@snailplane Interesting. I think we'd pretty commonly say Shakespeare's (is) great. I love his plays. So thinking of him existing in a way makes sense. He lives on through his work, as the saying goes.

@JimReynolds Yep, we definitely do talk about authors like that.

But what has Shakespeare done lately? :-)

Q: Why does not everyone accept an answer?

Element115I'm fairly new to StackExchange and this is the first community I've participated heavily in. One thing I can't figure out is why more people don't mark their questions as answered when a thorough answer has been provided. It seems like doing this would prevent those items that keep being bumped ...

@snailplane I'm not arguing that it's noble to the ear to hear that Bill has written many plays, just remarking that it's interesting we talk about him in the present tense commonly, because he exists in some sense, but we don't so commonly use the present perfect with him because he doesn't exist in some sense. As Shakespeare himself wrote: It's an inkling of a sinking of a purple velvet feeling. O.O
And ... can you recommend someone who persuasively argues against Krashenesque acquisition theory? Either one or more academic articles or books?
I have Bill VanPatten on my list of things to read. I've grazed on tidbits of his stuff already. He strikes me as a narcissistic little twerp. But I haven't studied his ideas in much depth yet. I find it ironic that in his videos here teawithbvp.com/resources ... he talks about how communication more than "language" and etc, but he seems to be doing a poor job at explaining what he has to say very well to what I think is the intended audience (non-linguists).
His in-person audience . . . I have the feeling that many of them are not inputting much of what he's saying very comprehensibly!

Q: What is the /iə/?

Noname KunI am confusing with phonetic symbols between /iə/ and /ɪə/. I know that /ɪə/ is a diphthong vowel, combining between /ɪ/ and schwa /ə/. But what is /iə/? Is it /i:/+/ə/? How different are they pronounced?
