52 AM
@motosubatsu I don't remember how I got here, but HNQ was probably involved.

@Kaz all you know is you woke up with 150 rep and a traffic cone on your head?

Kaz
@motosubatsu Something like that.
> Member for 2 years, 5 months
Wow, that's been a while.
Though apparently, it took me 9 months to write my first answer, and almost 2 years until my first (and only) question.

9:08 AM
I've only been here 4 months.. feels like longer (in a good way!)

@RichardU Just took a look back at my first ever TWP answer, and it reminded me of you ^^ workplace.stackexchange.com/a/55274/31777

Q: Can we track the positive effects of a popular question?

DibstarIn response to this question, is there a way in which we can work out the positive effects on traffic and questions following this? I've noticed a few good questions from users with referral bonuses but otherwise new to workplace, and assume they've been directed as that question came under the ...

A: How can I encourage Stack Overflow to rein in the 'subjective' vigilantes?

yannistl;dr We already tried supporting those questions, we even gave them their own site. Sadly, it didn't work out. C'est la vie. In 2010, a Stack Exchange site called Not Programming Related came out of Area51, the Stack Exchange staging zone. NPR was supposed to be a site where questions that ...

Q: What is the difference between being fired and being laid off?

DragonturtleThis may be seemingly obvious question, but I can't quite grasp the difference, and I also haven't found a satisfying answer. Is it something like when you get laid off you still get to work for a month ( or some time period ) at the company, and when fired, its instantaneous? Are there pros a...

Ugh, I'm tempted to hit the final close here just to get it off HNQ.
I actually think this is a good, albeit not great, question. But the answers are all pretty damn terrible.

Kaz
@Lilienthal I don't think it's a bad question. It would help a lot to narrow it down to a specific region though.

Q: Can we make the accepted answer check mark greener?

SaggingRufusCan we make it greener, or make the colour of the voting button a different colour entirely? I thought I had seen an accepted answer on question because my down vote blue is not that far off from the accepted blueish green. On other stack exchange site, the accepted answer colour is very differ...

Is it unethical to downvote a post and also comment "this is a great answer, I wish I could upvote it more than once"?

@MaskedMan I think I'm going to need to see an example of a post that would warrant that response

@DavidK Ok, then let's just make it less cheesy with downvote an answer and comment "+1, good answer".
Since "is it unethical" seems to be the flavour of the week around here, I thought I might as well get that off my chest. ;-)

Lol, gotcha
And yeah, ethics questions have been going crazy lately

Speaking of which, is it "lying by omission" if I upvote an answer and do not comment +1 good answer? That phrase also gets thrown around a lot.
I just found out that waiting to get your bonus before handing in your resignation is seen as "lying by omission" in some places, which greatly confuses me, so I am using another example to try to understand it. ;-)

Is it professional to vote to close a question you haven't read?

Q: Is it acceptable to bring a fidget cube to work?

Steven VascellaroI often find it difficult to stay focused for long periods of time without fidgeting in some way. Multiple studies1,2,3 have shown that fidgeting at work can help productivity . For me, this typically takes the form of paper clips, rubber bands, and pen clicking.. I've considered bringing a fidg...

the answers are downright abusive

@RichardU Yep. I screenshotted them just in case
Comments like those are exactly why I asked the question

@StevenVascellaro they've been deleted.

@RichardU There's already been 4 saying "No its a toy"
There's another getting downvote bombed now

@StevenVascellaro Since the community is kicking those answers to the curb, you have nothing to fear.
@StevenVascellaro I'm in IT, and people have Transformers on their desks, another guy had a bunch of rubber ducks. Don't let these people get to you.

Even so, the fact that some think that way, even if unjustified, is why I don't think the answer is as simple as "Sure, go ahead and bring it"
It's not necessarily something I need to focus
Even if the judgements are unjustified, as a 2 week-old intern, impressions are important
Also, hello! I'm pretty new to The Workplace. :P

6:25 PM
@StevenVascellaro don't look at what the individuals say, watch what the community does in response.
@StevenVascellaro I saw that, which is why I stepped in. I can assure you that the kind of abusive posts you've been receiving will not stand
Oh, and if you want to ping someone in here, use that @ sign before their name

@RichardU I don't think it's that simple. The abusive posts don't bother me really. I'm looking for a more neutral assessment weighing the negative connotations

@RichardU funny you mention those ducks, I just wrote an answer there using that example :)

@StevenVascellaro Well, welcome in any event. :D

Perfect example: My parents originally bought me the fidget cube to help with concentration, but even they were very hesitant about introducing it at work

\@StevenVascellaro enderland's answer is the best one.

6:29 PM
Even though they were trying to help, it became a touchy topic for me fairly quickly

@enderland great minds run in the same track

Agreed. Very good answer @enderland
"Ultimately, some people will horribly judge you, some will not care, and some will find it really interesting."
I'd bold that

I think in your job the reaction will be roughly the same as here: if anyone makes a problem about it, the rest of the office will probably look poorly on them, not you

@Erik it depends on the environment too
I've worked in major finance offices, where appearance matters a bit more
I was known as "the guy with a fancy keyboard/mouse" because I used an ergo keyboard of my own >.>

Yeah, I was assuming a workplace that wasn't entirely drone-like :P

6:34 PM
@Erik I think not having a degree and a few other quirks about me has actually been helpful to my career. I would never fit into such rigid environments.

Yeah, I avoid those as well

@StevenVascellaro I try to avoid bolding unless absolutely necessary, normally only do it if I have a way too tl;dr post hah
oh man that question looks HNQ bound already

@enderland I kinda expected it to. :P
I was really surprised to see nobody had asked that question yet

@enderland I was surprised at the rudeness of some of the answers. One of them was written by a user who's been irking people lately.
oooooo, the one related undeleted rude answer is getting bombed.

Somehow, I didn't expect fidget cubes be more controversial than my last trending question

Q: What is a less controversial name for the clothing item known as a "wife-beater" in the United States?

Steven VascellaroIn the United States, a white sleeveless shirt is often referred to as a "wife-beater". Typically I try to avoid using "wife-beater" due to its negative connotation. I've tried using a few different terms in the past, but each felt a bit too broad or generalized. Tank Top: Can refer to formal ...

I'm still trying to get that post removed from my "hot network questions"

6:44 PM
@StevenVascellaro I don't think you can, you mean on your "network profile?"

@StevenVascellaro You're a controversy magnet, eh? :D

@enderland Yeah. It's my third highest ranked question stackexchange.com/users/4030991/steven-vascellaro
@RichardU It only seems to happen in communities I'm not an active member in. :P

@StevenVascellaro My answers here tend to be very highly rated when I take someone to task, for some reason.

Q: Question still appears in my top network posts even after having it disassociated from my account

yeah it's annoying

Considering his earlier answer, this comment seems a bit ironic.

@enderland I have, at last count, 3 dragons and an origami swan inhabiting my desk ^^
Though actually, I'm probably most notable for being "The LARP guy".

I'm hoping to become known as "That guy who knows how to use AutoHotkey"

Kaz
@StevenVascellaro I think the word you're looking for is "Magician" ^^

7:38 PM
I have one of those shirts hanging up that says "I'm a ___ because BADASS isn't an official job title"
@StevenVascellaro Honestly, I don't think you have to worry about employers seeing that question. The fact that you are trying to find a more appropriate term to use should reflect positively.
The only thing might be explaining why you wanted to know in the first place, which could be completely benign, or just "I was curious"

@DavidK That's why I haven't disassociated the question from my account. I'm not necessarily ashamed of the question, but it makes me hesitant to link my network profile on a resume.

@StevenVascellaro I'm not sure how useful linking your SE profile would be anyways. I think you'd have to be a pretty high-rep user for it to matter

I'm always curious if my Workplace profile is a positive or a negative :v

@enderland I think if an employer saw the time of day that I usually post it would be a negative...

Is that one answer to Steven's question not getting deleted because people are having too much fun down-voting it?

7:53 PM
@RichardU It just needs 1 more

@DavidK "personal development" ?

What happens to rep if an answer is deleted from flagging?

@StevenVascellaro if it's deleted as a "rude/offensive" the user gets a 100 rep penalty (and loses all from the post, too)

beat me to it.

8:15 PM
Beth always has such good answers

What is up with these comments?
What kind of person compares a fidget cube to a vibrator?

@StevenVascellaro that would be Kilisi. He's..... Kilisi.

I'm attracting all the interesting characters, aren't I?

8:31 PM
@StevenVascellaro you get used to Kilisi. He always speaks his mind, no matter the consequences
AAAAAAAAAAAND another one....

Q: Colleague is writing hours he did not work
