hunger haunts again; if there are really nice people here, they would send a meal to me. Obviously there are not.
07:20
most people prefer to help others with intellectual matters than material matters
me too, I prefer to do intellectual work to be paid than paying others to do intellectual work.

Can "solemn event" ever mean something non-sad in English?

@snailboat I think interest is the key to learn anything well. And judging others' intelligence is inevitable for selection committe when choosing who to admit.
10:41
@CowperKettle I don't think it means "sad", just "serious". An occasion where someone cracking a joke would be inappropriate. The coronation of a king or queen would be solemn but not sad.
11:06
Daily idiom: "no-brainer" Updating my resume and looking for a new job was a no-brainer after the new boss announced that he expected us to work on weekends with no overtime.
11:17
@ColleenV Can the launch of a factory/plant be a "solemn event"?
11:48
@CowperKettle I wouldn't think so - you would want people to be excited about the opening and cheering and such
It could be a solemn event if it was a reopening after there was an accident where people died I suppose
or if there was some other reason for it to be very serious

@CaptainBohemian It is. That's why you should actively choose to take an interest in anything you have to learn.
Anonymous
But that's a cognitive skill to be developed as part of learning.
Anonymous
Anyone can learn it.
19:52
What if I don't have an interest in learning how to take an interest in learning?
I suppose I have to take an interest first... in learning how to take an interest in learning how to take an interest in learning.

@userr2684291 Ha. Well, sometimes you just have to do things, whether you want to or not.
@snailboat Being a grownup sucks sometimes.
20:29
Being a high school student the day before a Music history exam sucks, too. But I agree; I would naturally try to suddenly find an interest or appreciation for that stuff, and that helped greatly in sponging for that exam and forgetting everything the moment I'm done writing.

Word of the day: make quick work of
I've heard it in a movie where it was used as a euphemism for "kill".

Speaking of things I don't want to do, I went to the DMV today and renewed my driver's license.
Anonymous
I always say /ˈdraɪv.ərz/, and driver's license looks better than drivers license, so I put an apostrophe in when I write it down.
Anonymous
But here in California, we officially have driver licenses, not driver's licenses.
Anonymous
It just sounds silly to me saying driver license, so I never do. I keep my /z/.
Anonymous
Lots of U.S. states officially have driver licenses. Others have driver's licenses. A few states have operator licenses. But Nebraska has an operators license with no apostrophe.
Anonymous
But wherever I go, I always hear the /z/. I'm sure some people do say driver license because that's what's written, but I can't recall ever hearing it.

Same thing with daylight saving time. Most everyone says daylight savings time, but officially there's no s there. The usage is so well established now that you can surprise people by telling them the other version exists, and surprise them again when you tell them it's the official name.

@userr2684291 I can imagine that, although it's far from the first use that comes to mind when I see the phrase.
