@D.Hutchinson Taipei is a depressing place because it's both mentally and physically deficient. For the mental part, I don't know anybody here who can be talked with my real concerns. For the physical part, I even have no access to a warm shower when living here.

I see @CaptainBohemian :(
@CaptainBohemian have you heard back from PhD programs?

@D.Hutchinson I hate to tell others I live in Taipei because I don't feel Taipei is an interesting place, being just a boring concrete jungle. When I hear others tell me they live in Taipei, I imagine how boring a life they have.

haha @CaptainBohemian

@D.Hutchinson No. I doubt they will reply me.

good luck

1:20 AM
because I have not heard back anything from two programs I applied to earlier.
I have got the feeling these programs don't inform the applicants easily.
now I only applied to a program 7 weeks ago.

7 weeks is early ...
they might just be starting to review applications - or might not even have started yet

Do you think I should take an initiative to send a mail to ask them?
but I think 7 weeks have been very long.

no, not now ... unless you have gotten an offer that you want to use as leverage ...

A program I applied to last May replied me 7 weeks later but they said they would inform the result 6 weeks later.

@D.Hutchinson what do you mean by taking as a leveage? If I have got an offer, why do I still mind if that program wants me or not?

if that program is better, perhaps?
a friend got an offer from a good program in early March, emailed the other top program that he had waited forever for, and the next day, that other program made an offer to him, too
kind of shitty but that's how negotiation works, I guess ...

1:48 AM
@D.Hutchinson but I don't really know which program is a top program in Europe; I feel every program having theoretical physics themes I want to be engaged with is top. Actually I prefer to work on the themes which I am more interested in than a top program if there are really criteria which judge which program is of more top.

I hear ya @CaptainBohemian

2:19 AM
@D.Hutchinson it's not always warm here. It's unusually cold here these several days. It's so cold that I feel want for food whenever I am awake.

do steamed milk-y drinks - that helps me a lot with cold days
hot chocolate
chai latte
hot rice pudding
oatmeal
it's better than like eating a hot dinner ...
the hot milk is key ...

I don't like hot milk. I always drink icy milk if I drink it.

I see :(

I feel sweet drinks usually taste bad if thet are made hot.

I see

2:26 AM
@D.Hutchinson actually no matter how cold it is, there is still shaved ice sold here. But after eating it, I would feel freezing cold. I think it they provide a heater in their shop for me to eat there, I would be very glad to buy it.

2:44 AM
Try the boba there :P

@D.Hutchinson I don't know what boba is.

just look one up on Google :)

how nice if the water company automatically make water from faucet warm when the weather becomes too cold.
washing with the freezing cold water freezes the body, even just washing hands.

Q: Does it cause different interpretations?

exteralvictorin a recent paper I would like to point out one of the previous literature only focuses on a certain region instead of the global circumstances, and here is my original sentence : However, the view of generosity in the world is not incorporated in the whole framework of the paper. Is it bad to be none-desperate in academia? A friend had two offers (lab assist) and told a prof. that he needed to think about the offer, since he had several, and then the prof. said "if you need to think about it, then you're not the right candidate". Is this normal?

@NiclasJonsson wow! I have never had multiple offers requiring consideration which to take.
isn't that too luxurious?

@CaptainBohemian Well, I'm lucky, since I'm in the industry as a programmer so for me, it's pretty ordinary. However, I would say that many people in the industry in my field would say it sounds desperate to say yes to an offer as soon as you are given in. Normally, you would "think" about it for a few days, hence my question!

9:25 PM
@NiclasJonsson Now I understand your point. I have never had any industrial job offer though I have applied to industry when I just graduated and couldn't find an academic position. Academic positions are sorefully scarce so that if I get any offer, it's always the only one at that time. I recall I have ever replied to an offer that I want consider and the boss indeed gave me time to consider, but I knew it's in a great chance that I would take it because I didn't have other offers.
I said I want to consider is not because I don't want to sound desperate but I want to think in more detail if there is any drawback in that job.
sorely scarce

9:51 PM
@NiclasJonsson normal? Academics don't really do normal. I think a lot of us feel that if you are not dying to work with us, then we don't want you. That said most of us also realize that there are sometimes practical issues and people need a chance to think about things.

@StrongBad Indeed, I said yes to my first position offer as a teaching assistant just when the assistant professor called me to tell me they admitted me without spending any time to consider because I was really so desperate that time, but it turned out it's a bad position both in physical environment and social environment. That's why I think I need to consider when I was given the second position.
