@YannisRizos I really did not WANT it. I am not bothered by not getting it thus the smile... it means I can be less nice :)
And if the mods think I am going to be nicer to you than I am to the other mods you should probably do a better job than them :p (that was a joke)

Does anyone have any creative ideas for how we can encourage more questions for this site?

4 hours later…
8:57 AM
@BenBrocka Currently not, maybe in a couple of weeks. ;)

@NickC yes

12:28 PM
@NickC Advertise the site to get more users, and don't be so gung-ho to close questions :) I don't want to post questions because I think they'll be closed (or it will take me too long to write one that possibly won't be closed)

1:10 PM
@OweJessen Don't worry too much about a single not-accepted answer, voting's supposed to be the major part of vetting answers anyway

Yes I agree no more closing questions... lets just remove the close button all together that will make this better

Q: What do I need to consider when evaluating a job offer that is out of my preferred career path

John DoeI was working in a software company. My work was to do application programming with a little bit designing websites. I left that job due to some personal reasons. Now I am getting a job in a big software company as compared to the last one. But here I have to do only designing part. I love to wor...

I made edits that might help save this question

@Chad I had suggested the OP about the same edits in my comments.
But i guess, it is going to be very tough to save this question.

The op is a new user and unable to make the edits due to low rep
So I made the edits

Yes, i know.
What you did is good, but i think question needs help in different direction first.

I think the question as is will work with the current rules as I understand them
I also suggested :

BTW: I think this is still a real condition question - as it looks,

Q: How to deal with coworker who promises but does nothing?

hate_coworkerFor the past few months, I have been working with a coworker who, although is smart and hardworking, tends to make me promises which he doesn't live up to. These might be trivial ones like coming early on a particular day, or major ones such as completing his part of the report sooner. A few po...

for reopening

The primary trouble is that OP is filled with Mindset issue.

as it fits the current ruleset as I understand it
@DipanMehta are you suggesting it is a bad thing?
The answer contains relevant information about why the OP wants an answer to his question

I don't know if you call it fit - but we haven't removed the key cancer of the quesion.
Here it is:

but the answer should apply to pretty much any decisiion

` But here I have to do only designing part. I love to work with coding.`

2:10 PM
about accepting a job

Yes, asking as to "How do i appropriately judge whether change of career is good or bad" is a brilliant question.

That is the specific circumstances that prompt asking the question

The specific part he says about "Design" which he thinks is lowly over "coding" speaks volumes of mental bias

If it gets reopened then I will attempt a good answer that will be applicable to both the op's specific circumstance and in general

Since you have already made up your mind that Design is bullshit and coding is great - but i have only got BS - should i take it?
It might be ok to ask - but not worth answering?

2:12 PM
Sometimes you have to do things you do not like
to advance your career

It's not about liking -

Is coding more important that being a tester?

It's about the mental frame of mind that "design is a low level" or deteriorated job -
which may be actually wrong!
That way i can also say " project management is bull shit - because it doesn't involve coding"

the OP does not say he hates it
just that he loves coding...
I can relate very much
he doesnt mind the design part
at least I do not get that impression

earlier he wrote this "But here I have to do only designing part" ... "I love to work with coding"
I have seen many people like this, and in my view such questions arise because they don't start out with curiosity of the new part as opposed to inertia towards leaving old.
So in that sense you cannot truly guide OP himself.
Actually, my honest answer to him will be : "Sometimes life has many new things hidden for us- so don't worry and embrace the change. Learn and enjoy new things and you will see a different world" ....
But as you can make out, it's not that constructive to put such philosophical answer here.

2:20 PM
I like the edit just made to that question. It changed it to be more like "Should I take a job I don't necessarily want just because it will lead me to jobs I do want?"

@normalocity edit of this question has completely gave a re meaning it.

@DipanMehta It's true, but the original question I read was extremely unclear and I couldn't tell what the OP actually wanted

I think OP wasn't really asking whether " Taking a detour (such as design from coding) " is sensible and what are the factors and risk.
He had left his previous job - and is now under pressure so he better pickup a job as soon as possible.
But, looks like what he has is not what was really worth it or what he was looking at it.
So now should I act "choosy" ? or better i would take up rather than repenting later? Should i take it or should i wait? or should i make some other smart deal with them?
That's his real concern.
So @normalocity has completely changed that meaning.
May be we are helping the question - not OP!
@Chad @Rachel, what's your opinion?

@DipanMehta I think it will help the OP make a decision. The op wanted us to make the decision for him so that he could blame us for failure. (Yes i am a cynic)
@DipanMehta But that question will help him answer that question for himself and hopefully help others who find themselves in a similar situation.
@DipanMehta I am very much the same way. I love to dive in and write code. That does not mean I do not like design. I would prefer to code. But while that gives context to the question it could have been formatted as:
I prefer to do something more logical but I have been offered a creative position.
I think normalicity's edit is even better
NM
Should I take the job, even though it's not a perfect match for where I want my career to go? Would it be a good stepping stone? I image (regardless of the programmer-specific duties listed in this question) that people have faced similar dilemas in all industries as they try to navigate their career paths. that is bad
That is too localized to the OP
I give up trying

2:57 PM
OK - let' see if we get to good answers here. That will be key to see if heroic edits work to save questions.
Voted to re-open,

@DipanMehta For precisely that purpose, let's give it a whirl.

3:18 PM
@Chad And I agree with you about reopening the question about coworkers failing to keep up with what they promised to do. I'm interested in answers to that one as well

I think it's okay now...answered actually, tried not to be too software specific

to all, looks like this is one more of the genuine attempt to get best out of question.
I think in situations (of OP) like this, it is natural that one is swung in the Whirlpool of emotions and hence sometime things are written more out of that state-of-mind.
It is natural that some of these questions might be genuinely poor looking; but if they have gotten from real situations, there is always a way to help situation better.

Q: How can we encourage people to find the middle ground?

RarityThere's a problem I've noticed with most questions we close (and some we haven't yet): most of them are either too localized to be useful to more than one person, or they're too broad to be usefully answered. For Too Localized we have questions about specific contracts, which really require lega...

From the votes on the question vs votes on answers/comments I can only assume everyone agrees there's an issue and no one agrees what exactly it is or what to do about it...

Well it was a great question to ask, and definitely one I think we need to answer before the site leaves beta :)

3:36 PM
Hm, I had what was IMO a good question (how do I pursue a deliquient payment for freelance work) but is no longer an issue (they're responded for now), should I ask or what?

We need to do something look at the edit history of this question:

Can anyone tell me what they thought original version of the question was actually about? From my first reading of it (before I made changes) I always thought the question was about the choice of a not-perfectly-matched-job, and not about software at all.

@normalocity That is exactly what I though

Q: Should I take an related-but-not-ideal job with a company in hopes of moving into my ideal job?

John DoeMy last job was doing application programming with a bit of web design for a software company. I left that job, and now have a job offer from a larger software company to do web design. I love application programming and web design is not my ideal job, however the company did say it's possible (...

So what's non-constructive about the question in its current form?

Should I take a job is not constructive or appropriate for the site.

3:44 PM
@normalocity workplace.stackexchange.com/revisions/959/1 will show you the original version of the question

Is it a good idea to take a related, but not ideal job in hopes of moving onto my ideal job?
Is it a good idea is bad subjective by definition

But the question isn't should the OP take the job, the question is about the dilema posed by the potential mismatck.

And can you suggest any questions I could ask the company to help me make this decision?

...at least as I read it, it is.

is asking for a list of questions
both are not constuctive
@normalocity excatly

3:47 PM
okay, but people who answer can address the "Is it a good idea to take a related, but not ideal job in hopes of moving onto my ideal job?" as opposed to the "Can I have a list of questions" portion.
Which it seems the answers are addressing.

@Chad You want a rollback to rev 4 or what?

I think it's fine as is, personally.

I think 3 is the most constructive but I like the title of 4
I would roll back to 3 and change the title to the same as rev 4

I like the question the way it is now. I think it will be the most use to the OP, and is an answerable question

The question needs to be focused on how can the OP determine not what do we think the OP should do

3:50 PM
Lists in themselves are not bad, but questions which ask for a list of answers, each containing one answer, are bad since then its moved from Q&A to a poll

I Think the OP should quit whining... that is a legit answer to the question being asked. but it does not help anyone
@Rachel It is not about what you like
it is about what is a constructive question

@Chad Yes, but why is a question asking for a list not constructive? Because it turns into a poll
Providing the question isn't asked in such a way that the end result is a list of answers, each with one piece of the problem, questions which ask for lists are OK. For example, questions like "what should I ask in X situation" should be fine

@Rachel I do not disagree
but
And can you suggest any questions I could ask the company to help me make this decision? is asking for a list of answers
I know that is not what you intended but that is how it reads
What questions do i need to ask before taking the contract? Is asking for a list answer

@Chad In the context of the question, you shouldn't be getting answers each listing one question to ask though

@Rachel But that is how it reads
and that is how anyone thinking they have a suggestion will take it

3:56 PM
That's the kind of thing I was trying to point out with my meta post about judging a question by what is asked, not how it's asked. Who cares what the actual words are, providing the context of the question is clear and constructive

I am losing faith in this se :(
@Rachel SE Cares

You can't guide a subjective SE site by a set of rules, but rather by a set of guidelines
I was part of Programmers from the start, and trust me, they were WAY off topic and deserved some crackdowns (in fact, I was part of the problem since I didn't understand the purpose of the site)
(although I still disagree with the extent the crackdowns happened)
Workplace.SE hasn't degenerated to that

Well stated. I'll reiterate that there are plenty of discussion forums on this subject. We are here to create something better; to solve the problems prevalent in most open discussion forums -- Not to duplicate them. If you cannot forgo the discussions covered under "Not Constructive" and Good Subjective, Bad Subjective, there's no reason to have this site. I think calls to "relax the Q&A format requirements" would be a death knell to this site. — Robert Cartaino yesterday
Do you get that?

@Chad I'm not sure what part of that I should be looking at

@Rachel If you cannot forgo the discussions covered under "Not Constructive" and Good Subjective, Bad Subjective, there's no reason to have this site
@Rachel I think calls to "relax the Q&A format requirements" would be a death knell to this site.

3:59 PM
I'm still not sure how that applies to the question being asked though

that is the 3rd time that has been said in 3 weeks
by the guy that is incharge of deciding our fate
You can't guide a subjective SE site by a set of rules, but rather by a set of guidelines = calls to "relax the Q&A format requirements"

I agree with him though
I'm not asking to relax the SE Q&A format. The question is still a question which asks for an answer. It's not a question which is asking for a list of answers

That is excactly what you are saying

Hrrm perhaps I phrased it badly then

And read good subjective bad subjective

4:01 PM
All subjective questions should follow the good subjective/bad subjective guidelines

that is the biggest problem here

(I've read good subjective/bad subjective a number of times)

you do not

but they're guidelines, not rules

is it good or bad questions are bad subjective
@Rachel no they are rules
Bad subjective questions are not allowed
period
that is not a guideline it is a rule
end of sentence

4:03 PM
bad subjective questions:
search for reasons behind an answer, not just want an answer
usually do not have one-line answers
are objective, fair, and impartial
invite experiences over opinions
insist that opinions be backed up
are more than just mindless fun

@Chad except that the interpretation of what is subjective is relative to the person making the interpretation. Hence, whether you call it a "rule" or not, it's a community, and there's can't realistically be one "true" interpretation of the guidelines; only a series of examples that we learn from.

The list is even prefixed with "Guidelines for Great Subjective Questions"

is it good or bad to do X is always bad subjective

But "Is it good or bad to do X, and why" is good subjective

NO
Why should I do X is good subjective
Why should I not do X is good subjective
What does knowing if something is good or bad solve?

4:07 PM
It helps you make an informed decision on if you want to to do X or not

No it does not
It tells you my opinion of that
nothing else

And "Why should I do X" isn't an opinion? If it's an expert opinion based on real-life experience, or verifiable facts, what's the difference?

Isn't that what subjective means? It refers to the subject's personal beliefs, opinions, perspective, etc

It is asking for the reasons not what you think about doing x

as opposed to objective, where are you talking about an object and there is a clear right/wrong answer

4:09 PM
that is the difference
I can give you good reasons for committing murder. That does not mean I agree with it and is irrelevant to the question

I think we lost the subject of our discussion entirely.... if a question which asks for some questions to ask a potential employer is constructive or not
I respect your opinion on the matter, however I do not share it. I'm not looking to change your opinion, and only want whats best for the site :)

That is not what asked
you asked if there were any questions that could be asked
that is asking for a list of answers
what you say mattters
how you say it matters

But if we want a successful, volunteer-run Q&A site, we have to deal with some users who ask sub-standard questions, and only know that the site is for asking questions and getting answers
If you expect every question asker to know how to write a good question, and how to phrase it well, then it will be a very small site and answer-givers will leave
Now if these users were paying for our services, we could require them to write questions in a specific format

I think we can let this one go. It's not going to seal the fate of the site. If, in six months, we go through the site and start cleaning up a bunch of questions that (in hind sight) aren't a good fit, and this question gets re-closed, so be it. I think we're debating around and around, and no one is going to change their opinion (which is totally fine). Perhaps time will clarify the direction we should take.

But we're volunteers, we do this to help people
@normalocity I agree :)

4:14 PM
@Chad and I complete see, and can respect your opinion, Chad. It's clear from your fire that you care. I don't think this needs to ruin your faith in this SE. :) If, with time and more examples, it becomes clear that you're right and we're wrong, I'll be happy to change my point of view.

@Rachel calls to "relax the Q&A format requirements"

@Chad I won't even mind if you say, "I told you so!"

@normalocity There will be no where to say it at though
@Rachel Skeptics... they do not tolarate substandard questions

I can appreciate the concern over the perceived slippery slope. I just know that we're actually on a slippery slope. If we do get there we have the power to close questions, and things are still okay. This isn't going to seal our fate.
*I don't know that we're actually on a slippery slope *today, at this moment.

Ask robert if he thinks we are
Though I doubt you will get an answer to that question

4:19 PM
Can I buy you a beer sometime, Chad? :)
I mean, you're in Peoria, IL and I'm in the Chicago area. Maybe I can drive down and we can hash it out over lunch some weekend.
We'll record the conversation and turn it into a blog post.
:P

@Chad Don't go, it's a trap! :)
I'm sure he really wants to abduct you, force you to tell him your SE login info, then post slanderous things in your name

haha

I am good for a beer :)

Awesome, and I'm completely serious, so let's pick a weekend/Saturday.

@Rachel as long as he does in philosphy i am ok with that :p

4:25 PM
We meet: "So, Chad, can you login to workplace.SE, and show me what you're talking about?" I bonk Chad over the head, take his laptop with active login session, and the rest is history.
"Now I control two powerful workplace accounts! I cannot be stopped! Mwahaha!"
Saturday, May 19th? Lunch time (noon-ish)?
@Chad you still there?

@normalocity - thanks for editing my answer!
BTW: i think you can make out the question is now out of -NC definition; because people are not flooding with Yes of course versions of the answer... FLOOD == NOT CONSTRUCTIVE. and the corollary is also true :)

4:43 PM
@DipanMehta - sure thing, I hope I didn't alter the intent of your answer.

No no. It was better put.

@normalocity No I was doing work :p

Workplace.SE is a great competitor to real workplaces! tending to lose a lot of time here.

@DipanMehta I do it between tasks

I've never actually looked around on Skeptics.SE before.... very interesting site. It's kind of like a text-version of Mythbusters :)

Should we have a meta question about what's going in the FAQ? Or more specifically, what is on-topic and what's off-topic?

Why

Or perhaps one already exists and I don't know of it
To have a central location to figure out the exact site scope

we will just ignore it and the OP will just choose the answer they want even though its a -3

We can add to it as the meta questions warrent

4:55 PM
@Rachel We had one in area 51

No, I mean a list of what will be on/off topic for workplace.SE. For example, I never thought about the fact questions about which job to choose should be off-topic
Hrrm I'll have to search area51 later then
@Chad And do I sense a bit of bitterness here? :) If you can post a better answer to that post (it's not really a question) I'd like that. But if my options are either a negative answer I mostly agree with, or a positive answer which doesn't address the question, I want the negative answer to be the top one on the list so it's read first

I gotta walk away for a few hours. @chad - if you want to take me up on the beer/lunch offer, send me an email at jefflunt@gmail.com

I should probably grab some lunch too, I'm hungry :)

@Rachel If we need one let a mod ask it please
@Rachel It is not off topic it is not constructive
@normalocity If you are ever in Peoria Ill make time.

1 hour later…

So I was just looking around on skeptics, and I love the fact that one of the first lines in their FAQ is a line saying "New users (even users familiar with the StackExchange format) should read our introduction to the site before posting", which points to a meta post welcoming new users and posting more information about stack exchange system and the site
Do you think we could get something similar in our FAQ? (In fact, perhaps all SE FAQs?)
Perhaps that can help us with the issue of new users posting badly worded questions

@Rachel Skeptics has it because they have a very unique format. What's super unique about ours?

I was thinking a friendly introduction to SE and what makes good subjective questions would be nice for new users
Reading a page specifically designed to help new users understand the site seems like a better way to introduce new users to stack exchange than expecting them to read something called "frequently asked questions" to understand the site

1 hour later…
7:21 PM
@Rachel That does not help that much anyway.
Skeptics has active moderators that close quickly
explain the expectations and then either delete or reopen
@Rachel It doesnt answer your question because you asked for somethign that is against the rules. That answer was trying to explain why that was to you.

Q: Why would managers want to keep it top secret that an employee is leaving?

AnonSince I started to work for my first employer, I have seen two employees quit the organization. What surprised me was that news of their exit was broken by team managers' only a week before the actual exit happened. Till then, even the closest of their friends were unaware of the developments. ...

asking for a list of answers....

7:47 PM
@Chad Many subjective questions do not have a single right answer. The "right" answer is based on the situation and the people involved. Best we can do is provide enough information that the OP can make an informed decision
lol wait, someone spammed that as "spam or offensive"? The popup showed up for me in another chat room

It's a tough sell... to tell people (and have them understand) that "your question is perfectly legitimate but not necessarily a good fit for this type of Q&A." That's why education and guiding users with thoughtful comments (and meta posts) is so important. — Robert Cartaino yesterday

Q: Are ceramic heaters more efficient than convection heaters?

CoomieA colleague is trying to tell me that I should pay more and get a ceramic heater rather than a cheap convection room heater because I'll save money on electricity. I have one like this: Sure it's 2kW but with the thermostat it's only on 1/5 of the time. It heats the room in about 15 minutes! ...

see how they handle it Sklivvz and Oddthinking are the main Mods on skeptics

@Chad To give you an example about how bad our questions were on Programmers in the beginning, some of the top questions there were akin to asking here "What's your worst experience with a co-worker?", "What's the worst boss you've ever had to work for?", "What makes a good employee?", "How should I cook dinner at the workplace?"

I was there

Skeptics need to be tough because their scope is about arguable claims, and you don't want anyone and everyone's opinion asking if it's right/wrong on the site

Please refer to the link above... it has not left the page so I hate to add the spam by linking it again

I don't think Workplace.SE needs that quality of question yet

8:15 PM
I going to go cry in a corner somewhere

We're here to help you with your workplace questions, not to debate if a claim is right/wrong
@Chad hug
Don't cry, it's not that bad
We need people from both sides standing out and voicing their opinion so we can find some kind of happy medium that will ultimately be best for the site and the users of the site
Talking with you has certainly altered my viewpoint a bit (but not completely) :)
But I need to get going. Don't stop speaking up about what your opinion is, but also don't stop listening and trying to see things from other people's point of view
Remember, the sites are for the users asking questions, not for the people answering them :)
