Oh dear, our old friend is now back with The Cheetos Incident.
May 24 at 0:02, by Joe Strazzere
@SoylentGray Season 1 Episode 10: A slacking, pizza-eating programmer and clueless accidental executive, who uses mnemonic devices poorly and doesn't look like a Lord of The Rings character reviews the browser history of his workers only to discover that one of them is plotting to give herself cancer so she can get time off from work. Hilarity ensues!

Q: New HR Rep that I do not get along with

James ChevroletTwo years ago, before I was in my current role, I got someone fired. Let's call him John. Long story short, we had to ban Cheeto's from the entire office. I knew he would do something involving Cheeto's, so I "anonymously" ratted him out. Somehow, it became a rumor that I was involved with gettin...

As @JoeStrazzere described it so eloquently: "You can't make this stuff up... or can you?"

@Nofel Just wanted to double check that you are ok with me referencing you and the kettle incident on the meme post?
3
A: Practical Concept Handbook for navigating The Workplace

motosubatsuMeme: Boiling milk in the kettle Origin: The incident in this question Cultural Height: September 2017 Background: TWP user Nofel (a.k.a cookiemonster) wanted to heat up some milk at work, reasoning that kettles heat water and milk is liquid like water he decided the electric kettle belonging ...

@MaskedMan It's ok Monica has taken steps and deleted the question

8:14 AM
I'm pretty thankful for being memeless.

@motosubatsu I hope that puts an end to the stream of "interesting" questions.
A "meme" which only has relevance in the chat room is not of much use in "navigating the site" imho.

@MaskedMan I suppose it depends whather you
whether you consider the chat room to be part of the greater whole of TWP
tbh I'm not married to it... if people want it gone then I'm more than happy to get rid
for something that's supposed to be a light hearted demonstration of our community the whole thing seems to be causing a disproportionate amount of angst

A lot of it results from the confusion over whether it is meant to be lighthearted or serious. Calling the post a "handbook" certainly doesn't help matters.

Not the name I would have picked if I'm honest, but it was DarkCyngus' call there

I love Nofel as I have said here a few times before, but I honestly don't believe knowing his electric kettle meme is necessary to use this site.
Just using that as an example, I have nothing against your post @motosubatsu

8:30 AM
@MaskedMan yeah no worries... I think I'm just starting to get the impression that the whole exercise was a mistake. I had one of my posts flat out deleted by lili because it was misinterpreted as a dig at people when it was actually the opposite. I'm not here to have a go at anyone
in fact I've just removed both my posts on there.. life's too short to have people misinterpreting my intentions and thinking I'm a dick

8:51 AM
Morning
@motosubatsu go ahead.
@Dukeling thnx

@motosubatsu Yup. I sometimes find myself deleting my answer with the "life's too short to ague about this" reason.
Sometimes I'll tick the "boring conversation anyway" box.

When they asked about company name, I said I will tell u when I get there
did i pissed them off

I don't see much harm in saying what the company name is and the role/functions. I wouldn't disclose salary details though.

well when my peer was pushing me "we need someone for designing", "u did very good designing". I told him my work isn't designing there, it is engineering
he ws shocked

Your HR department will know anyway as there's going to be a references request from your new company.

8:58 AM
I don't wanna hurt anyone at here

You're moving on, it's a natural thing.

should I tell my first to contact
like people who r invloved with me
besides my manager
as he asked me on dinner yesterday if I told X
I said no, so he told him there

9:12 AM
You can tell anyone you want to.

I think it is post stress that is onto me
because on my manager nature of taking the lead

9:34 AM
@motosubatsu Absolutely! I deleted my "meme" there as well. I was confused by what those downvotes meant. I don't care about the downvotes, but it wasn't clear if the community disagreed that we voted to close too many questions or that they thought the meme was encouraging us to do it even more. Regardless, I don't want to make my life more complex worrying about what other people want to do. :)

10:14 AM
@motosubatsu @Snow any good BF deals?

I don't know. I'm not looking for anything. Usually when I want to buy something, I'll buy it and not wait for the sales. I don't really buy stuff I don't need because it's cheaper.

10:31 AM
I need headphones
yesterday I was shocked to see that samsung had its earplugs out, which I thought was a idea in my head
even in movies sometimes I see a action that I made in my head
damn, I can make millions.

@Nofel not really looked much to be honest.. I don't really have a burning need for anything right now
I'm toying with the idea of getting a steering wheel for my Xbox but if I'm being honest with myself I'm unsure how much I'll really use it

I could buy few stuff but I m shrugging off the desire to just coz it is less expensive as I m gonna need money to money
already not there yet to make it complete, so have to borrow
ah games
its been ages since I played
last one was NFS MW2

Morning, fellas

@motosubatsu I have a fantatec setup in my loft. I used to use it quite a bit.

morning @jserv

10:39 AM
I am counting my beans to see if I can afford a big purchase today

what beans

@Snow there's a good deal on the Logitech kit on amazon for £129..but then 'm going to need a stand for it (another ~£100+) and then I've spent over £200

@Nofel What beans indeed. I'm looking at my bank account.

10:56 AM
so what are beans @jserv
shoiuld I email my new office HR asking them if I can put a address of my permanent like my in laws

@Nofel Just a euphemism for money, like how people call accountants 'bean-counters'

as I be moving in a month time
ah cool.

@MaskedMan @motosubatsu when we did the Security memes post, we generally got agreement first (in chat) before the sets that named individuals. Just in case of upsetting anyone...

I wish I had beans = money.

Animojis are awesome. There, I've said it.

11:03 AM
@RoryAlsop yeah I did that for one of them as it was something of a slightly "teasing" related one but I didn't for the other as I didn't think it was necessary as it was complimentary. Funnily enough the one where I was being "nice" about people is the one that got me a kicking from a mod suggesting that it was a personal attack
mea culpa really - I should remember that humor is not something that is universal
I've removed all my posts on it now to avoid any future confusion which I think is for the best - I'm going to blame it on my excessive lemsip consumption this week
I swear it's driving me loopy

You're lucky you just have lemsip. My partner makes me put my face over a bowl of boiling water that's had olbas oil dropped in it. It's like having holding your face over boiling paint stripper.

@Snow r u victim of domenstic violence? :P

Seems that way sometimes.

@Snow oh I know it well.. was de rigour during my days of sinus infections, as was direct application of olbas oil to my face.
if you think inhaling it is eye-watering try having it rubbed on your skin just below your eyes!

What sort of strange hazing ritual are you guys talking about?

11:10 AM
snow is telling how his partner is cruel to him
my mrs had her congestion, I boiled water and empty a full spoon of vicks it in
she was fine by noon.
I though Olbas oil was for kids

It's for adults too.

I never knew

I've been quite lucky in that I haven't been seriously sick at any point this year. Exercise, sleep, and hydration.
I'm aware how intolerably smug this makes me sound, but I hate getting sick.

exercise I miss that

@Snow yep.. if anything it's a bit strong for use with kids

11:12 AM
I was so fit, I gfot a promo job on insta
now I am fat af

I also spent about four months last year in an office full of people who were constantly stressed and never recovered from whatever little infection they got
@Nofel That's impressive. How'd you land that?

@jserv I posted my journey, I am very hardcore when it come to fitness given I can reach gym, and then strict healthy food.
I guess they were following, so they gt in contact

@Snow I stick to my own mix of whisky, lemon juice, sugar and boiling water :-)

I'd love to land a fitness-related job
@RoryAlsop Sounds delicious

Yup - sometimes I don't even need to be sick to have it :-)

11:15 AM
Whiskey and ice. Suits me fine.

I wonder why whisky is so not so sweet
it is so hard on throat

Depends. Some whiskies are smooth, some harsher. My favourite whiskies are very very smooth

@RoryAlsop Smokier the better, here. Delicious, life-shorteningly rich flavours

I do love Dalwhinnie

I tried jack daniels
it wasn't as smooth as the ad shows
I thought it will sweet as coke

11:18 AM
It is if you mix it with coke...

I wnt to hard rock cafe to have shot of shot. man it was awesome
vodka, rasberry and i donno what else he put
sweet fusion
loved it
10 quid

@Nofel cool cheers
I crumbled.. steering wheel, pedals and playseat are on their way

@Nofel of course that is a bourbon, which is very different to a whisky or a whiskey
And a good single malt should never be mixed with anything :-)
I have got back to my roots - as a teenager I worked for a distillery, and now I have distilled my own whisky :-)

I have had a eye procedure, strangly when I do drink, I feel my eye heavy

Very happy with it - it took a few years, but is delicious. A bit smoky, and a bit peaty, but very smooth

11:30 AM
@RoryAlsop sounds divine... you've nigh on described my perfect whiskey there

@RoryAlsop That's fantastic. Love smoky and peaty.

I casked it in an American oak cask, lightly charred, previously filled with port
Have bottled a third of it, and popped the rest into a French oak cask previously used for bourbon - so we'll see how that goes in a few years
@motosubatsu I grew up next door to the Highland Park, so that's how I like 'em

@RoryAlsop Do you sell any of this, or is this purely for pleasure?

This is the first time I have done it (we helped a friend fund a new distillery a few years back) so thus far it has been experimenting. I sell the gin I've been making while waiting though...
@jserv after Christmas presents for family I may sell some :-)

you've got me googling for how to guides and stills now

11:36 AM
Best and simplest - befriend a distiller.

@RoryAlsop Have I ever told you how close I think we've become, Rory?

Or, one of the things Strathearn Distillery offers in addition to the usual experience days is longer term learning secondments. I met one guy there who was on a three month visit from Scandinavia. Learning so he could go back and set up his own distillery
@jserv :-)

oh.. it's illegal without a distillers licence

Yarr
In many countries

that might kill my plans stone dead then

11:38 AM
You can't call it Whiskey without a license. Without a license, you may call if "Hootch".

@motosubatsu I think you can brew just for yourself, right?
Distill, I mean

@jserv that's what I thought but apparently not - "It is illegal to manufacture spirits in the UK without a distiller's licence which is required under the provisions of section 12 of the Alcoholic Liquor Duties Act 1979 and this includes manufacture for "own/domestic use"."
looks like you're fine with wine and beer but not spirits

@motosubatsu Interesting. I wonder why.

@jserv probably down to how easily you could make stuff that is practically lethal due to strength I guess.

@motosubatsu It occurred to me this is probably the reason you rarely see rubbing alcohol in shops anymore

11:46 AM
Cynically,I bet the reason is duty paid

@RoryAlsop A good point

@RoryAlsop yeah probably.. had a quick read on the relevant info and it's all basically about making sure HMRC gets paid

This conversation has made me crave some Laphroaig

tbh I could probably do it and I doubt there would ever be any issue unless someone ratted me out, realistically though I'm probably too paranoid to risk it
boo! hiss! to HMRC

Plenty of people are able to buy home brew kits without notifying HMRC.

11:52 AM
@Snow yeah they are easily available.. and to be honest the chances of getting caught are probably negligible unless you're an idiot and are selling it to randomers

Yes. You can buy home brew kits from amazon and there's no mention of the paperwork. buy/brew/drink. You can even buy distilling equipment.
I don't think HMRC would care unless you intend to sell or provide alcohol to minors.
Well, the police would want to know about supplying to minors. They won't get taxed for that.

@Snow yeah.. I was looking at these: lovebrewing.co.uk/still-spirits-starter-bundles

Personally, I don't drink enough to merit brewing anything.

I don't really.. I probably drink less than half a dozen times a year
I think it appeals in the same way as my home bakin efforts

As an intellectual exercise as opposed to something you'd do all the time? I get you there.

11:58 AM
@Snow yeah pretty much.. I'm finding great enjoyment in making things myself at the moment
my slow cooked roast beef-in-ale sunday lunch last weekend was delicious for example

Yeah. I have some models that are waiting to be built and spray painted.

and I did it just to see how it would turn out
@Snow I did some model-making earlier in life..but soon learned I don't have the fine dexterity to make something that doesn't look like the work of a crazed toddler
I used to love making complicated machines with lego technic thoug

haha...just had the post come through the letterbox - including a letter from non-other than HMRC! :D
they're listening

big brother

12:05 PM
true it was only a reminder about my self-assessment for tax but let's not let the facts get in the way of the joke :)

Love it when they send u money back saying, we owe u X quids

@Nofel I think I've only ever had that once...and they ended up asking for it back two months later

12:23 PM
@motosubatsu shld have told "I have spend it already"
oh the joy on taking extra time for ur task
yet doing it 2 days b4 and having 2 days to urself

12:35 PM
I had a tax rebate of £800 last year
I was just thinking... why were they taking so much?

crazy mofos is all I can they r

1:04 PM
In all seriousness I actually have a fair amount of sympathy for the people at HMRC - they don't get to choose the policies they have to implement and they are basically guaranteed to be hated by just about everyone
sure they make mistakes and can be..difficult. But they can literally never do "right"
in the eyes of the public

yea they and army do the job as we do ours
hate ir ot love it.
its the policy makers who r worse

Q: How can I stop taking things personally and become a better professional?

hans34I was mocked, taunted, insulted and belittled by a colleague many times. One day, I got tired of this and in anger asked him to leave me alone. He is a type of a hooligan, always laughing loudly and foolishly and thinks that I am a weak person. Now, he has started spreading rumors at my office,...

^ my "something fishy" radar is going off..
the original wording of the question used the phrase "He is an adult man, not a kid." which is an odd turn of phrase and it was used verbatim in the original version of this question as well:
1
Q: My colleague has spread fake rumors about me. How can I deal with this professionally?

mark678One of my colleague was insulting me, making fun of me for no reason. In anger, I snubbed him and told him to get lost. From that day we have not talked. Its been 3 years now. I do not desire to change my job or office. I prefer to make this situation work. But for 3 years, he has been spreading...

despite the two being posted under different registered accounts

@MaskedMan nope.. both are from the same perspective
but good obscure trope skills

Oh ... I thought the second post was written by the "bully" of the original post.
Now that I re-read it, you are right, it is the same perspective.

the commonalities are less evident in the current forms of them as well since the standout phrase has been edited out of both

I love it when the question appears in the news feed here after it has already been closed.

2:56 PM
Interview at a company I really want to work for, in a country I really want to live, on a team I really don't want be on. I can't decide if it's fortunate or unfortunate that I only managed to convey the last of those things.

2 out of 3 aint bad

3:14 PM
I edited out the "he is an adult" sentence as it wasn't relevant and only served to make the OP look worse.

@Snow oh I don't disagree with the edit.. as you say it didn't paint the OP in a very sympathetic light at all

morning

it's just odd that he felt the need to register twice to talk about the same incident/coworker
nowt stranger than folk as they say

@motosubatsu kid != child
hey @motosubatsu what is the thing on your avatar picture?

@DarkCygnus it's a Woeleecher

3:34 PM
5 + white, for a 3/5 ... good effect though, plays well with White, like those Angels I've seen that benefit from gaining life (something like if you gain at least 10 life in a turn then you opponent sucks your **** big time).
Not a magic player, but have seen it and actually tried a few times
Lol, sometimes arguing in comments can be really interesting, like when it's with one of you guys
but sometimes its a bit annoying at some point when users just want to argue...
I loled at the recurring strategy I use to encourage them to write their own answers in a polite way :)

I just get frustrated with the commenters who clearly haven't read the answer in the first place

yep
Most of that arguing from their part is due to not reading what suggested

@DarkCygnus I've been playing MTG off-and-on for about 25 years.. still not very good at it though!

It's interesting to watch :)
@motosubatsu Where are my cookies?!.... and my milk is also gone??

Kaz
@motosubatsu I made what I consider an extremely smart strategic decision back when I was 10, which was that I would play MTG, but only ever with other peoples' decks ^^
Ditto Warhammer

3:51 PM
@Kaz that's some good solid financial planning right there
a friend who plays pretty heavily has easily spent several thousand pounds on cards over the years
and that's not counting the MTGO purchases either

Kaz
Yeah. I immediately saw where that was going, and decided I had neither the time nor the money to spend on that kind of curation.

@Kaz yeah it's nuts.. although if I had picked up a few strategic things back in the day they would be worth silly money now

sup everyone
I didn't know I closed down window. I thought every1 was silent
lol

@Nofel and we all thought you were ignoring us :P

4:06 PM
hahha ditto

It's me that everyone ignores....

where's @TheSnarkKnight

Kaz
@motosubatsu I know a friend who was in a shop once with 10, sealed, Black Lotuses on the counter display, for £50 each.

@Snow I start my day with u ;)

Kaz
In lighter news, my Crypto Investments are up 40% this week :)

4:08 PM
@MisterPositive I am having such a big cookie, I wanna send it to u.
@Kaz ur studying hard

@Kaz oh god.. they are worth thousands a piece now!

Kaz
@motosubatsu Probably about $10,000 each, yep.

yes

guys which lego set is good
for 2 yrs old
my boy is turning 2 tomottow

4:14 PM
I also got the Luck to have one in my hands some years ago
was soooo tempted to fake that I tore it or bended it

Kaz
@Nofel Isn't it still a choking hazard at that age?

@Kaz I mean bricks
sorry

@Nofel at that age I'd be looking at duplo instead

bingo

@Nofel thought lego was 6+ or 4+

4:15 PM
Yes, Duplo is age appropriate.

@DarkCygnus hehe.. I've never actually handled one! I've had one of the Moxes once - my idiot brother threw out the binder with it in
geez..even white bordered variants of the BL are going for ~£4k

Duplo (trademarked as DUPLO) is a product range of the construction toy Lego, designed for children aged 1½ to 5 years old. Duplo bricks are twice the length, height and width of traditional Lego bricks, making them easier to handle and less likely to be swallowed by younger children. Despite their size, they are still compatible with traditional Lego bricks. Initially launched in 1969, the Duplo range has gone on to include sets with figures, cars, houses and trains. Duplo is manufactured in Nyíregyháza, Hungary. == History == Duplo bricks were introduced in 1969, in four colors: red, yellow...
@Snow ... get an account on Parenting haha

so many to choose from
He has his first duplo

I am not a father yet, but I already see myself buying legos "for my child" ... and actually end up ordering some new Star Wars model or something lol

@DarkCygnus standard operating procedure :)

4:20 PM
I don't have any kids. Just nephews/nieces.

BTW have you seen the Lego Movie? (the first one?) I don't know why I liked it SO much

we all have kids in us
I am more excited than my son
he amazes me and I amaze him

EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!!
2

@DarkCygnus because it's AWESOME

@Snow YUP

4:21 PM
@Snow that was stuck in my head for about a week after I saw the movie
:D

unts unts unts unts (8)

I liked the first movie more than the second to be honest.

Yeah the first is the best

@Snow by second are you referring to the Lego Batman movie?

Yes. Was there another second one?

4:22 PM
lol
there was the "third" one about ninja go.. havent seen it

Ninjago. Not seen it, probably won't.

But the first one is unbeatable. The story, the adult/child perspective, the though of universes and scales (and if we are God's Legos lol)

Right, I'm going. Thai food tonight. Can't wait.

yummy
damn I hate you, I still have about 2:30 hours till lunch over here ... and now I am hungry
(takes a sip of water to fool the belly)

4:46 PM
Have a good weekend everyone

you too @Nofel enjoy your celebration with your family :)

thanks

5:44 PM
sup @RoryAlsop

5:58 PM
Evening! All good. Enjoying a freezing day in Scotland
Kids all dropped off in different places, now 4 hours of peace and quiet till I have to get them again
How's things with you @DarkCygnus

6:12 PM
@RoryAlsop great. Also cold day over this other side... really wanted to stay in bed today :)

6:37 PM
@DarkCygnus I rather prefer winter to summer - I get to work in the dark and get home in the dark and it never gets too hot.

That's the good thing of being near the equator... you get less temperature change throughout the year. Its really mild all year long
I may say we are "cold" here ... but you would probably be without t-shirt and on shorts lol

@DarkCygnus was -3 when I dropped off my daughter. It's 0 right now :-)
I did wear a jacket today
:-)

lol
we must be near 10-12 here... that's already cold for my country
Hey @RoryAlsop you have something like this over InfoSec right?

Q: Practical Concept Handbook for navigating The Workplace

Q: The Memes of Information Security

Andrei BotalovThere are memes common to whole Stack Exchange. But after spending some time in The DMZ it becomes evident that Information Security has it's own memes (e.g. rory). I therefore propose that this space be used to document the memes endemic to Information Security's culture. One meme per answer p...

In fact, you seem to be a meme there LOL

oh - we have a memes one yes, but that isn't what you seemed to ask
I thought you were asking about a handbook or faq
@DarkCygnus I'm two, technically

In part that was what I asked
I thought this was a good idea here
where maybe we could gather some memes of concepts that are frequently used in answers

7:04 PM
@DarkCygnus ahh - I get you. Sorry - I read the headline without realising that was your memes post.

but given the nature of this site
Please take a look at it if you may

So - what we did was extensively discuss proposed memes in chat before posting them
with the possible exception of ones about mods - where we were just told they were getting posted

I see
The thing is that FAQs here we have
but most of the times they are custom
so you cant' just throw the same answer to the question, you have to adapt it
thats why I though of a mix of memes and "faqs"
as basically memes area ideas and concepts, that are handled frequently.
But, seems that we have different thoughts of doing that in TWP

@DarkCygnus I think Sec.SE had been around a while and a core group of 10k+ regulars used those memes regularly in chat (and in posts) and when someone suggested making a collection. It didn't take long to gain approval. I'm sure there were ones that didn't get on the list...
But you need buy in first

@RoryAlsop yea, probably we need more user mass here to justify that
thanks for the feedback :)
