@Izzy that doesn't rule out it being declared by a different app and used by GPS HUD
but TBH I think the answer is just that people just paste stuff into their app's manifest until it works

@DanHulme No, certainly not. But honestly: with 30+ apps from different developers requesting a permission called android.permission.* – and not only one, but multiple: Hard to imagine they all accidentally used a wrong prefix etc.
@DanHulme That's what I suspect, yes. But finding a "real official" permission that's not listed in the docs is not a rare case. So before "officially" listing those as "bogus", I want some backing :)

why not just search the source code? it's all on github, and you don't need to understand the code, just to see if it exists or not

@DanHulme Guess what I did. Each of the listed permissions I did a big Google-Fu on (that's how I found out about a bunch of exotic but existing permissions which are not listed in the docs. Or did you know about android.permission.WRITE_TASKS? Not in any doc, but obviously invented by Samsung where I had rather expected a com.sec.* prefix).
With 30+ apps requesting a permission, and not all of them being open source, analyzing existing/accessible source might just show "these open-source ones are just using it but not declaring it". So what does this tell me: a) it's declared by one of the other closed-source apps, b) it's declared by a 3rd party, c) all of them fell for some bogus? I'd be exactly where I am now. And before you ask: I even did that, but only found <uses-permission in those cases.

2:04 PM
I meant the Android source code, actually

I'm after those already for a year, exhausted my resources :) So I wanted to see if our developers might have some clue. My expectation: Some of those perms will be outed as bogus for sure (already happened), maybe a source turns up for a few, and others most likely remain in the dark.
@DanHulme Sure. Included by my Google-Fu I'd say. Plus: see the footer on my permission list for what places I've also checked, a.o. Android Developers,
Maybe I should mention that in my post on SO.

8 hours later…

Document for Full disk encryption (https://source.android.com/security/encryption/index.html#failure) notes:

> But after the framework opens, the device can encounter some errors:
> * Password matches but cannot decrypt data
> * User enters wrong password 30 times
If these errors are not resolved, prompt user to factory wipe:

Has anyone tested thos second limit of 30 maximum attempts? Although it would prompt for factory reset, would it still allow you to continue with further attempts?

At BlackBerry we made our Android phone wipe after 10 attempts, I am not sure about any other devices though

Samsung also appears to allow 10 attempts as maximum, in some of its devices. I'm wondering about stock Android though.

I've been thinking I should get another Nexus to test these things with, but the form factors have sucked the last couple years and I'm not a fan of the increased price

10:04 PM
What size do you prefer?

About 4.5"

I don't think Google is in mood of launching anything other than a phablet in near future.

Seems like it, yeah
my next phone will probably be one of the Xperia Compact versions
the Z3 compact is 4.6", so pretty close to my old Nexus 4 (4.7")
I don't know of any other small phones that don't have really low-end specs

4.7" is my optimal size, too. But Nexus isn't for me (no SD slot). I'd like something with an "open system", so I've put my eyes on that new WileFox Swift; unfortunately, that comes without NFC and, even worse, without OTG support :(

Hey I was wondering if any one could give me any information about the Blu Life One X (2016) before I order it

10:17 PM
Some of its core specs reminds me of OnePlus One. Sounds like a good find. How much will it cost? It appears to be launched in Sep 2014.

@Firelord which one are you referring to? The WileyFox or that Blu Life? :)

that Wileyfox phone looks pretty good for the price

Launched december 2015
Blu is $149

@Izzy Z3 compact. :P

@MatthewRead Definitely. But my good old LG P880 (2013 model) has a faster quad-core (1.5 GHz) already – though only half as much RAM. And as Wiley ships with Lollipop – I can have the same with my P880 (OmniROM).

10:20 PM
@Firelord My current phone is great (I went all-out on performance specs instead since I couldn't get the size I wanted) so I'll probably be waiting till the Z5 or something :P

I see a lot of bad feed back about the battery on the Blu Life One X (2016), but all phones have bad feed back, just wanted to check in with you guys before wasting money

@DeliriousSyntax It's a bit odd that it's a slow 8-core with only 2GB of RAM. Those extra cores are probably going to be wasted

I recently saw a blog on "phones with most endurable battery time". Stopped reading in the second paragraph, where they listed the top-3 with each allowing for "24h+". Got a LOL attack.

I would add extra ram with an sd card once it's rooted

@Izzy Must have forgotten to mention "24h+ on standby". :P

10:23 PM
@DeliriousSyntax Swap space?

@DeliriousSyntax Huh? Add extra RAM? Not that I know it's possible.

@Izzy I guess swap.

@Firelord ROFL yeah, that was my first thought as well.
@Firelord I guessed that too – but Swap isn't RAM. RAM is faster :)

@Izzy Correct, but that is what folks think swap is -- some kind of magical extra RAM.

10:24 PM
\So it's not the same...
Looks like I'm not the android enthusiast

@DeliriousSyntax Yeah, they're talking about using swap space there. It will help apps that want to use a lot of RAM but they'll be slower and it will degrade your flash storage faster

Same as with virus & co, yeah. On AndroidPIT they today had an article on "how to WATCH YouTube in background". Must be the same as well …

@Izzy Background?

But, back to the Blu Life One X (2016) should I try it? (It will be my for the next year)

@Firelord Well, they probably meant "keep the app playing in background". YT normally stops the video when it's no longer the foreground activity.

10:28 PM
The specs look great for a cheap phone to me, but do Blu phones last? gsmarena.com/blu_life_one_x_%282016%29-7820.php

@DeliriousSyntax The device has a non-removable battery. That seems like a major disadvantage if indeed the battery shows specs but not the efficiency.

Oha. Another show-stopper for adoptable storage (have to add that to the wiki): Micro sd locked internal storage
OP did a factory-reset and now badly needs the data … fat chance I'd say, as the encryption key will be gone with the factory-reset.
But OTOH that was to be expected: factory-reset wipes internal storage. Adopted storage is counted as internal. So what.

@Firelord DO you have a better phone under $150 you can point out to me?

Only difference: without that encryption, one could have used recovery software.

@DeliriousSyntax Don't know. Sorry!

10:33 PM
Looks like I'm gonna try it. If all fails on it I'll go back to my old Razr HD (None of the rocker buttons work on it and Side pannels are all ripped off)
Man I wish the new galaxy note was less than $200

10:52 PM
I think I found another phone gsmarena.com/vodafone_smart_ultra_6-7313.php
But the price is in pounds hmm
moto g looks pretty good.. Grrr too many options

@DeliriousSyntax Follow this resource in entirety and ask a good question there, provided that it would fit there. You might be able to get a good recommendation from that site.

11:08 PM
How quick does this community respond?

I don't know.

I guess I'll be a Beta tester
