> However, X-rays are relatively basic and can be low-resolution, especially compared to newer, more high-tech modalities. Furthermore, they are uniformly black-and-white in an age of colorimetric 4D imaging. Therefore, X-rays are often relegated as a form of concrete medical diagnosis as opposed to other forms of non-invasive visualization such as PET and MRI.
I don't understand the sentence with 'concrete medical diagnosis'

is a miser educable?
I don't like to teach others English language because English language is illogical.
I really can't explain to others why English is used that way.

8:22 AM
@CowperKettle I don't either. I think they are misusing "relegated" to mean something like "deprecated" or "relegated to a last resort". That, or they are using "concrete" in a very peculiar way.

10:05 AM
@CowperKettle It's poorly written. It's almost always "relegated to" and I agree with Nathan that the author probably meant "deprecated" or something similar. The author has other strange wording throughout the article. It seems like they are trying very hard to achieve an academic tone that is beyond their vocabulary...

@userr2684291 It's also common to use I came to (place) in some other contexts (in addition to @Catija 's I came here this morning and I'm still here example). We can also use it when we are talking about the time we arrived somewhere, or around the time we arrived somewhere, even if we are no longer there, at least in some circumstances. When I came to work last Thursday, my boss called me into a meeting before I even had a chance to sit down at my desk. Went is also natural in that context.
Another example is when we are saying that something changed between a time we arrived somewhere (or joined an organization) and a later time: When she came to the company, there were 8 employees. When she left a year later, there were 30.
It's also natural to say When I came to stay with you after you had the baby, (When I came to your place last year ... ) it was such a fun time. We should do it again this year. We'd say that even if both people were not at the listener's home. But if speaking to a third person, we'd not normally say When I came to visit MAR last year . . .
I'm not sure why. I think it may have something to do with common expressions like "come home" "come to see you".
I suppose that it is for these kinds of special contexts that you might not be sure what's idiomatic.

@CaptainBohemian Every language is illogical, though different languages keep their illogic hiding in different places.

Oh God.
@JimReynolds Thanks, but now I don't have a hard-and-fast rule and I'm lost.
It looks like it's all random and idiomatic in some contexts and not in others, and that discourages me from trying to figure out all the possibilities, because I bet yours aren't the only examples/contexts. Either I'll somehow acquire it (by osmosis) or I won't.
Thank you very much for your explanation; hopefully some of that sticks.

I have hunger trouble again.
Frequent hunger trouble is why I can't afford to read regarding others' issues.

3:14 PM
@CaptainBohemian Have you taken a blood test?
The only sign of kidney failure in mine was eventual loss of appetite
You never know what's wrong with you
And a total checkup actually

3:29 PM
nods
I went for years without insulin, feeling weak.
And several months without thyroxine, feeling weak and limping on one leg.
You've got to try different doctors and take all the blood and other tests you can.

What is an English word or sentence for tribute to xyz after 3 year, i mean 3rd tribute would be ok?

@Pandya Tribute? "Third tribute" would imply that it was the third received, no implication of years, though... "Third year tribute" would be the tribute given in a third year... but I'm still not quite sure what you mean by "tribute".

@Catija Someone asked my help to translate or form English sentence. By tribute, I mean which is given yearly after death, say death anniversary
Homage or commemorate are similar words I find equivalent to tribute
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Hi

5:33 PM
The best doctors are regular food servers.
of course decent food.
every human body itself requires a lot of care.

@Pandya Hi, sorry, the chat kept keeping its doors closed

@snailboat Pullum told me he and Payne think from con man to murderer is yet another special construction (i.e., exception).

I think what they think
What's my prize?

my definition of decent food involves different food, not a specific the same food every time, like what any eatery offer.

@CaptainBohemian My definition of a perfectly healthy body is you at least sometimes enjoy the food you're having

5:43 PM
I don't like any particular food; I just want different food every time I am hungry.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I hereby grant you permission to translate CGEL into Persian.

@userr2684291 :O OMG OMG OMG I'm gonna pass out

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ (For your personal use only.)

Nooooo

5:45 PM
no matter how delicious a food is, if you keep eating it in the same environment for uncountable times, you get tired of it.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Let's go, chop chop!

Go? I just arrived

you wouldn't feel fun of doing the same things in the same enironment for uncountable times.

This argument again

When I used to study in library every day, I changed floors often.
and I always study different material; I would only restudy what I have studied if I forget it.

5:51 PM
Yeah, everyone is like that
But the way you rant about food means either you never enjoy your food or that city's food generally sucks

I only feel a food particularly good if it's new to me.
that usually only occurs when I travel to a different place.

@userr2684291 It reminds me of bare coordination.

Anonymous
@CaptainBohemian You need to study in multiple places to learn effectively.

Anonymous
I like eating the same food every day, by the way.

@snailboat I am so going to confuse these terms with chem terms

7:05 PM
@snailboat Why?
How don't you get bored of it? Also, I recommend studying in the same place, although sometimes when you're stuck, changing the environment can help.
@snailboat CGEL only lists examples like from father to son, and I saw those, and the coordination one at the end is explained away by the fact that it's repetition so I don't think that's the case here. The problem is, most of the NPs there are interpreted as definite, from what I see.
The authors also say no article is permitted, while you can freely say turned from a con man to a killer.
Okay I completely misread that. That's only for one example.
But I think from father to son has an idiomatic meaning while from a father to a son doesn't.

7:24 PM
@userr2684291 when I was a kid, I had done the homework on the stairs in the home apartment, because I just felt doing homework in my room bores me.
When I was a kid, I also felt so bored with seeing the same building every day when looking out the window at home.

@userr2684291 I find variety in food aversive. Since that's not a conscious decision on my part, I can't really explain the reasoning behind it.

Anonymous
And if you look up studies on retention and studying in multiple places, you'll find that you have better recall if you don't always study in the same place.

Anonymous
There are lots of what might be unexpected cognitive effects with regard to location, like the doorway effect.

@snailboat But it's the same taste over and over. Sometimes I'm stuck eating the same food and I eventually stop and can't stand that food anymore.

when I was in elementary school, I also wondered if my classmates sitting next to me would get tired of seeing me every day because they saw me every day. We had to sit in fixed seats every day when in elementary school unless the teacher rearrange seats for us.

7:38 PM
@snailboat I think the problem I've encountered is getting used to the new environment, sounds, etc. I might've misunderstood you as saying you ought to study in new environments all the time, not just different. I guess I don't have 10 rooms in which I do things; I have two, max. And what am I gonna, study in the kitchen?

I always feel very excited when first going to a new environment.
so when I was in elementary school, I always admired my clasmates who transformed school often in contrast to me never transforming school.

And if you're suggesting I should just move around the room... I think I've been doing that unconsciously.
I take my notes with me, sit by the window, or on the bed and read them.

Anonymous
@userr2684291 Well, not everyone studies exclusively at home.

Anonymous
My house is big enough I do have various places to study, though.

Anonymous
But there is a university close by with some good places to study as well. Or to just read.

Anonymous
7:52 PM
@userr2684291 I didn't mean new environments.

Yeah, sorry.
I've never been able to concentrate in the university library for example. There's people and sounds.
And at our national library where you can't make a single noise I'm annoyed because there aren't any sounds and I concentrate on that too much.

Anonymous
@userr2684291 Yep. I'd say "I might just be weird", but I already know I am, so I'm not sure might is really appropriate :-)

I have eaten the same thing every day for the past month.

Plus chicken once.

I need more protein.

7:56 PM
Oh my. I hope you're taking... some supplements or something as well.

Anonymous
Oh, I added a few things here and there. I mean as a baseline.

Anonymous
I didn't eat only those things.

Aha, like pizza and toppings.

Anonymous
I should try to get more variety, but I don't really like to. I have to push myself to do it.

I do keep track of macros, although I don't really keep track of micronutrients.

7:57 PM
But why would you eat anything else if you know that thing tastes so good! Haha.

Anonymous
I take a multivitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

I think you need like half an hour outside to get the sufficient amount of vitamin D.
I've only seen professional gamers taking vitamin D.

Anonymous
Well, I go outside every day, but I don't synthesize enough vitamin D. My doctor makes me take it.

Oh, I see.

Anonymous
I get blood tests weekly, so I'm usually fairly aware of my micronutrient status.

8:00 PM
My main problem tends to be a slight hypokalemia.

Anonymous
I mean, aside from being anemic.

I see.

I tend to have simultaneous iron overload and iron deficiency.

Anonymous
So that's annoying.

Do you have to take these supplements in certain ratios for them to absorb properly? Does it work differently with different foods? Because I think on my box of vitamins it says something like 9000% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin X, which I think is because only a small percent actually absorbs.

Anonymous
8:04 PM
You need to take them at least with fats to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins.

Anonymous
For a lot of vitamins, megadoses just mean your body has to flush out the excess.

Right, I know.
But I'm careful with the first ones anyway.

Anonymous
I don't think taking megadoses of vitamins is a good idea in general, but it seems to usually be fairly harmless.

They're A, E, D and another one I forgot.

Anonymous
I would have to be careful since taking extra vitamin C is not harmless for me, even though for most people it has only minor side effects.

8:06 PM
I see.
When I'm at home I eat plenty of green peppers, getting my C ++'d.

Anonymous
I love peppers. They're one of my favorite foods.

8:22 PM
I love some spices

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ On your pisces?
(They rhyme if you mispronounce them.)

@userr2684291 I don't have that. Where can I buy some?
@userr2684291 I did for fun

Anonymous
Pop quiz: which word do you suppose bices rhymes with?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Take a deep breath and look into the sky, and what you're looking for will reveal itself (not necessarily; I have no idea where that is).
@snailboat Is it French or Italian?

@snailboat every word rhymes with itself

8:29 PM
I feel like it's French and the s isn't pronounced, or maybe the c.

Anonymous
That's interesting. I consider self-rhyme to be no rhyme at all.

@snailboat I'll go with pisces. Am I right?

Anonymous
@userr2684291 I think bices rhymes with spices. They're both regular plurals, /baɪs/ + /ɪz/.

Bice is a pretty uncommon word, but it's common enough to be included in the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary.

Wow, OK, haha
I thought it had to do with bi-

I hadn't heard it until now.

Me neither

I only know it 'cause of Scrabble. :-)

Probably not a useful word for learners. But maybe a fun word :-)
