10:00 - 19:0019:00 - 22:00

10:45 AM
Let's get ready for the event.
Snacks are on @Dam.

Still 8 hours to go.

Huh?

Isn't it at 15:00 UTC?

Oh, you set it differently in the two rooms!
This is not good.

10:50 AM
Whoa whoa wait.
What the?
I remember setting it to 15:00 . . .

I wonder when StoneyB and snailboat will come...

@Jim can you change the time of an event?

hmm

@DamkerngT. 15:00 and 18:00 UTC are both good times for them. The latter, however, isn't a good time for you.

I don't think so.

10:53 AM
@jimsug Is that a yes, or no?

I don't even think I can do it on my home site... let see.

@jimsug :'(

yeah, I can't even do it in Law chatrooms.

Double :'(

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M It could be okay for a while.
(I might be in a zombie mode today, BTW. :P)

10:58 AM
@DamkerngT. (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ Sorry, I really thought I'd set it for 3:00 p.m.

(^_^)

11:52 AM
@DamkerngT. Please don't tell me we're gonna see "Flesh . . . I want flesh . . . give me delicious flesh!" on the titles.
K, let's start the preparations for the event.

Flesh, flesh, fflesshh...

Hmm, I'm trying to keep it to SE search on ELL and not bring it to SEDE.
(UX stuff)
I remember I read somewhere that we can search for word fragments using the SE search.

What kinds of fragments?

@DamkerngT. "gramma"
So that the results would be grammar and grammaticality and grammatically etc.

Looks like it doesn't work that way, currently.

Q: How can I search for part of a word?

Narawa GamesIf you search for "AAA" in the Stack Exchange search-bar, it'll return results containing "AAA" as a whole word. Is there (or can there) be a way to search for a section of a string. It would be useful if you can search for "-AAA-" and get results containing "AAA" as part of a string, so "AAAAA...

Oh, * works?

yush

It works!

@jimsug Hmm, but that's not the search I'm looking for.

12:01 PM
Ahh... it's going to rain again..
Hooray! StoneyB has arrived!

Q: Help me with my English Gramma

Tajinder PalI am a native speaker I can speak but needs more improved also I live in uk Britsh Indian. I am not good at asking questions I want to lern it so I can learn things better and know more about them. I have a book in English Gramma I can read it and understand it but I can't say it how it's writ...

I read that "Help me with my English grandma"

Interesting uk Britsh Indian.
Wait, we'll fix only the titles, right? or the body text, too?

@DamkerngT. Hurrah! (OMG even this hurrah isn't caught by my nitpicky spell-checker)
@DamkerngT. We should've searched for "title:gramma*" but that doesn't work. :(

Do it from SEDE, then.

I mentioned that because I was thinking that maybe we should fix "uk British Indian" too. (And then realized that I didn't know how to fix it.)

12:05 PM
@DamkerngT. Don't fix closed questions.

Okay.

So when is The Event? I'm available anywhen, but I'm doing other work on the side so I'll be randomly in and out until then.

I worry a little about my internet connection...

It should give you a time in your local time.
Fortunately/unexpectedly, I fell asleep this afternoon after lunch. Perhaps I'm working myself too hard during the week.

12:14 PM
That's what I planned on ... but I saw a little confusion about it upChat

@StoneyB When is it your time?

Right now it's 7:15 am. The Event is slated for 2:00 pm.

That's good setting.
Anyhoo, I should write the rules, maybe, meyhaps, probably.

StoneyB and I are exactly 12 hours apart.

@DamkerngT. So, if you dig down, will you come out at his neighborhood?

12:19 PM
That's a good suggestion. :D

One of my fantasies in childhood was what would happen if someone did this. I was thinking of Earth as 2D, and thinking Earth would fall apart in two slices.

Be careful, or you'll get wet. I'm very close to the confluence of the two biggest rivers in North America.

I think @Dam is waterproof.
Robots there are waterproof since it rains a lot in there.

Too bad that our power system is not waterproof.
I think there must be a leak or a bad wire somewhere in the village.

You can turn on your own lights if they go out, right?
Forget "gramma*". We'll start with correct.

12:23 PM
My devices would still be functioning, but my TV, lights, PCs, internet connection, etc. will be out.

And it seems to be covering a lot of bad titles.
Oh wait. Crud!
@Dam we have a little problem.

Search doesn't enumerate anything.

Huh? It does, doesn't it?

If I tell you you have to take care of 50 questions, how will you know it when you got to the 50th?

12:25 PM
Sort it by time.

I would just put it in a numbered list here.
And then assign everyone a range to work on.

That would be very nice!

> 1. dsfjlak
2. alsdjfkal
3. asdljkfajldks
4. asldkfjasdjkf
...

@jimsug Links don't work in multiline messages.

Grr.
Okay, put it into a Gist, then do the same thing :/

12:27 PM
Hmm, maybe we should try telling you guys to use SEDE after all. Hides

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M You mean the list will not have a number in front of each line?

Now that I think about it, having events in two different times is good.
@DamkerngT. Yes.
@Dam you can participate in the first, and not participate in the second.
Prolly.

You can grab the results in the CSV format and if you have Excel or something you can number the items in the list in Excel.

Sort SEDE results by post ID
assign ranges.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That could work!

12:36 PM
@Snail @Stoney the event in the Cabin is starting in two hours. Don't forget!

Two hours or six and a half hours?

I may invite @TCh, but he's more like a guest.
@StoneyB Both.
The one in ELL's Cabin is in two hours.
You can participate in both, one, or none.

Okay, I'll take a break for a while. Will be back in an hour or so.

1 hour later…
2:02 PM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I'm here - gimme say 100

@StoneyB (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ 100?
Event is starting in 1 hour, but I can give you all you want.

That'll do to start
Or if you wanna wait an hour, that's cool too

Well, do you see the "correct" link?

I see Notes and Tips ... where should I be looking

The first 100 questions are yours!
Hmm, I should take the second hundred.

2:05 PM
Gotcha ... on my way.

@Stoney do you see the pinned message?

I'll do 201-250, inclusive
So page 5 @50/page

@jimsug (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ

I'll get more later.

Guys note the tips.
Don't edit closed stuff. @Stoney @Jim

2:06 PM
Ah, wait
change that search link to closed:no
Do you want me to edit it?

@jimsug No, let it be.

shrug sure :)

This is going to flush the main page. :D

We'll have a better vista of what we're doing.
@DamkerngT. Yes it will. We did warn them. >:)

Lemme try page 3 then.

Q: Is the choice of "heavy" & "restorative" here correct lexically?

user5036 Would you like to eat breakfast? No, last night I eate a lot. I ate spinach as dinner. It was heavy but it is generally a restorative dish; not for those who are in restoration but for an ordinary, normal man like me. I am pretty sure the choicee of the word heavy is correct here. But ...

2:09 PM
@DamkerngT. Page 6 is yours. :)

@Stoney is page 1 and 2, I'm 3 and 4, @Jim is five.

Q: Is "your cooking made me happy" grammatically correct?

user16461 Your cooking made me happy. Is this correct? Can "your cooking" be used as a noun? The more I read it, the more it sounded wierd to me.

^I think I will leave that one like that, because our answers answer that question (Is "..." grammatically correct?)

Wait, hangon. We're changing the question paging by editing titles.
@Dam is likely to collide with some of my titles towards the end. OR rather, I, his.

@jimsug Open in new tab.

2:13 PM
yeah but did Dam have it open in new tab already?

@Stoney @Dam @Jim open in new tab or you'll mess with the sorting!

OK for the sake of consistency, please post your first and last question guys.
@Stoney you too.

Okay, is this one on your page?

Q: Is it grammatically correct to say 'my dog needs walking"? why/why not?

YukatanA student of mine produced the following phrase: 'My dog needs walking' which seemed wrong to me from the point of view of grammar. I doubt that one could actually use it with animate objects. Am I right in thinking so?

2:14 PM
@Stoney @Jim this is my first question:
5
Q: "I will no longer use these tools any more." Is this sentence correct? if not why?

nimaWould you please elaborate your explanations on the reason why the following would be incorrect? I will no longer use these tools any more Thanks in advance

@DamkerngT. nope

This is my last:

Q: is "meet" the correct word in this context?

Marco DinatsoliI tried to translate directly from my native language and the word was meet though I highly doubt it. The sentence is: Patients can meet a doctor by scheduling an appointment or visit the clinic and wait until the doctor is available. Could you help please?

I see. I'll start from there then.

The last question on my list now reads "Is 'is' correctly placed here: “Is X…, and if it is what the reason?” (correct Had to stay in)

PS, my edit summaries are all going to say something like :title cleanup event, see http://meta.ell.stackexchange.com/q/2632/1407 - title OK, body OK, tags OK (obviously the last three parts will not be there if they weren't.

I think I'm gonna vote to close that one^.

hehe
I'd say so

>:D
Poor guy.

Are we editing duplicates?

Ah, I skipped one!
Should we edit them?

@jimsug If it isn't delete worthy, you prolly should.

2:56 PM
kk

There are two kinds of dupes: Good ones and bad ones.
The only reason a dupe exists is 'cause it can be used for search.
So if the dupe is well formed, you should edit it for a better title.

Q: Is ‘mathematics formulas’ correct?

Marcel KorpelI'm reading a book in which I spotted a mistake, I think. The full part of the sentence reads: In mathematics formulas you can use \{ and \} for { and }, […] Shouldn't this be “mathematical formulas”?

Q: help me find if my line of reasoning is correct with words?

(It's my last one, actually.)

Remove help me.

One of the plus sides of this is that I'm getting rid of some "gramma*" as well

> Is my line of reasoning correct with this vocabulary test?
I don't think that makes a good title.

@Dam make it in accordance with his reasoning.

3:40 PM
Lemme see...

Something like
> Do "orthodox" and "stodgy" point to strong bond with traditional ways of doing something?

> "from the perspective of his _____ professional friends who quickly jilted him" -- What are the best two words (choices: squeamish, fickle, staunch, inconstant, orthodox, and stodgy)?
How about that?

Too long, let's boil it down.
> What two words best describe an attitude of tending to 'jilt someone because they didn't follow traditional norms'?
@Dam ^
And BTW that's a nice question.

I think the OP missed the word "jilted".
But your suggestion is good. Let me adapt it a little.

3:50 PM
To me, I think his reasoning was based on "inappropriate"
and "objectionable".
It's not easy to summarize SAT/GRE/GMAT verbal questions.
Ah, I have a solution!
> "stodgy" and "orthodox" vs. "fickle" and "inconstant"

It's better if you add something to that.
> "stodgy" and "orthodox" vs. "fickle" and "inconstant" -- Which best describe blah blah blah?
@Dam BTW two dashes turn automagically into an em-dash in the title.

nods -- I just noticed that.
> "stodgy" and "orthodox" vs. "fickle" and "inconstant" -- Which two words can describe friends who jilted their friend when a viscerally objectionable situation arose better?
LOL -- That isn't really shorter from before. :D
And it's still too long!

@DamkerngT. Put 'jilted . . . arose' in single quotes.
@DamkerngT. Nah nah, it's good. Enough to interest people like TC and scare away crows.

Finally...
1
Q: "stodgy", "orthodox" vs. "fickle", "inconstant" -- Which set fits someone who jilted a friend when a viscerally objectionable situation arose better?

FWIW, the majority of my edits have been from "Is X correct?" to "Can I say X?" or "Can I use [x-feature] (in this context)?"

I'm lucky that I got only one GRE question!

@jimsug The only thing we do is to make title (more) standing-out style.
2
Q: How can I express 'teaching something to myself'?

AracthorI know the verb "to learn". I also know "self-learn" as a noun. But can it be used as a verb? Like I self-learnt something. If not, how could I say I 'learnt' myself something in the past?

Take a look at this one, for example.
The greatest titles of all don't have redundant adverbs. @Jim @Dam

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I think that works for most ELL questions.
In that GRE question, we could use this title instead:
squeamish / fickle / staunch / inconstant / orthodox /stodgy
Which is essentially what the test tests the test taker.
(Besides, perspective, jilt, inappropriate, viscerally objectionable, and establishment.)

> A good title usually has almost all of the unique keywords in your question's body.

nods -- thinking what if we had lots of GRE/GMAT verbal test questions...

And BTW @Snail I was expecting people from ELL show up. No one did. :/ To glory with the chat people!

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M How much did you promote it on meta?

@snailboat Of course you shouldn't. We're trying to stop title:correct from having 904 results, not removing "correct" entirely from titles.
@snailboat How much should I have?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I have no idea.

@snailboat I didn't want to get it featured, since much to my surprise not anyone other than chat regs showed interest in doing it.

But it might just be that non-chatters don't know about it.

Meta's showing me 40 views. That means there are more people who know it.

A-ha, I see your meta post now!

The thing is, we have a bazillion hot meta posts.

Maybe you could ask Maulik to feature this one instead of the FAQ for now, and to re-feature the title FAQ after this project is over.

I got him to feature FAQ after pinging him 10 times.

I'm sure he just didn't want to overstep at first since he's a new moderator.

Maybe, but ELL should encourage meta participation.

Sure.

I agree with that.
