12:03 AM
Well...it's a man in a jar, saying "oh". A manjaro.

>:(
manjaro os looks like a fake "os" made using Scratch by some 12 year old but it does look nice
it's got all the stuff I want from PiOS
settings app with all the settings
start menu with search and stuff
...actually that's it really q:
@RaspberryPi if you can give me those two things I will be a happy cat
oh and an emoji panel
was about to say a package manager GUI then I realised that PiOS has that already
and finally: good notification system
oh hey TIL manjaro is based off of Arch
well, manjaro is interesting but I like PiOS more at least for the time being
now let's try mint
oh wait, I can't do that b:

7 hours later…
7:24 AM
Heatwave? As if!
More like a coldwave
3 months of a coldwave

Wow... which country?

Australia
It's winter in the southern hemisphere

Or continent at least :)
Ah yes

Australia the country

Europe is HOT at the moment

7:26 AM
What temperature?

I think the UK got to 40 at one point
The highest temperature ever there
In France it is still 30 degrees in the evening
Which means sleeping is off

Now y'all are seeing how it feels down here in the summer :p

Yes! :)

30°C in the evening is standard during summer here

How do you sleep???

7:28 AM
With a fan pointed right at me
On highest speed I can handle too
You get used to it after 20 years

That's what I am doing
It's quite loud :)
I got given one that also makes water mist ..... which makes no difference at all

Water mist never makes a real difference

4 hours later…

2 hours later…
1:03 PM
so today I am going to make a notification daemon for RPiOS
in python
because yes
I've got it receving DBus messages and acting on them
so now what do yall think the notifications should look like?
feel free to make a MS Paint drawing or smth

3 hours later…
4:26 PM
Who has a current temperature over 30 degrees C?

33° here
It'll be 37° a few hours from now

32°C

No beans

its 22°C for me lol

Why do you ask?

4:28 PM
@PyGamer0 :'(

26℃ here

@GingerBot it's too hot here!
@NoHaxJustRadvylf argh!
@TKirishima what time of day?

It's the hottest weather we've had here since 2011, though luckily I don't have to go outside nearly as often as I did then

Do you have air conditioning?

@NoHaxJustRadvylf well you're a TNB mod so

4:36 PM
I only have a fan to blow hot air at me

@graffe Of course, yeah.
@graffe Oh, oof. Somewhere where it doesn't usually get hot, I guess?

@NoHaxJustRadvylf I am very jealous

why the FUꟻ can a Gdk.Display have multiple Gdk.Monitors? that's confusing
to me "display" and "monitor" are synonyms

@NoHaxJustRadvylf South of France. It does often get hot but they think it is normal

Over here I can't even imagine someone not having air conditioning. It's just like, a standard part of every building and vehicle.

4:38 PM
Isn't Europe burning right now?

@NoHaxJustRadvylf the US I am guessing
@GingerBot yep

Specifically Spain?

@graffe Yep, Texas

Also homes don't have air conditioning there

4:38 PM
@GingerBot Spain ⊆ England?

blyat I always get them mixed up

@GingerBot oh my god!

please forgive me Britain

France is burning too

4:40 PM
I went on vacation to London recently, it was very hot and the house (of a friend) we stayed in had no AC so ;-;

but I don't live there, I can only imagine what the residents feel like

@GingerBot that is 100% normal in the UK

So I hear

I don't know any British people with air conditioning. They have it at work

4:40 PM
@graffe good lord

@GingerBot yep

@graffe I'd assume cars over there still have air conditioning, right?

I have no end of cultural comments to make about Britain, but this is not the room for that
@NoHaxJustRadvylf Nope!

@GingerBot they are always welcome :)

4:41 PM
Neither does the Tube

@GingerBot that is for practical reasons. I think the newer lines do

which run in tiny ass little tunnels that barely fit the trains (and also act as echo chambers so it sounds like you're going through the Seventh Layer of Hell every time the cars go around a curve)

@GingerBot sure. They were built a long time ago!
The new Elizabeth line is not like that

I read the Wikipedia article, the history of the Tube is fascinating
wait isn't the Elizabeth line not technically a Tube line?

4:45 PM
but we're getting off topic

That's a whole article? huh
will read later™

@graffe It's around 31° or 32° here at the moment (88°F)

@DLosc what time of day?

Almost noon

4:48 PM
@GingerBot it doesn't seem well updated sadly

it's Wikipedia, why not take a stab at it?

@GingerBot I see they are trying new ideas this year. It's just a really hard engineering problem
@GingerBot sadly lacking in expertise on the topic

But like Radvylf, I am from the US (and not one of the coastal areas like Seattle), so I have air conditioning.

Americans in particular are great ones for cooling

Sigh ....:)
And energy usage I guess

4:49 PM
We don't talk about energy usage

That and Bruno

> Whenever you hear America abused, remember the ice. - Some American, to a visiting British author

I don't get it :(

It's a quote about Americans' fondness for ice

Earlier this year, my apartment's AC was struggling. Got up to 30°C inside once. Since they fixed it, it's only gotten up to 28° or so on the hottest days. I'm sure that doesn't sound impressive to anyone without AC. :P

4:51 PM
Can I have that in Fahrenheit please?

It was 86 inside once. Since fixed, it's only gotten up to 83 (and it was over 100 outside that day).
I'm reading about serial verbs in linguistics, and some of it sounds very similar to Jelly chaining rules :o

@DLosc it doesn't :)

I think there's an inverse relationship between how hot your region's climate is, and how hot you're willing to let your house get. My parents are a lot stricter about not unnecessarily running the air conditioner than most people, and it still never gets above 25°, and at night, 23°
Of course, we've also had rolling blackouts multiple times this summer since everyone's running their giant five ton air conditioners at once :p

What I don't understand is the people who keep their house cooler in the summer than they do in the winter.

Eh, I sort of get it. I absolutely hate when it's hot indoors, but in the winter if it's like, snowing, it's nice for it to be really warm inside.
Alternatively, your house could be built by the absolute cheapest contractors in the world, and its insultation is just a big sheet of paper with "IOU" written on it, and every light switch in the house it 10° different in temperature than everything else, and so in order to maintain the same temperature in rooms on the outside of the house you need the center of it to be colder in summer and warmer in winter
Can't relate

5:05 PM
@NoHaxJustRadvylf That one I could see. I do notice that it feels like a very different temperature in here depending on the outside temperature, even if the inside temperature reading is the same.
But like... it's supposed to be colder in the winter. That's why there are warm clothes, and blankets. Do people actually wear shorts and t-shirts around the house in the winter?

I think people tolerate feeling too warm more in winter

> insultation
That's when the contractor says "Sure, I insulated your house," but it's clear they didn't even try, and so you take that personally.

I'd rather be too cold then too warm
too cold? add jacket
too warm? remove jacket
still too cold? add jacket
still too warm? remove... clothes?
still too cold? add jacket
still too warm? I mean, I think "turn on fan" and "spritz self with water" are missing from that list, but yeah.

you get the point

5:15 PM
Also "lie spread-eagle on floor and don't move," which helps a bit sometimes.

You can always make yourself warmer, but yeah, you really can't make yourself colder without massive inconvenience
(and fans don't work, fight me)

lie in tub of liquid nitrogen
@NoHaxJustRadvylf but you're in Texas and I'm in Ginger's server

@NoHaxJustRadvylf Fans can help if it's too warm but not extremely hot

2 hours later…
7:41 PM
If anyone here's starting a girl band of former genetic engineers, you should call it "The Knockout Mice"

YOU may be a better programmer, but I bless the rains down in AFRICA!

9:27 PM
hey look at this awful code I just wrote
I'm going to put that in OTTNB
def removeNotification(ident):
    global notifications
    print()
    print("Removing notification", ident)
    notifications[ident].destroy()
    notifications.pop(ident)
    # this is the jankiest fucking thing I've ever made but it does work
    nf = notifications.copy()
    notifications = {}
    for notification in nf:
        width, height = nf[notification].get_size()
        x, y = getNotificationLocation()
        nf[notification].move(x - width, y - height)
        notifications[notification] = nf[notification]

If you're going to post random nonsense please do it in OTTNB or the DBA.SE room

and I did

5 messages moved from The Nineteenth Byte
153 messages moved from The Nineteenth Byte

I received an invitation but idk what it is

@TKirishima It's because of the move

9:36 PM
if your messages get moved to a room you're not in

have you ever known SEChat to not be weird?

oh yeah you... didn't actually have any moved messages lmao

. _ .

10:02 PM
why is my mouse covered in goo

yea I don't fukin know

@GingerBot What

@user is it not self-obvious? q:

10:39 PM
did you know that there is no law stopping you from putting an empty comment in your code. you can just. do it.

11:17 PM
so how do yall like my notification design so far?
I'm working on adding a body and actions

11:41 PM
hello lyxal
how do you like my notification

Yes but it needs more cookie

what

🍪

hold please
best I could do
just imagine it's a cookie

Good.

11:44 PM
any other, more serious, feedback? I don't want this to look bad spicy

@emanresuA @user @UnrelatedString @PyGamer0 @steffan is the above cookie satisfactory?

lyxal means notification

@lyxal no

uh oh

@GingerBot no, I mean the cookie

11:46 PM
but I want feedback on the notification design!
should've known the perils of asking you

in Vyxal, Apr 23 at 2:48, by lyxal
We don't take much seriously here at Vyxal, but you best believe we are very serious about cookies.

:/

@GingerBot well there's not much to feedback on - it's a notification, not a whole user interface

but do it look good

Apart from maybe adding dark mode support and an image to show where it's coming from, it's just a header and a body
It's hard to make it not look good

11:53 PM
I'm working on those
@lyxal oh yea? *sets background-color to vomit*

So long as it's not intrusive and it's generally understandable, it doesn't matter

good
thabks

Base it off system notifications from ios/android if you're unsure of aesthetics
Notifications just need to do their job in a way that isn't offensive to the user.
They don't need to win 92.2 beauty pageants a second
Leave that to the rest of the ui to do

where did you get that quote from

The depths of my own originality

11:58 PM
wow
