I was looking for a source of potential questions, found one, and asked it. Then I recognized a lot of the other questions on this page (and don't bother, they're all gone now :)

I actually found one really good page of questions at scu.edu/ethics/publications/submitted/open-source.html but I can't see how any of them would avoid being closed really quickly as too broad or primarily opinion based

Trevor and I have been trawling for questions and we both hit on the same one ... then I posted a question in meta ... which interestingly is +1 for the Q and -1 for both answers
Anyway I was looking at this as a question "does a lack of strong protection for IP discourage innovation by removing the financial incentive for developing it"
Also, I suspect that right now this site is running on an underpowered VM while its in private Beta. I see lots of lag between things like asking a question and it appearing in the list for example. Makes sense, but that probably explains the small differences in rep that show up between meta and main
> Stack Exchange had approached the OSI about hosting a dedicated "Open Source" discussion forum, recognized by the OSI. The Board would be interested to see MOU and consider funding. Patrick and Leslie to develop MOU.
But what was the Yes | No | Abstain for?
In support of promoting the site? And also, what's an MOU?
It is the Stack Exchange Data Explorer. It allows you to write queries that give statistics about any Stack Exchange Site (apart from private betas...)
(Comment: I'll edit this out if the question sticks. This question is meant to test the boundaries)
The Patent system works on the premise that the community benefits from the information shared, and rewards the innovators by granting them a period to capitalize on it without others grabbing a f...
It's the precursor to a legal agreement usually outlining the terms in general agreement to allow things to proceed while the lawyers wordsmith it and haggle about the commas and periods
Background:
Suppose I am developing an open sourced project. I am at the stage where I need to license my software. After doing research I find out that I live in a place where there is no ported CC license.
My question:
What do I do if the CC license I want to use has not yet been ported in...
But we will never be too closely linked with OSI because we are open source in name only - we cover both free and open source rather than allying with one or the other
Background
Suppose I am working on a piece of open sourced software. Suppose I am unsure whether or not I want to sell it in future versions.
My question:
Would using a permissive license make it easier for me to sell my product in later versions?
If yes, why so?
If no, what could I do to ma...
I agree, I don't like the name of the site as it stands, especially with the way we've changed the scope to include all sorts of different things, most prominently creative commons
I would prefer changing it to something like Open Info.SE
Currently
The current name of this site is "Open Source" the current scope of this site is 80% licensing and maybe 20% open source. The current name does not fully depict what this site answers.
Proposal
The name of Open Source should be changed to Open License. This name better suits the type...

Suppose I have a design for a truck. Simple enough. Possibly in a .CAD file or some such program. I publish this design on my website under a BY-NC-ND licence. Someone on the web finds my design and builds it using wood or a 3d printer. Now we have a phyical object.
My Question:
Now that we ha...

@TrevorClarke If you don't want a meta question to be downvoted, phrase it as a question instead of a statement. Then voting on the answers can indicate which answer people prefer. If the question is phrased as a statement, then people will vote up or down on the question to indicate whether they agree or disagree.
I think at present the attitude is that all the subjects there are on topic if they relate to open source, as long as the question is not bad for another reason (too broad/primarily opinion based...)
@Zizouz212 I don't know, I think there are still other reasons for rejecting a question
I'm not too worried about the number of questions, as we'll have a bigger community once we go public. I'm more concerned about the variety of questions. If they are all too similar it doesn't suggest that a bigger community will help.
During the definition phase, the highest voted example question of this site proposal was:
What's the difference between the MIT and the BSD license?
with 19 upvotes and 1 downvote.
Naturally, someone asked this question. However, it got closed as too broad just two hours after it was aske...
@Martijn I understand your concern, I'm not sure if there can be a steady influx of questions if the scope stays as it is, though I'm hoping that more people joining will mean a broader audience and thus bring in more varied questions.
Differences between Firefox and Iceweasel is a question that isn't directly about open source, but rather about an open source product. This is not exactly included in our scope as it is, but could possibly be a good addition?
It should be noted that this question is entirely different from a hy...

I've been involved with matheducators.stackexchange.com and a little bit with expatriates.stackexchange.com. I've noticed that both had very high activity during private beta and then about half as much activity during public beta (which makes sense, because people are trying to get the site goin...
