I wanted to get some input from the community on this post:

A: How can I approach career development with a boss who doesn't seem to support this?

Joe Strazzere How can I develop my career when my direct manager does not seem to have any interest in helping me? Many of us don't depend on our direct managers when formulating and executing career plans. You can learn new skills on your own. For instance, you can read books, magazines, websites, forum...

@jmort253 It has a downvote from me. It seems to avoid the question at hand. Its the equivalent of saying 'How can i further my career' and it being answered with 'its simple, you further your career'
The answer says to basically 'get more skills' without saying how and why those skills can and should be applied and how applying and learning those skills will help further your career.

8:21 AM
@jmac good call on the question edit. Was going to do it myself but ya beat me to it!

@SpikyBlue Thanks -- I figured it would just get closed, and I like jmort's idea of hijacking questions to mold them in to something greater

@jmac me too, though im always wary of editing too largely

Yeah, that's why I came in here, to point out what I did
In line with jmort's answer here, I've aggressively edited the following question to bring it more in line with site guidelines. If I'm doing it wrong or it isn't appropriate, feel free to discuss on the meta and/or here (though my time zone is totally different from you guys)

Q: What information/guarantees should I get from a company in financial difficulty?

Rumit ParakhiyaMy current employer has been running in to financial difficulties and has fallen behind on salary for a month at times. We were not given a lot of information on what the cause of the financial troubles were, or how they would be solved, so I applied for a job with a more financially secured comp...

@jmac brilliant edit, much better and more focussed than the original

@jmort253 We have a back it up rule that states that answers are supposed to be complete and explain why they are right. That one says what you can do but not how you can do it. So are left to assume that the OP is right that those techniques will work. To be complete the OP should give some examples of how those methods can be applied, which will satisfy the why the answer is right.
@jmort253 The OP could also opt for the I have done X and it worked well for me route, while i dislike that approach for this answer it would at least show some attempt to conform to community standards. The OP has been here long enough that he should be able to formulate a good answer.
I personally would let that answer slide for someone with a rep < 300. After that I try to help guide the posters to create better answers(like with the op) it is only after that is rejected that I and most of us downvoted. That answer really should have a back it up blurb.
If we want to remove the back it up rule and turn this into a full blown discussion forum so be it but until then we should enforce our standards.
@BenBrocka I did but I was told by our IT shop that they are not going to replace any more of my monitors.

@Chad I think you're not slapping hard enough

Q: What exceptions are there to the 'don't give a salary number first'?

QuinmaAfter reading many blogs and SE questions about giving salary information there seems to be a general rule about not volunteering a salary figure before the company has given their offer. When I speak with phone screens (not actual interview yet) I am always asked about salary information and I ...

How is that question different from :

Q: Does the first person to mention a number in a salary negotiation lose?

NickCWhen talking about salary negotiation (or any negotiation), it's become somewhat of a conventional wisdom that "the first to give a number loses" (example one, example two). Is this true? Here are some special cases that I think call this advice into question: What about large employers who h...

in any meaningful way

@Chad not that I'm aware of
@SpikyBlue flux is awesome. I can't use my laptop at night without it now

@enderland I voted to close dup. I dont think we should open the door to "I know there is question X but does anyone else have a different answer?" questions

yah

@enderland I kinda hate it. I set the transition time to super long and I can still totally tell when it shifts colors
Plus it doesn't change the color of your mouse cursor, which looks super blue at night

@BenBrocka eh, I've used it for several years now
it's SO obvious how much eye strain I have on white backgrounds when Idisable it for a movie or something (or forget, watched the entire Book of Eli movie with it ON the other night and NO ONE NOTICED LMAO)

Q: Am I entitled to join a company if I have accepted a job offer from them?

botI am serving my notice period with my current employer as I received a job offer from a very good consulting firm some weeks back. The firm asked me to send them a signed copy of the offer letter as an indication of my acceptance of the offer. They also sent a few documents that talked about the ...

this is 100% a "no, but check a lawyer" right?

1:26 PM
I dunno, check with a lawyer
Interview protips

wow

@enderland You do not need a lawyer to tell you that.

@Chad ???

He is not asking can he sue them. He is asking if the company is required to hire him with an offer letter. The answer is just NO(provided he is in the US)

@Chad I think it's the other way around
@enderland I am not worried about the legal entitlements of the company cancelling the offer as much as the legal entitlements of me cancelling on them. — bot 2 mins ago

1:36 PM
@enderland That is a different question entirely

@Chad hey I didn't write hte question!

@enderland I updated my answer on that
Unless you have a contract employment in the US is at will. Any recourse us monetary unless you have a contract that states otherwise. And pretty much only Unions or Government employees get those

ugh this guy is basically saying "I accepted a job I don't actually want can I cancel"

mcbuddyI currently work as Web Quality Assurance or Software developer in Test and has responsible to write automated script test, create test case, and as well manual test. bad question wednesday apparently

I do not understand the off topic votes for the entitled question

@enderland forever doomed to be called Workspace

I am tempted to vote NRQ on the Entitled question but it would just close off topic which I do not want to do

Q: Did I Make a mistake by sharing my salary to my future employer?

kkpI am planning to leave my current job and therefore I have interviewed with a company a couple of days back. At the end of the day of my interview, during a discussion with HR of the company, I unexpectedly answered her question about my current salary. I gave honestly correct figure of my salary...

But this one is not getting close votes /facepalm

Q: How much time should a consultant bill for waking up at 3:00 am and doing 5 or 10 minutes of work?

NealWaltersRecently, I've been doing a lot of production support that requires off-hour work. Recently, I've been asked a couple of times to get up at 3:00 am and check the status of our data, which only takes 5 or 10 minutes of work (and 10 minutes for my eyes to get used to the bright light on the monitor...

This one is the definition of about your specific job not the general workplace

2:53 PM
@Chad right, I voted the wrong one on that in retrospect b/c it was a legal question more or less previously

I am so effing tired of people saying it is ok to lie and steal from your employers
2
And then say its not stealing or wrong because its happening all over

@Chad hah me too

3:16 PM
@Chad Honestly you should steal from your competitors, that way you kill two birds with one stone, right?

@BenBrocka "honestly" <--- I see what you did there :)

Q: Reduce Character Limit for Bounty Custom Text

enderlandI am suggesting dramatically lowering the custom text characters allowed in any bounty from 3000 to the length of a comment (600). The reasons for this is as follows: There are no no paragraph breaks in bounty texts There is only limited markdown available That many characters in a single para...

lol, best bounty reason ever? hahah

3:39 PM
@Chad agreed. The amount of times i see people justify it with 'everyone does it' is astounding

@enderland To be honest my current job didn't pay that much 80% of my income goes to cover rent and bills, that is one reason why I have to keep this job. I also wonder if I change my job to other part-job with bigger income such as waiter is better for me or not. Consider in my resume it doesn't look good but I can have more time to study instead — mcbuddy 47 secs ago
what kind of web developer makes LESS than a waiter :s

What is the obnoxious song?

@enderland someone who is in 'Web Quality Assurance' rather than a web developer
and he is an intern
oops, Was an intern, not anymore

they promoted me to be full-time and raise my salary

but still hasnt graduated
pay is lower when you have few marketable skills
haha chad, you self censor yourself too much :P

3:45 PM
It is due to the lack of filter between my head and my fingertips

i dont have one of those either

Actually that is not true... I have the filter I just choose to bypass it :p

but then im not afraid of people knowing my opinions so it doesnt bother me too much

@Chad did you really have a job cancelled on you a day before you were to start recently?

Not recently
happened right at the .com crash

3:46 PM
lies i did

err 2003ish

um
enderland
whats that?
also @enderland
I asked already seems like they want me to stay as is. There is a opening position for Dev role but they want someone has more experience. – mcbuddy 16 mins ago

but yes I really left my job in Florida for one in Tennessee only to lose it 2 days after I signed a year lease on my apartment :p

might be a good candidate to link to your question about career furthering

3:48 PM
@SpikyBlue That is manager speak for we dont think you would do a good enough job there.

he wants to further his career, they say nope. seems like a good candidate to me xD but yeah thats pretty much what they mean
Welcome to The Workspace - please make sure you have you read the FAQ here! – enderland 1 hour ago

@SpikyBlue answer to @Chad's question about what song

@enderland when did we become the work space

@enderland Ahh lol

@SpikyBlue oh. meh

I like the tile the Workspace better :p
Our tag line - A place for whiney babies that want to quit their job, slap their boss, throw tantrums, and steal because everyone else is doing it. With no Effing unicorns!

@Chad dammnit chad you promised tantrum wouldnt become a thing!

@Chad Also unicorns

I have decided Effing will be my new thing because i am so 2007

@Chad Racist

3:54 PM
I've decided. I'm going to mars

@SpikyBlue Can I go too?

The original was so much better than the remake

i couldnt even get through 5 minutes of the remake

@SpikyBlue Forget it I played Call of Duty with that robert and he is a Douche!
I am not going to Mars with him

...Robert?

lol the pictures of the other people signed up

@Chad you played cod with him? No wonder you dislike him, he clearly slept with your mother. You noob.
not everyone gets to go though :P

@enderland Gentlemen you can't chat here, this is the chatroom!

3:59 PM
@BenBrocka I'm glad someone understands me.... :-)

This is the water cooler, were clearly slacking off whilst looking like were networking

@SpikyBlue I have shut of the voice chat in COD because if I hear someone say no way N#@#R one more time my brain is gonna rot

I think an interesting stat would be "what percentage of one's day does one spend on SE sites"

far too much...

@enderland Why do you want to kill my buzz? Really why?

4:00 PM
he doesnt like that he cant join in with our fun time chat

Q: Developer bootcamp equal or not equal real-world experience?

mcbuddyIs there anyone have idea by attending developer bootcamps such as DevCamps (http://www.devcamps.org), AppAcademy (http://www.appacademy.io/), etc. can consider real-world experience? Is the company will consider it as education experience? Is there anyone has expereience attend these kind of sch...

hw can we help make this not a garbled mess
I think the core ideas are quite interesting

Ow, the english

shoudl that be closed I guess till it makes sense?
I think he's asking, "are developer bootcamps or other workshops considered real-world experience?"

That's a bit better
@enderland I think it mostly comes down to "are these types of schools worth it", whether they count as real world experience is a sub-question IMO. It could go either way though, it sounds like he's more interested in how it looks to employers than how it'll actually help him be good at things
oh right I forgot to edit the title

seriously considering signing up for that mars thing xD

@BenBrocka yeah, and I think this sort of thing is interesting - I dont know it is necessarly ONLY for software people either
those programs are justwaaay more common I think

4:25 PM
It's almost like a trade school. But they devcamp on a programmer's resume isn't nearly as important as a tradeschool on a plumber's resume, IMO

Hola

(on the other hand I've never hired a plumber so what do I know)

@R11G Hello and welcome!
(again) :)

@enderland thanks. :)

@enderland Hm, should I resume tag that one? It's already got work-experience

4:27 PM
@BenBrocka I probably would, since a VERY natural followup relates to that

@enderland wassup

@enderland Doesnt that belong on programmers?

Having a job is off topic on Programmers
2

@BenBrocka lol, best statement out of context EVER
@R11G not too much, just sending emails... wooo

@SpikyBlue Do you really want to go to mars with Robert?

4:42 PM
@enderland haha lol

@enderland no offends I just new guy here and I never this question on here. I just want people opinion on it. Yes, I read FAQ and I did not see this Q as off-topic Q — mcbuddy 2 mins ago
kill me please

which question?

you can click the the "2 mins ago" and it'll go straight to it :)

ah okay
lol
get the context now.

5:28 PM
@enderland Is he american brain dead or Indian braindead?

@Chad ask your boss

@enderland he threw a tantrum and quit

I said ask, not slap!

Q: How to decline an offer professionally and politely which is accepted once?

BVRI am working for Indian outsourcing organization for 5 years. I got frustrated with the recent situations faced with the management and also not happy with the assignments that I got. Hence decided to leave organisation and searched for other opportunities. I got better opportunity and the new em...

Can any body help me how to convey the negative news to new employer
Please help

@BVR I'm not sure what you are trying to tell the new employer?
are you taking the counter offer and turning down the job offer?

@BVR when you do not show up for your first week that will probably let them know

BVR
@enderland: Yes I have accepted counter offer and I want to tell the bad news professionally and politely
Can I put this question in wp.SE? Is this become good fit for site?

6:01 PM
@BVR do the answers here help at all?

Q: Is it considered rude to turn down a job after initially accepting it?

LeastEarlier today, I was offered a position which I accepted. It is supposed to start in about a month. I feel like I've made a huge mistake. Can I do anything about it without coming off as unappreciative to the company? Is it considered rude or inappropriate to change your mind when you've alre...

@BVR You have a question there and have an answer.
@BVR Is there a way your current company could tell you "I know we said you were going to get to work in the US but that is not happening now" in a way that you are not going to be upset?
@BVR You can do it politely but since you have already accepted the job there is no way to professionally turn it down since the qualification of professionally includes being able to take you at your word.

BVR
Hmmm
Thank u chad

But at the same time, this sort of thing DOES happen
it's not like the company is going to run out of money because you turn down an offer they had previously thought you were doing

@enderland People do cheat on their wives. They just do not do it loyally
@enderland No but he is causing inconvience and dishonor to this company and the person that hired him. That is a bigger deal in Asia than in the US

6:28 PM
no one can answer my StackOverflow questions anymore
only 3 of my last 9 were answered (and one was a silly one which wasn't really related to my actual work)

@enderland If they are not hanging curveballs no one bothers to take a swing
@enderland SO would be a better site if they broke it up in to language specific sites

@Chad no kidding! try using an infrequently used tag
I should really just find a more appropriate forum/list

@enderland Isnt that sad. If you want an answer to a question that hasnt been asked on SO your best bet is a forum :(

@Chad there are no VBA experts on SO

VBA?

6:38 PM
haters gonna hate

What is VBA
you mean VB6?

a weakened version of VB.Net which is part of Office

ahh
So your complaint is that there are no experts of a language designed to be used by amatures to make the life of IT types difficult?

7:35 PM
@kkp: It's a very close cousin. // Besides, I can spare you the suspense. Several Workplace.SE members will insist on 100% honesty because they feel that worker bees owe fealty to a future employer. Other, more experienced, professional Workplace.SE members will tell you that you owe no such fealty to your future employer and that the choice is yours. — Jim G. 40 secs ago

@Chad Hahahahahhahahahahhahahaha I'm definitely that person at my work LOL

Q: How can I get out of meetings?

this is a dup of a question I asked before

8:23 PM
@Chad it's also entirely possible I've become an expert and not realized it due to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect

@enderland You are the extra "Special" Goto guy :)

@Chad fffffffffffffff
I'm actualy writing VBA to write other VBA code now

NO Von Neumann VB! I think the great and powerful Woz warned us of that

@Chad there is no guarantee he is even going, just that he applied
