@ColleenV I was wondering if I can get your professional opinion on something that is not related to English ...

Q: How to build a stable heavy bag stand for kickboxing?

AIQI am trying to build a heavy bag stand. I am going to place it outside in the car shed (which is open from three sides). I am wondering what is the best way to give it a strong base. The heavy bag will weigh around 200 pounds, and it will swing back and forth in all directions. This is where the ...

@AIQ By positions of authority, I meant mods
Of course, there's some weight to what folks who've been here a long time say
But that's one thing rep can't easily buy, I guess

@AIQ I’m not that kind of engineer :)
@AIQ My husband says 2x4s probably won’t be enough, you should diagonally brace it, and joist hangers to join the boards. You may want to check out roof framing designs.

@ColleenV Haha I was wondering if you ever mentioned you're a black belt or something somewhere

My husband used to box, and he is a maker of things so he’s more qualified than I am
@CowperKettle very cool
@AIQ My husband says, “you need a gusset and a strut” It’s all Greek to me...

11:11 AM
Isn't that typography jargon
I notice "strut" means something everywhere

That’s not to scale - how long the struts need to be is left for the reader
A building supply store should have metal brackets designed to join standard lumber in that pattern

"The factors which affects" is this correct or should it be affect?

@ColleenV Wow ColleenV thanks a lot for this. Super helpful. Please extend my gratitude to your husband. I completely missed the diagonal bracing, and then a 100 other things ...
@kauray "affect"

is factors the subject here?

4:51 PM
@AIQ He’s a little worried you may be picking up too heavy a bag, but he doesn’t know your level of experience
the rule of thumb for regular boxing is half your body weight, but he doesn’t know kick boxing

AIQ
@ColleenV oh ... no I am used to 200lbs. The ones in my gym are 225 lbs. It needs to be heavy so that it doesn't move around too much like a boxing bag ...
but I am considering lowering the weight to somewhere around 180
to prevent the whole thing from coming down on me
but those are really good advice ...
does he still box?

Word of the day: Karen (In 2019, Karen has been defined by dictionary.com as "an entitled, middle-aged white woman".)

@CowperKettle Aww, who hurt the poor fellow's feelings on Twitter
@CowperKettle Yeah this is old news

6:01 PM
@AIQ Not for a while now, which is fine by me. I'd rather have him spending his time in his workshop making me stuff than trading punches in the ring.
There's only so many hours in a day after all.
And he promised me a table for my sewing machine and serger lol

That's truly inspired joinery

@ColleenV wow he fought in the ring? That is my dream ... to be able to one day get in the ring and fight ... with thousands of people watching ... my gym already has fighters who fight in the ring at the amateur level ... and I have sparred with some of them ... still a long way for me to go

@AIQ He was an amateur. He told me he stopped when he realized that he didn't really want to make it to the next level as badly as the guys he was fighting. His opponents were getting younger and he wasn't ;)

AIQ
@ColleenV Ah ... yes ... This is always there in the back of my mind ... going up against 20 year olds in their prime
And from what I have seem ... most fighters in my gym ... they started really early ... and have been doing this for almost 6-7 years
