@ᴍᴀsᴛᴇʀᴍɪɴᴅ_ᴇᴅ concern that an orphan tag woul get auto-deleted by system, but if a pending synonym will forestall that, it isn't a huge problem. That meta post was part of creating the synonym, it seemed like a sensible thing as I was also itching to correct the tags per what e.g. football, rugby, cricket like to call their rulesets.
@Nij By "that meta post" you refer to the one about own-goal? Or is there a post on meta about the synonym between laws and rules which I missed?
And if there is not such a post, perhaps posting on meta might be a reasonable idea. It improves the chance that more users notice that the synonym has been suggested and vote on it. Currently the synonym is at score 0.
Some bigger sites have one big thread to discuss tag synonyms - to avoid having too many individual posts. But looking at the number of posts about tag-synonyms, sports.SE is probably not there yet.
@MartinSleziak, ᴍᴀsᴛᴇʀᴍɪɴᴅ_ᴇᴅ linked a separate discussion about using the most up-to-date version of a ruleset, and someone (possibly studro?) made the point that in many sports, they're called laws, not rules. We don't have a separate discussion for the laws/rules one (yet). Possibly we should promote the process of reviewing suggested synonyms as a list instead of specific items?
PSA: Please stop using outdated rules: "This is nitpicking but they're not named Rules, but rather Laws (even though they are the rules of the sport)."
@Nij Well, there is a list of all tag synonyms, but I guess that not many users look there. I suppose that having a post on meta with synonyms is better than the list I linked, since post on meta would have the advantage that users might comment on suggested synonyms.
We will see what other users say about the suggestion to create a meta post for tag synonyms.
Since you are also active at Math.SE, you know that there we have already several editions of Tag management thread. I am not sure to which extent something like that is customary on other sites.
