Hmm, what's a good "less common language" for codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/179225/…
@PhiNotPi your own? O_o

@ASCII-only ??? I'm not sure that the O_o is about.
The assignment was to solve a second-order ODE, so as part of that you have to implement a loss function that incorporates the form of the ODE. It's different than the regular "mean sum of squares" because, since the problem is to solve the ODE, you don't have any predetermined expected outputs for the network.

12:54 AM
@PhiNotPi wait, so it outputs an algebraic formula?

@flawr if you get time, wikipedia's rabbit holes on pro wrestling are interesting (specifically how it's quite staged). I started at kayfabe, but the glossary linked at the bottom of that is fascinating

No it produces an approximation to the solution.

note: I have never watched wrestling and am not likely to, but it's reasonably popular here in the US (not sure about CH)

As opposed to me manually solving the ODE, and using my solution to train the network.

@PhiNotPi can you not do that
or even (somehow) use numerical methods to get a solution

1:01 AM
The goal is to use the neural network as said numerical method to get a solution.

i meant to get a reference solution
to compare to for the loss function

No that's cheating.

???
hmm. what's the loss function even supposed to be then

It represents how "good" or "bad" the neural network's approximation is. The goal is to use a deep neural network as a method to find a numerical solution to a differential equation. The differential equation for this project is simple, but in real life they can be extremely complicated and practically impossible to solve in a "symbolic" manner.
Since the neural network is the thing producing the approximate solution to the ODE, you're not allowed to generate a reference solution (numeric or otherwise) as part of the loss function.
Otherwise you would already have the solution to the ODE and there's no point to creating the neural net.

so you're allowed to differentiate it back?
(or rather, that's the only way?)

1:09 AM
It's possible to "take the derivative" of a neural network at a given input value.
If you want to solve the differential equation y''(x) + y(x) = 1, one component of the loss function needs to be something like (n''(x) + n(x) - 1)^2 where n(x) is the neural network.
Because this value is zero when the neural network produces a valid solution. Other components of the loss function need to reflect the desired boundary conditions of the solution.

1:33 AM
ah

1:49 AM
I'm gonna create a game basing on the N-mover challenge but I need some ideas on the rules
I'm thinking that upon capture the numbers should be added or multiplied
i.e. if a 2-mover captured a 5-mover should it become a 7-mover or a 10-mover?

2+5 mover :P
as in a 2-mover and a 5-mover
otherwise if you increase the number, depending on the goal of the game it may be disadvantageous

Also I'm thinking if I should allow capturing the movers of the same side because a 7-mover cannot move and needs to be sacrificed(?) to make it movable again

@ShieruAsakoto obviously this is why they should be multiplied

yeah but because I planned the game be played on a 8x8 board so if they're multiplied by so much then they can't even move

if they're added you have the same problem
then just make it a 2-mover and a 5-mover
optionally, alternating types every turn or something

1:55 AM
Oh I finally get what 2+5 means lmao
I thought it was 2+5=7 and ignored the next line

that's a good idea anyway
sorry for being dumb

hmm. still wondering what would be a good "less common language" for this

@DJMcMayhem Thoughts on my 6 quine answer to the quine suite question and the relevant bounty?

@JoKing jesus christ :|

2:00 AM
I thought that was a several-year-old challenge and it turns out to be a 2019 one

@ShieruAsakoto what was

@ASCII-only The challenge you posted

@ShieruAsakoto you thought that was old? :|

@ASCII-only Yea I thought it was kinda simple so

2:22 AM
@JoKing Sorry, I'm just behind
I haven't been super quick to respond to pings recently

:OOOOOOOOO

3:47 AM
do you think it's possible to do permanently pinned Meta questions, like Sandbox, Standard Loopholes and Standard IO formats?

well sandbox is already as permanently featured as it can be iirc
don't think pinning is a thing, sadly
you could potentially use css tricks to show featured questions at the top of the list though

4:03 AM
@NewMetaPosts It's a bit late for an April fool's joke, isn't it?

:P

4:33 AM
@NewMetaPosts @DJMcMayhem @mods possibly edit this link to the title of the post? for pin purposes

Sure

lmk if you want me to do it if you're øn mobile -- nevermind

I am on mobile, but I already got it :P

@NewMetaPosts In other news, the last digit of Pi has been discovered and pigs can now fly.

Slow down folks — the new design isn't here yet. Expect it in 6–8 weeks.

Q: Output the Missing Character

peterzugerWhen writing a programm 1 missing character can ruin everything, wouldn't it be great if the programm told you what was missing ? @NewMetaPosts Man I really need to get off my ass and get those last 12 rep if I want to experience site analytics before the rep thresholds raise

you could un-downvote a few posts :p

@primo That would require me finding posts edited since I downvoted them
I think mods would complain at me if I edited random posts for the sake of undownvoting them so I could boost rep

11:28 AM
@Pavel I imagine they would
(I wasn't actually serious, in case that wasn't clear)

Q: Worn-tile Scrabble

Expired DataProblem You're stuck in a cabin in the middle of the woods, with only an old scrabble set to entertain yourselves. Upon inspection you see that the scrabble letters are so worn, that only the points for each letter are visible. Nonetheless you decide to play a game. You pull seven letters from...

@Dennis this is a small thing, but I was recently doing this, and they mentioned tio as a place to run q# online, and I was like wow I know that site, and it made me really happy for you :)

:)
@DJMcMayhem When I saw that in my inbox, first thing I did was scroll down to check if Geobits posted it...

@Dennis btw, do you get a lot of non-ppcg traffic, or do you not have any way to tell

1:58 PM
Although speaking of Geobits, I feel like someone should let him now

Damn Malty, going from 92 bytes to 36 in 2 hours. Not bad

lol, its been 2 years since ive golfed.
I can feel the Pyth tricks coming back to me :P

2:16 PM
@Pavel woah just like magic 20 rep appeared

@Maltysen It's impossible to tell what a visitor is using TIO for if they visit the site directly.

makes sense

But based on referrers, I get more visitors from Google than PPCG.

You could try to measure people clicking on the code golf link template vs other permalink templates :D

I despise tracking, so I don't log anything apart from the default httpd settings.
@Pavel The fragment (# and everything that follows) isn't sent to the server.
So I just see a request to tio.run and that's it.

2:20 PM
Ah

but isn't there an ajax request with the code?

POST requests log only the URL, not the content.

oh
what about db requests

That's why passwords over GET are such a good idea. /s
@Maltysen That's easy: I don't have a database.

oh, weren't u gonna start using fancier permalinks?
that actually stored the code
instead of just url encoding it

2:22 PM
I need to reach 20k rep before the redesign.

Not yet done. I want to tie that to the API I'm writing.

@AdmBorkBork Considering that the main reason he's on PPCG is for commercial advertisement...

Looking at the referrers, script kiddies seem to think that I'd eval them. Why would anyone do that?
In PHP, no less. There are two reasons not to do that. :P

Q: Is it a prefix code?

DJMcMayhemIn information theory, a "prefix code" is a dictionary where none of the keys are a prefix of another. In other words, this means that none of the strings starts with any of the other. For example, {"9", "55"} is a prefix code, but {"5", "9", "55"} is not. The biggest advantage of this, is tha...

@DJMcMayhem @Dennis Can you kill off all the comments on this post? I've made it into a community wiki to le people add requests to the post itself, as then I can remove the requests when I award the bounties. This works better than using comments, as they linger and make it hard for me to keep track of what has been bountied, and what needs to be bountied.

Done

@DJMcMayhem Thanks!
Do I get a notification when someone edits my community wiki post?

@Riker thanks:)
something for you: edit: oh no it was deleted source

@Adám I'm not sure

@DJMcMayhem Can you edit my post to check?

3:52 PM
Sure, just give me a minute to get to my computer
@Adám I just edited it. Did that work?

@DJMcMayhem Nope. I guess I'll have to check the post every once in a while. If I didn't make it a CW, others couldn't just edit it, right??

If it was not a CW, others could edit it, but if they have under a certain rep, it will go through a review queue, and if they have under another smaller threshhold, they can't edit it at all.
I forget the exact numbers
(which are apparently changing now as well)

what's the current short url for ppcg rn. i noticed that ppcg.lol doesn't work anymore

There's little point in using a short URL if the domain doesn't stick around, right?
There's probably a bunch of dead ppcg.lol links floating around.

i was thinking more for the typing it into the url bar
cuz im lazy

codegolf.stackexchange.com isn't the first entry when you type "c" in the address bar? Newb. :p

lol
unfortunately, most of my time wasting

You're typing things into the address bar instead of clicking bookmarks? Double newb :P

happens on univeristy computers

Real codegolfers have their cameras set up such that glancing at the monitor the right way brings up the PPCG homepage.

@Doorknob We don't have any plans to change that. :) — Catija ♦ 15 hours ago
not sure if that's supposed to mean that the meta rep requirement will go up to 5 or not...

It's a little ambiguous but I think with the other context clues such as the smiley face that it's clear Catija meant that they won't be altering our current settings

It's pretty clear that Catija means that the 1 rep req for meta won't change
