luna just walked into the room, saw me, and turned around and left
:/

Relateable

from my perspective or her perspective?

I probably would do the same if I was in the same situation as luna

hey
that's not very nice

Well cats do be like that
Emotionless
Cruel
Uncooperative

12:24 AM
but you're not a cat
[citation needed]

> if I was in the same situation as luna

ah
also I may or may not have gotten a robotic cat body to put my markov chains into

The only thing I understand about cats is their dislike of birds

They don't dislike birds. They just like to eat them.

gAH
that's the chat equivalent of a jumpscare

12:27 AM
@forest That's good enough for me

what is

That they like to eat the birds
Birds are not pleasurable objects

suddenly appearing in the middle of a conversation

oh lol

In other news, I've been using grammarly for 127 consecutive weeks

okay...?

Nothing special about that just something I get updated on every week

I currently have 2^10 reputation, this is a glorious moment

TIL Ms Word considers VS Code to be a document in the context of pasting rules
I have my default paste settings to strip all formatting from external programs, but to keep formatting between documents
So copy pasting from things like my Web browser or code editors like Atom or IDLE copies without style

ಠ_ಠ_ಠ

1:05 AM
@allxy but copy pasting from vs code keeps the style
And of course SE sent the edit as a separate message
turns out Github Desktop is also considered a document
oh but now it wants to stop doing it just as I go to make a demonstration screenshot

Do dyadic functions exist in haskell
Or is everything a monad

Monad means something else in Haskell
IIRC Haskell functions take arguments via currying, so I guess technically there would be no binary functions

Hm okay

@des54321 I'm pretty sure this is because tinylisp keeps track of which files have been loaded and doesn't load them again. I added that feature because some library files get loaded by multiple other library files, and if they were actually executed more than once there would be a bunch of errors from trying to define names that were already defined.
Nice idea, tho ^_^
@des54321 I approve of this characterization (with the caveats about not supporting input and so forth)
@des54321 Oh now that sounds evil X^D
@Neil I had an idea that would prevent the double-evaluation problem at the cost of a bit more complexity. It only works if there is lexical scope, but I'm planning to add that to the successor language.

3:18 AM
@des54321 I count 17 removals that make it fail (some of which still output Hello, World! but also output other garbage). You can get it down to 14, I believe, by removing all the trailing parentheses.

GPT-3 just generated a reference out of nowhere
such an article doesn't even seem to exist
But still, GPT-3 is great for writing assignments
man, backticks not auto-formatting as monospace in word is really messing with me
like *text* goes to bold and _text_ goes to italics but `text` just does nothing
and it feels so weird

did pip change its install bar?
did it
it looks colorful now

Widely used for denoting division in anglophone countries, it is no longer in common use in mathematics and its use is "not recommended".[1] In some countries, it can indicate subtraction.
what the hell, why is it not recommended?

> In some countries, it can indicate subtraction.
what

^

why? Just why.

@PyGamer0 because you normally just use fractions, written with a horizontal line
the precedence is much clearer without generally needing brackets

if i could rewire humans' brains i would wipe out operator precedence and enforce right to left precedence.

Any Nim golfers have tips on improving this answer: codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/246337/104836?
Also, I have a 50 rep bounty out to the person who outgolfs this, and I have thought of a way to do so codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/243525/….
So I know it is possible.

@PyGamer0 Yes, because all answers to the Showcase are automatically CW ;)

@Neil The fact that an expression could get evaluated twice:
> (either x y) gets turned into (if x x y) and then evaluated. The only drawback is that x has to be evaluated twice.
With lexical scope, it's possible to define a let macro that creates a temporary local name binding, in which case (either (some expr 1) (some expr 2)) could be turned into (let temp (some expr 1) (if temp temp (some expr 2))) and so (some expr 1) only gets evaluated once.

@Pyautogui FYI, you can use ato.pxeger.com/run?L=nim which will provide a byte counter for you, and you can provide people a link to run your code

@DLosc ah right, my optionally evaluated arguments solves that
the x argument to either is marked as evaluated but the only drawback is that you then have to quote x before returning it
i.e. (defmacro either (x (y)) (if x (list (q q) x) y))

Thanks @pxeger

4:49 PM
wait that probably evaluates both args without short circuiting
yep

Looks like either2 evaluates both args, but either1 doesn't

The bigger problem, though, is that eval inside a macro can't access name bindings in the calling scope. TIO

because either2 sends them both through a function but either1 stays macro-y

Hmm, I tried to send some documents to the trumo tower but it didn't work
I guess he must have some alternative fax

5:08 PM
it should be possible to construct an anonymous function that contains the second argument already and takes the first to bind it but i can't keep track of the parens :P

I think you can do that inline, but as soon as you try to abstract it into a macro, you run into the scoping issues again.
Which is why I want to overhaul the macro system for tinylisp 2.

CMM: In NAND gate challenges, can we join 2 wires to form a 0-NAND OR gate?

5:53 PM
@RadvylfPrograms that sounds like a recipe for failure, I didnt even know you could install minecraft on a chormebook

It worked on my old one, just at like 2 fps
Chrome OS runs on Linux, and newer chromebooks come with a regular old Linux container build-in
So Chrome OS is basically just a wrapper around that Linux container as far as I'm concerned

true
my school chromebook is so locked down by admin restrictions the school put on it that theres really no way to get at the linux underneath

6:09 PM
Yesterday I went to my grandmother's house, and she and her (dead) husband used to work at IBM, and found a bookshelf full of old programming and computer science books
3
A copy of The Art of Computer Programming likely purchased shortly after it was published, a SNOBOL 4 manual, some FORTRAN stuff, and a guide about compiler optimizations that was very clear that it only applied to digital computers
5
@Seggan Maybe we should have a meta question listing the rules for logic gate challenges
2
I tried to do one once but I wasn't sure at all how the I/O, specifics of connecting gates together, etc. was supposed to work
2

@RadvylfPrograms compiler optimization book? id like that lol

But is your computer digital?

hmm i might have an analog computer... lemme check
yeah seems my computer is analog, one of my metal shafts broke yesterday. sorry about that

6:32 PM
@RadvylfPrograms well, it has twenty digits, does that count?

Frickin vacation ruined my consecutive days' count

My school's network detects curl as ExpressVPN 💀

Might've found a self-XSS in my school's garbage web filter lol
Wait...this this actually somewhat serious if it works
Because you can put it in the GET request for a blocked site, and if someone clicks the link then you can run code in that site
You'd need them to leave the tab open then switch to a non-blocked network to be able to take advantage of that though
(Although can still steal cookies and localhost and stuff)

6:55 PM
hmm right

@Seggan, I would say no. To me, I feel like a nand gate challenge should be pure nand, nothing more nothing less. Then again, I have made but one.
