@vzn still trying to get AST from different languages to be compatible. I have read several books including Dragon and newer, but none is sufficient for interoperable AST and the majority of resources omit the actual optimization and executable generation phase.
This seems awkward, because multiple steps of creating parser are repeated in each and every book, some propose to use flex, bison or antlr to be done with, but target executable is mostly unoptimized asembler or JVM code. Sometimes simply use LLVM. The core point is that I am perfectly happy with some restrictions, but really want to include optimisations part myself, because I know the use case (hence DSL), but cannot get any entry point.

@Evil have been very busy "on paper". coding, reading, volleyball, rollerblading, "garden of the gods" tourist attraction, 2 confs, pinball, comiccon, coworker lunch, coworker party, water world water (slide) park. talk on future of moores law. etc
@Evil novelty seeking is at the core of intelligence, the essay proposes its both sufficient + necessary. there are some psychologists/ (neuro/animal) biologists etc et al now considering/ nearly proposing the idea, have now found copious diverse refs backing it up.
@Evil just reading the wikipedia pg, seems like different languages would (inherently) have different ASTs although maybe one could create maps/ mappings between them. are you trying to do some kind of language translation?

@vzn it is far more important than people used to think, the driving force, but it is not sufficient for strategy and game theory insights.
@vzn exactly, thought it would be easier to transpile and then compile than ask several people to use one language. The problem with AST (or map or any representation) crashes with simple assignment. Various languages, like Julia, returns AST, so it was lazy convenient choice.

@Evil what makes you think it is not sufficient? agreed strategizing/ planning is not easy to explain but there are some links established.

I have no problem with scopes or types for that matter, but with dynamic types and in fact, SSA should be sufficient, but when dynamic getters kick in, there is something off.

vzn
doing any fun stuff for the summer?

@vzn attention, exploration and rewards system (shortly force to run) works well in tasks, but when task is sophisticated enough, that you have to delay reward to benefit more, you have to check possibilities and suppress reward system.
@vzn not yet.

vzn
@Evil there is this whole area of ML research now called "sparse rewards", very engaging/ deep stuff, but still wonder myself if its an emergent property.

Quite opposite, yesterday I have started two large projects, unexpectedly. Month ago I thoght I'll go to Canary Islands, but probably have to postpone it.
@vzn same great woman with you?

vzn
@Evil ok hope you get in some fun stuff, you certainly have earned/ deserve it!

@vzn much have changed, three huge project were supposed to start at February, but the didn't. So in fact last months passed in chaos.

vzn
@Evil 15yr! wild stuff huh! how about you

Oh, I did one fun thing. I have created bootable DragonFly BSD. FreeBSD for long time now doesn't work well with bootable devices...

vzn
cool, linux is awesome :)

2:03 AM
@vzn not that long, but stable and awesome.

vzn
great to hear. length is not always the same as quality o_O

@vzn it is the Unix and according to creators the real descendant of BSD ;)
Boy, it was fun. I got to extend working partition live with system running from it. On the other hand, I have to use Windows 10. Decent computer, doesn't break sweat with computation or game, but update... it crashes all resources.
After every update I have to uninstall skype etc. revert permissions and so on.
@vzn quality is high, it is perfect. Also cat is making progress, started to learn how to acquire tap water...
No clue why, though. She gets fresh water twice a day and never drinks it up. Eats wet meals...
@vzn if I think longer, well, my girlfriend doesn't like console text (black screen, white letters), not gonna put it up against her, but it is the biggest quirk she have, so it looks like perfect match overall.
It is funny with tap water, because it evolved. Cat was scared of flowing water (maybe my fault, washed her severak times over years), but started to be so curious that jumps into washbasin and look at the water. One day suddenly jumped in and started licking the water, ignoring the fact she got wet. After that from time to time jumps there and asks for water. Must have connected the dots... because from time to time tried to pull up the tap.
Tap is too massive, and probably teaching to always cut it off after drinking would be a challange, so I started to thing about automatic dossage system like for rabbits. Anyway, vet told me that cats do not drink as much as they need, so it is rare, but better to give water than not. Technically it is drinkable, but I do hestitate, never drink tap water.

@Evil this reminds me of cohorts/ geeks over in Physics who like to play with/ get a big kick out of linux, one young girl heather managed to install ubuntu on a chromebook iirc, kinda wanna try the same trick sometime. also theres a guy doing some pretty hard core ML + NLP enumaris, can introduce you around (others too) sometime if you feel in the mood/ have some time. alas, re lack of liveliness, it seems there are few other active chat rooms, and their activity is down also...
@Evil good to hear its possible for someone! consider yourself very lucky, how many can say that? honestly am wondering these days if mine has a "½-life" o_O
@Evil lol your biggest incompatiblity? :P
@Evil a cat who likes to play with water, that is really amusing. my sig other told me about one of her cats who was afraid of mice. :P

Q: Migrate old question on CS education?

Yuval FilmusIn 2012, a question asked why is it that some professors teach C-style character arrays instead of C++ strings even in C++ classes. Now that Computer Science Educators is online, is it time to migrate this interesting question there, where it belongs?
