the most prestigious high schools in my country are academic schools; they are very competitive. In contrast to them, vocational high schools are far less competetive; some of them can even be entered without any criteria in academic performance. Nevertheless, some students who are academically excellent enough to enter the most prestigious high schools choose to enter some vocational high schools.
why is so?
probably because no matter what kind of school one enters, they have to end up landing on a paid position. Though academic schools are more reputable, if you end up not in a paid position, it will be a trouble.
it's absurd that the most poorly academic performed students, who generally entered vocational schools, generally have less trouble in ending up with a paid position than their better academic performed counterpart.

I'm not from Germany, but if I remember correctly, Germany has, for a long time, been a strong supporter of preparing people well for skilled work in industry. In such a country, some people just follow a preference for such work, rather than academic work.
The same would be true if a skilled musician decided to do some other thing with their life. Their music teachers would lament, but the person should decide how to spend their life. They only have one. The fact that you choose differently is of no concern to them.
