Q: Use of the word "and" or "or" in a list of objects

CowperKettle Major nonconformity: a significant nonconformity of one or more pharmacovigilance processes that could potentially adversely affect the rights, safety and well-being of patients. Would it be logical to use the word and here despite the fact that each of the listed objects can be affected on...

At a tactical level / at the tactical level - which is better?

4:39 PM
> Version 1.1 of 11.02.2020
> Version 1.1 dated 11.02.2020
Is there any possible difference between the two?

@CowperKettle As a native speaker, it does not feel grammatical to use or when there is more then 2 items in the same sentence.
@CowperKettle No difference. The use of OF isn't correct syntax for dating software releases since they are date specific.

@GWarner Thank you! Very interesting. I should remember it. I've been using or in such sentences all the time.

Basically means the same thing though

@GWarner I don't understand this. Why is it incorrect syntax in relation to software?
We are only saying that this particular version was issued on this particular day.

So, this post got hit by Smoke Detector, and it's got 5 spam flags on it. It's clearly not spam, but I believe Smokey uses spam flags because it doesn't distinguish between "spam" and "rude or abusive".

Poor Smokey
Smokey can't tell shit from Shinola

Anonymous
So now it's at -7, and the author is blocked from asking new questions. One manual flag and it gets zapped. Is that fair for this question, though? I feel like it's not the best question ever, but I don't think it's rude or abusive just because it's got the word shit in it.

@snailcar I wondered if maybe Smokies batteries need to be changed. It did turn to DST
@snai UPVOTE it?

What do you all think about this question?

Anonymous
It's sitting there with 5 flags for me to handle.

4:47 PM
I'm too busy with my translation to think.

Poorly researched, new user.. I gave them the benefit of the doubt anyway. Not spam.

Anonymous
Oh, only 4. One was cleared automatically (by the suggested edit? not sure).

Anonymous
I zapped the flags, and it got rid of the automatic downvotes from the system. Now it's at -2.

@CowperKettle Sorry. the use of OF just seems like poor grammar, since the SW versions are date dependent

I don't understand how date dependence impacts on the use of a preposition
Would dated be a good preposition?

@GWarner In general, we want to keep profanity out of question titles, because those questions could show up in Hot Network Questions across the entire SE network, and there are sites where that could be inappropriate. I think it's okay to leave it in the question body itself, though.

@CowperKettle ys dated is better.. or AS OF to imply a date...

@GWarner Maybe I'll ask a question on the main site about this. I don't get it.

just OF alone seems like broken English to me. let me look at the context again

The version with of is weird.

@CowperKettle As a college 'edu-me-cated' English major, I still have a mental pause over a series of numbers that don't state they are a date. The use of 11 instead of Nov., November, etc. changes that
" the simplest things can be the hardest to explain' (my bio)
I went to Smokie's chat room (Charcoal) anf got lucky there was someone there. They showed me a post about profanity use in posts.. let me go find it.

I like dates in the international standard format, 2020-11-02.

Anonymous
I keep hoping everyone else will start using that all the time.

@snailcar that format makes knowing its a date easy.
@CowperKettle In technical specifications one has to relax proper grammar. But if its conversational it needs to be grammatically correct
@CowperKettle whats the context that the version line appears?
ANd sorry for using ED U ME CATED. it was a jab at having a self taught college education without having gone to college...

Q: What is the policy on quotes with profanity?

RyanAre expletives (cursing, swear words or vulgar language) allowed on SE sites? states No. Expletives are not acceptable behavior on meta or any other Stack Exchange site. If you can't effectively communicate what you need to say without resorting to lowest common denominator cursing, then...

@GWarner Oh, it's a version of a document on pharmacovigilance. Sorry, I'm busy translating it ))

5:13 PM
So its just a footnote in a document? Not part of the discussion.. a header or footer of some sort? Then it's OKAY to use whatever format is comfortable. The shorter the better.
I deal with a lot of correspondence that have those. I barely pay them any mind, unless there is a notice of policy change/ addendum, etc. Then I check to see the Version number is updated when the policy takes place

@GWarner There are two key concepts here:

Anonymous
① The use–mention distinction. To a certain extent, it's okay to mention profanity (talk about profanity), but it's not okay to use profanity (specifically, to attack someone using words).

Anonymous
② Avoiding unnecessary taboo language. If you can ask and answer a question without using taboo language, we should edit it out. That is, if the question is not specifically about the taboo language, we should avoid the extra social burden of sharing that taboo language with others on our site.

Anonymous
Besides those, the network-wide rule is to keep profanity out of question titles so it doesn't show up on sites where it's never allowed. Here on ELL, we do allow taboo language to a certain extent because we recognize that it's important for learns to be able to ask questions about it.

@snailcar Thank you. When I see it I always choose to mask it, even if it's acceptable use in context. Err on the side of caution.

That's fair, and I did see that when I approved your edit.

I think we want to balance the needs of learners posting questions with the sensibilities of the people who are reading the questions. We don't really want to make people more uncomfortable than is really necessary.

@CowperKettle The last question I have is who is the translation for? And is it important they know what the version is. If it is not for the general public then your native format (without use of English) would seem fine.

@snailcar Ugh :/
I would immediately decline those flags, but obviously I'm not you

@M.A.R. Well, I took about five minutes to talk it over in here first.

I don't like to act with a hair trigger because, if I let myself do that, I make some poor decisions.
