@R11G Hello

11 hours later…
Jim
12:52 PM
@Chad It could go either way
I migrated it (perhaps a bit too hastily), and it has done well over there

@RhysW even if it is a small group then the question is joining the do not participate group, So it is still basically the same thing
@Jim I hoped it would

Jim
But thinking more about it, I'm sure it would've been fine had it stayed here

@Jim I don't think so. It already had a few downvotes and close votes. It was a better fit there.

Jim
A couple close votes (and migration flags yes, but it had 4 up and only one down vote
and two answer
I'm not convinced it would've actually gotten closed had I not migrated it

We could have rewritten it to make it less task specific but then I think it loses a good part of the original question. It fits programmers well and is getting great answers there.
At least it did not have a you just need to quit your job answer yet... but I could feel it coming :p
@Jim I think we could have rewritten it and saved it. But then the OP does not get their question answered. I think a lot of times we want to save questions so bad that we rewrite them and then the OP gets an answer but it is not to the problem they are having.
If programmers had rejected it then I agree it should have stayed here.

Jim
1:03 PM
@Chad I do agree with that
THe primary reason I didn't try to make any changes was that it wasn't a bad question
It had a good question in there, and it was well-written
nothing to really improve
I approached it more from the "where can this user get the best answer?" angle than from the "does this question fit on our site?" angle

@Jim Our scope is supposed to be problems at work besides your actual job duties. That is on the wrong side of that line to me. Though it could have easily been generalised it would have lost some of the important nuances that programmers deal with

i said 'aspiring programmers', you know, the people who can't get their questions answered because they don't know the answer already......individual problems be damned... — ecline6 9 hours ago

@enderland I do not want you to review my resume... but could you look and see if you notice any problems?

Q: "It is with extremely mixed emotions.."

boboboboWhenever somebody resigns, or does something out of the ordinary, the president at our institution always sends out an email that begins It is with extremely mixed emotions that I announce the resignation of so-and-so. He's leaving to go do another job Z at institute W. I am kind of confus...

This question do better on English?

@Chad Yeah, probably. That's not really a workplace issue

Jim
I'll see if ELL wants it

1:14 PM
Its not a bad question.. I can squint my eyes and see it here but I do not see it doing well with our trolls more vocal users
isnt ELL a different site

Jim
Yes

@Chad Oh, haha, that's what I was thinking too :)

Jim
I'm thinking it might be better there. Any reason EL&U would be better?

@Jim it's not really an ELL thing, more of basic english imo

It would probably work at either

Q: How to respond to overly specific technical questions in an inteview?

QuinmaDuring a recent job interview I was asked what I consider to be overly technical specific questions. These questions are too specific because generally it is knowledge I don't need to store in my brain. For example, I am looking for a Software Developer position and I was asked many specific q...

is a good question at the core... but when you read the comments it turns out overly specific means general and basic questions that the OP does not know :p

Jim
1:20 PM
@enderland I think basic english might be more appropriate at ELL than EL&U
plus it's a beta site, would probably be more welcoming

@Jim english is beta still? uh

Jim
anyway I will discuss it with both sites, see which (if either) wants it

huh

Jim
ELL is beta, EL&U is not

@Jim oh, gotcha. I guess I completely see this as an english speaker asking about english usaage
which makes it harder to think ELL

Jim
1:27 PM
ELL will take it; they will sort out EL&U vs ELL on their own

Q: How can a conference handle harassment outside the conference?

MelissaIn the past a conference I've been involved with had a problem with one presenter calling another presenter a gendered slur on Twitter preceding the conference. At the time we had no code of conduct at all, but we were thinking of adopting the one based on either Drupalcon's. But I am not sure th...

Thoughts on this? Net votes = +1, closed with no comments
I might be a bit specific to the situation at hand, but it could probably be generalized pretty easily

Asking us to render an opinion on an actual event that has already happened and been handled.
Even if it had not happened I do not think asking us to judge the policy is constructive
I think the question could be reworded to what can we do to protect our presenters and attendees from harassment? Though that is a different question than was asked
The plus side of that question is Jmac's answer is still valid

if it's really harassment isn't that a legal issue at an offsite conference?

Is it really harassment is off topic
0
A: How can a conference handle harassment outside the conference?

nadyneI think that a code of conduct is a fine thing for a conference to have, and Drupalcon's is a fine place to start. The code of conduct should be communicated clearly to both conference presenters and conference attendees, as well as the potential consequences of breaches of the code of conduct...

I think this answer needs to be removed. It is nothing more than judgement on what happened and not really an answer to the question.

1:43 PM
@Jim Seems discussiony. Plus it's conference planning moreso than a work environment. I'm not sure that would be on topic. Especially given it's basically about making policies about outside stuff

@BenBrocka well some people work for convention centers, too
@Chad what trolls. this site is a beacon of collaboration, teamwork, and unified vision

@enderland True. But I don't know. Just feels a little outside the boundries somehow
Didn't vote on it either way though

Q: is this a good reason to tell when looking for a new job?

MaKoI want to change jobs. ugh

@Chad If you assume it is harassment and the question is "how do you handle X" it's not a moral judgement
@enderland title hurt brain

Q: Can we add "Questions asking for advice" to the list of off-topic questions?

enderlandWe keep getting "I want advice on XXXX" types of questions which are all vague and more appropriate for a discussion board - not a Q/A site. Can we please update the first item under the list of off topic things on the FAQ: "What should I do?" / "Should I take this job?" / “I need advice, he...

I can't bounty this on our meta :(

Can't bounty on metas. Except MSO because it's weird

I know

Jim
Sorry @enderland, forgot to make the change. Will try to get to it today

3:05 PM
@BenBrocka The question currently asked is "Is the policy that polycon used a good policy?"
@enderland I stand by my original revised statment
@BenBrocka wierd special

isnt this question a dupe too
I generalized the question so it is no longer so localized.

1 hour later…
4:37 PM
HI
anyone?

@R11G whats up

feeling low :(

:(

I need some advice chad. My colleague got a double hike than me. we started off together. and I feel very bad for myself.

4:55 PM
@R11G do you enjoy your job and feel you get enough pay?

@R11G Talk with your manager. Find out what it would take to get you the best possible review next year. Do not talk about your colleague's raise.
Then follow up every month or so to see how you are doing towards meeting those objectives. Your review should not be a surprise.
Do not argue with him about how you are doing anything already.
But feel free to ask if you do not understand how you can meet the results he expects or if you are not sure why you do not meet them now
I think you could make a great question out of "I am not happy with my review, how should I approach improving it for next year?"

@Chad this might be copy/pastable to that :)
7
A: How can an employee perform a self-appraisal without being arrogant?

enderlandThis process begins way before you start writing your year-end evaluation. The words you write should be a mere formality in terms of your manager evaluating your performance. Make goals you discuss with your manager for the year (or until the evaluation time period). Make these meaningful. Sma...

but I also agree that would be a GREAT question here

@Chad Thanks!
Actually I enjoy my job and its enough pay. But then I feel it will be awful if I do not excel.

@R11G two people can do the exact same work but be perceived in DRAMATICALLY different ways, too

@enderland this is what im beginning to realize. Also, the amount you get hike depends on various factors - I think so !

5:07 PM
@R11G The key to a good review is making sure that you understand the expectations of your manager. If you do not talk to them about it you are shooting blind trying to hit a target that is probably moving, because if they have not told their expectations to you then they probably have not thought about what their expectations actually are.

@Chad valid point! agreed. I have taken a note of this.
Idk if its right of me to compare myself with the reviews my colleagues get. I would love to know people's opinion on it!
Infact, I am more troubled by the fact that my work has less quality/value for the organization :-(

@R11G comparing yourself to others is always going to let you down, there are always people who will do more work, spend longer hours, just be better/more experienced, etc

I just don't subscribe to this theory! I don't get it simply.
Why on earth, should I be the one who is not the best in the business ??!
Am I born to be the second best? WHY ??!

@R11G I have absolutely no problems with the idea that "I will not be the best in the business." this is because my goals in life are far greater than just being the "best at my job" - I will NOT trade other things (friends, family, faith, etc) for the sake of my job
I am not going to work 60 hour weeks
I am going to prefer a job I love doing which doesn't take over my life over more $$$$$ or fancy titles or super long hours
I even chose a career path based on this

@enderland Shouldn't we try to actually realize our potential ? If that means that we need to work 50-60hr/week whats wrong with it? Yes, there lies the danger of $$$ taking over everything. but still...

5:17 PM
@R11G because when I'm 50 years old, I'm not going to look back on my life and go, "damn, I wish I had spent more hours at the office"

@enderland The thing is someone with almost similar societal background as you is better than you... how do you live with that fact ?

@R11G I have an incredibly fulfilling life - my priorities are completely set, and while important, work is not at the top of my list of priorities

The moment my family got to know of the above fact, they asked me "do you grasp/understand the work you do? You don't seem to be good at it"

where do you live?
I don't care at all what my parents/family thinks about my lifestyle

Im not tlaking personally about you. just asking your thoughts.

5:21 PM
(also, this isn't to say I don't try to the best at what I do, I am in fact pretty good at my work. I just don't have a goal of "must be #1")

ah okay.
@enderland India

my priorites in life are, in this order:
1) God
2) maintaining myself (nothing else is possible if I let myself go to pieces)
3) Family
4) church/friends
5) work
that priority list applies to every decision I make
(I've spent a lot of time refining my list of priorities, btw)

mhmm. i see

@enderland And worse people who get a pass despite working less, being less skilled, etc
@R11G My response to my parents critism like that was it must be a genetic default... what did you do to me?

@enderland I just want that my parents feel proud of me someday. appreciate me

5:26 PM
@R11G so for me to get a less than top review is ok, because it's not at the top of my priority list. this isn't to say I don't try hard at work - or get subpar reviews (I'm actually going to have a conversation with my boss, tomorrow, about what I need to do to get to the higher review levels, but if he says "work 10 more hours a week" or something like that, well....)

The truth is we grow through failure. Do not fear failure, but learn from it and grow.

@R11G I guess that's something only YOU can answer for yourself. Will you let that parental pressure define who you are and how you feel about yourself?
@Chad indeed. and getting a "meets expectations" is not necessarily failure, either

@R11G I am convinced that appreciation is impossible. But they are already proud of you or they wouldnt have such high expectations.
@enderland I would prefer to get a you suck go away review!

@enderland Well, if my closed ones don't feel good about me. whats the point of having a family then

@R11G if your family only felt good about you if you worked 90 hours a week, would you do that? I mean, at a certain point, you have to do what's right for you - not whats right for others
I've felt a lot of pressure with different family pressures in my life to do things differently

5:29 PM
@R11G You are confusing what they say for how they feel. We humans are really bad about conveying those things

sometimes though, I just have to say (either to myself or them), "we disagree on this, but I respet where you are coming from"

@enderland I see your point. Im just striving to be "accepted" by those who matter me the most.
@Chad yeah.. i'm learning it as im growing

@R11G I think there is a cultural difference here, too. As an American, it is probably easier for me to more easily focus the question of, "where does my value come from?" to not be from my family

@enderland yeah. i know.

@R11G that being said, in my personal life I've had this issue too - trying to separate "where does my value come from?" to not be even so much defined by myself but God - which is also equally as counter-cultural here

5:35 PM
I have decided to score my value by SE :P

I would value my parents telling me good job or something more than a million $.
That would be an amazing feeling.

I also believe in GOD but not strictly religious.
Maybe my opinion has got skewed due to my thoughts, but I feel HE sent us to achieve what all we possibly can.

well I mean more I've had to work to overcome a VERY strong societal belief on "where does my value come from?" too

ah okay. got it.

so I understand how difficult it is to try to not let your family define the "where does my value come from" question :)

hmm
:)

5:43 PM
@Chad lol, I missed this earlier. Nice. Easy to measure then - just don't compare yourself to Jon Skeet :)

@enderland ... thanks for totally ruining my self worth :p

@Chad you can compare yourself to me then instead?

@enderland I did until you pointed out someone else :p

@Chad muhahahah. I guess I don't feel too bad ;)

I was enjoying my smug superiority of a couple hundred points

5:47 PM
@Chad that's only a couple hundred strategic downvotes over the next few weeks : |

lol

6:35 PM
Now how do we promote that great question so it gets the kind of attention the slappng with my boss questions get

6:46 PM
@Chad slap it
thoughone way is to UV all the answers and question (since they factor into the formula...)
or spam it on twitter or something so it gets lots of views

7:13 PM
@enderland I have 3 followers on twitter and I am pretty sure 2 of them are government monitors wanting to know when I am ready to launch my plan to take over the world.

World Domination

Proposed Q&A site for evil overlords, super villains, tycoons, or anyone interested in conquering the world and making tons of money. Discuss strategy, secret lairs, minions and dealing with lousy heroes. Get unique insight on how villains deal with every day problems.

Closed before being launched.

@enderland I want to appeal the decision to close it
I really need to know how i get my sharks to quit eating the frikkin lazers

7:40 PM
@Chad make robotic sharks

@enderland isnt that kinda cheating?

@Chad play to win in world domination. this is one area you gotta be first ;)

@enderland Next thing you know you will tell me not to explain my entire plan to the "Hero" before I abandon him to die in a overly complex deathtrap.

@Chad Yeah, it's just easier to pull the trigger. You can taunt the corpse too, almost as fun

you know you just read the Hero with the air quotes :p

7:54 PM
that's amusing
rpboably applies to 90% of SE users

5 if you count TNG:Trekkees as different that TOS Trekkees
because TOS trekkees are offended by the existance of JLP

TNG > TOS

I agree

I don't even think it's close, either

cause of that episode with Diana

7:57 PM
unless you take a few of those first seasons of TNG lol

8:07 PM
@Chad the question appears to be hitting the popular question list...
#5 now

:)
its got 2 great answers already

I like @HLGEMs answer a lot

me too
he is very polarizing with me I either love his answers or completely hate them. I dont think I have seen one I was like meh~

@Chad she *

really?

8:10 PM
@Chad I'm pretty sure - about 99% at least

@enderland there are no girlz on the interwebz

@Chad both the high rep people here are women, I think ;)

what is funny is beth comes in to chat and its like in real life I am afraid to talk :p

A: Mac-like alt-tab replacement for Windows 7?

mcobrienUsing AutoHotkey, you can get a Command-Tilde equivalent by mapping a shortcut to Alt+F6 (which switches windows of the current app, as Daniel Beck said). I use the following simple script to do this (I map Alt+` (backquote), which is "!`" in AutoHotKey's syntax: !`:: Send !{F6}

YES. Finally!
though powerpoint is wtfstupid apparently
go figure
as is chrome? argg
