Why don't we pronounce the a sound in bulrush and bullfinch?
Anonymous
Hello! :-)
Anonymous
What a sound is that? Bulrush should be /ˈbʊl.rʌʃ/, and bullfinch /ˈbʊl.fɪntʃ/
Yes
When I first memorized a poem with bulrush I recited it as /ˈbʌl.rʌʃ/
> Where will-o'-the-wisps and glow-worms shine,
In bulrush and in brake;
Where waving mosses shroud the pine,
And the cedar grows, and the poisonous vine
Is spotted like the snake;
"Bull rush" sounds odd
"bal rush" sounds better
I hope you're well and fine, Snails. It's quite sunny over here, but frosty. Minus 12 °C
But in just a month's time the snow will start melting
I'll go and ice-skate a bit

Maslenitsa (Russian: Мaсленица, Ukrainian: Масниця, Belarusian: Масленіца; also known as Butter Week, Crepe week, or Cheesefare Week) is an Eastern Slavic religious and folk holiday, celebrated during the last week before Great Lent, that is, the eighth week before Eastern Orthodox Pascha (Easter). Maslenitsa corresponds to the Western Christian Carnival, except that Orthodox Lent begins on a Monday instead of a Wednesday, and the Orthodox date of Easter can differ greatly from the Western Christian date. == Traditions == According to archeological evidence from 2nd century A.D. Maslenitsa may...
The Crepe Week, or Maslenitsa, a week ago ))
We travelled in the forest, cooked some crepes on fire and fooled around
As the culmination of the celebration people gather to "strip Lady Maslenitsa of her finery" and burn her in a bonfire.

@CowperKettle Looks like a good time even with all that snow (brrr - it "warmed up" 11 C here and I'm still freezing lol)
but at least it is raining instead of snowing. I don't have to shovel rain to get out of my driveway :)
