12:00 AM
(tiny blue underline)

Aw, it's so little

I just came up with an evil idea: insert the link that crashes chrome
Nobody would be able to tell why their browser randomly crashes

There's a link that crashes Chrome? O_o

I actually did that with a regular stealth ping but apparently it was ineffective.

12:02 AM
> Firefox can't find the server at a.

Is that still a thing or did it get fixed?

/me opens Chromium to try

@Doorknob Prepend "Alex" and it should be what you want.

lol the tab crashed in Chromium
why O_o

What is Chromium?

12:04 AM
Like Chrome, but open-sourced (?)
It's the basis of Chrome

Ah, okay.

yes, it's open-source

Nice.
People: Why do you use Safari when you could be using Chrome or Firefox?
Me: Because I don't care.

Every single web developer ever: ಠ_ಠ

@Doorknob so does that link crash chromium when hovering over it?

12:06 AM
no, just the tab

That should be true for Chrome as well since it runs each tab as a separate system process

Well, entering it into the browser bar would crash the whole thing

Even with multiple tabs open?

yes

Brutal

12:07 AM
^ what happens in Chromium

Basically, the cause is a null byte in the URL

^ what happens in Firefox :P

Haha
Same in Safari

It sees %%30%30 and thinks it's safe, then sends it to a part of code that expects a valid URL, but the %%30%30 goes to %00 goes to a null byte.

And then Captain Kirk dies, apparently.
wtf I called him commander

12:10 AM
You apparently aren't much of a Star Wars fan.

I wonder if that's still an issue in latest Chromium. My Chromium is probably terribly out of date.
(If you want to test something on out of date software, you can pretty much count on me.)

Isn't that the one with General Tso?

This bug was found a few weeks ago, and I think it was fixed ASAP.

Probably because everyone on the Internet was like, "Oh hey, look at this! <post>"

Because of how annoying it got once the special character sequence became public.
yeah

12:12 AM
Maybe I should update things...

Yes
It's time to update to a real IDE.
:P

What's an IDE?

It's like vim but it's easier to use

ಠ_ಠ

International Development Enterprises

12:14 AM
Internal Digestion Engine

So basically Notepad.

ಠ_ಠ ಠ_ಠ ಠ_ಠ

I Dig Edamame

Notepad is the NetHack of IDEs.

Hahaha

12:16 AM
Notepad is the Pong of IDEs.

Vim is the Notepad of Linux

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Vim is the TempleOS of IDEs.

Hahahaha

12:20 AM

same

What?

How do you "baleet" somebody?

Come on, this is basic mod knowledge. :P

12:29 AM

I remember when Doorknob was the only mod usually in chat
Things change fast

I remember when chat had, like, 3 messages a day

I remember when chat was frozen for days on end.

Oh yeah that was fun. ^.^

@Calvin'sHobbies Now 4/5 mods are highly active and in chat often.
4/5 PPCG moderators recommend toothpaste

12:36 AM
The 5th knows where his money is coming from.

Haha what?

@AlexA. And yet one of them posts stranger messages than most anyone else ;)

Because dentists make more money off of people getting cavities

@Calvin'sHobbies You call that strange? Pfft. I've seen stranger.

Geobits doesn't count
3

@AlexA. Anyway, I was thinking of making an "Alex challenge" since you hit 10k but I was hoping you'd actually change your avatar for more inspiration

Aw, but I finally found a bird painting I like.
More than this monstrosity ^

That looks like one of those inkblot thingies.

Somebody I know paints her own bird paintings to use as avatars.

@Doorknob A Rorschach Test?

12:44 AM
Rorshahclkwawwaaaaashh, yeah.
(I can never spell that correctly.)

@PhiNotPi Cool! For what sites?

@Doorknob I see a furry blue fork

Wait, apparently she changed her profile to be a selfie.
Nevermind then.

@PhiNotPi Just like mine!

@Doorknob An inkjet printer?

12:46 AM
LOL

I would believe an inkjet printer.

Don't trust their tax advice though.

Or their automatic ink renewal subscription service.

@Doorknob You were great in Beauty and the Beast
(Or was that Alice in Wonderland? Shucks)

I believe he played many roles in both

12:50 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies Are you saying that Doorknob is a beautiful woman or a hairy beast man?

Both.

Beautifully hairy beast woman-man.

A beautiful, hairy, feminine man

My phone just detected a wifi network named "this is not a router"

Haha

12:56 AM
I found a password-protected wifi network once called "no free wifi for you"

It should have been This is not the router you are looking for.

My wifi networks are Integral Domain and Principal Ideal Domain because I made them while I was studying abstract algebra.

For added context, we aren't allowed to put wifi routers in our dorm rooms.

My phone's hotspot is called The Sub-Etha Net. :P

Aren't hotspots the things that dogs get when they lick themselves too much in one spot?

12:57 AM
No, it's the area on the phone that heats up during heavy use.

my network is just "monorail" but the one at home is pretty-fly-for-a-wifi

1:08 AM
@quartata It's another RPG like DND.

1:20 AM
quick question if a programming language can be shown to have a surjective function mapping it to a Turing-complete language, would said programming language also be Turing complete? Is this the same thing as the language being reducible to the Turing-complete one?
(i.e., the commands in language X can be mapped surjectively to BrainF.)

I believe so.

If you can interpret a Turing-complete language in X, then X is also Turing-complete.

Because every possible algorithm in BF would have a corresponding program in language X.

(Same goes if you can convert a program in language X to BF and vice versa.)

Converting X to Bf doesn't mean anything, it's about converting BF to X.

1:22 AM
Yes, that's why I said and vice versa. I suppose being able to convert from X to BF isn't necessarily a requirement.

Thanks you two. Saves the trouble of proving my language is Turing-complete the long way around.

A surjective mapping would mean BF to X is always possible, so it would be Turing-complete.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Like Doorknob mentioned, you could also write a BF interpreter in your language X.

@PhiNotPi And that would also prove it's TC-ness?

yes

@Doorknob Thanks for that tip ^_^ would be a great test run

Q: Make a (software) modem!

Nick TObjective Design a modulator/demodulator pair to accurately transmit data as quickly as possible over simulated plain old telephone service (POTS). Steps Generate some random (/dev/random or the like) data that will take 3-4 seconds to transmit Modulate the data with your modulator to produce...

We should have a "Make a (hardware) modem" challenge.

Like the real-world version of TIS-100

I googled it. My mind exploded three seconds into reading the wikipedia entry.

Does anyone know exactly what chips Wozniak used in the process of his golfing?
It says TTL chips, but there's a ton of those.
If we can figure out the details, we can make a challenge out of it.

1:39 AM
@PhiNotPi I know what I'm doing tomorrow ^_^

The first answer in Symphony! :D The shortest I could come up with, at the moment.

I've been waiting for a challenge to answer in Macaroni for most of the afternoon >_>

Do the hello world challenge, haha

print "Hello, World!"
Too boring. :P

@Doorknob what is unclear?

1:50 AM
I have no idea what the challenge is asking me to do. -_-

I linked the Wikipedia modem page...
basically you need to take some digital data, turn it into analog, then back into digital

> A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device that modulates signals to encode digital information and demodulates signals to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Modems can be used with any means of transmitting analog signals, from light emitting diodes to radio.
What... does that mean? O_o

back in my day...56k, yadda yadda...

@Doorknob Still worth posting :P

@Doorknob Modulation is changing either the frequency or the amplitude of a signal. You can somewhat arbitrarily pick two frequencies/amplitudes to be 0 and 1 respectively. Then you can transmit digital information with analog signals. Modulation is turning the digital into analog (encoding) and demodulation is turning the analog signal back into digital (decoding).

1:55 AM
I would definitely enjoy seeing it on this question. @Doorknob

Incidentally, the two main types of radio stations? AM - amplitude modulation and FM - frequency modulation.

@Doorknob look at/listen to the example notebook

@NickT Doesn't modulating the data to be as dense as possible count as a form of digital compression? (that you disallow) Do you just mean no built-in digital compression algorithms?

@Calvin'sHobbies Digital compression means transmitting fewer bits to transmit the same information
Increasing the density means to transmit bits faster

2:13 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies the point is to make optimum use of the channel which has limited bandwidth

What seems to be missing is an error rate

0
I maybe should relax that if people are transmitting extremely quickly

The testing protocol involves some random noise doesn't it?

yes, but you can fix the seed

So how could the error rate be guaranteed 0?
other than optimizing against a specific seed

2:17 AM
True, the BER will never be exactly 0 given randomness.
1 out of 1000 bits?"

ok

Having to implement ECC probably outside the scope of the challenge
because that tends towards the digital realm again

Q: Golfing Strings in Your Language

@feersum I wasn't, but I'm sure you noticed that ;)

@MartinBüttner I wanted to ask how I'm supposed to use Retina
I couldn't get the chess pawn program to work
I used -s

has there been anything similar: "solve a task with spaces at prime positions in the code"?
it wouldn't be interesting for golfing languages as they can ignore spaces, but maybe the constraint can be twisted a bit
like removing any continous group of spaces in the code should break it

7:46 AM
@MartinBüttner so do you have any idea why I might get 0 for the first test case on that question?

8:33 AM
@feersum Mono or .NET?

.NET

Hm, try using the build from the replace branch instead of master

Q: Password in Proxy Settings gets changed automatically (from cache?)

jrenkI want to change the Proxy Settings on my Macbook Air. But somehow the old password is stored in some kind of cache. When I change the settings and save the changes the password is instantly replaced with the old one. Can I delete this cache where the old settings come from or restrict that it is...

Does anyone have an idea?

@MartinBüttner still not working

Weird, I'll have to look into that later

@jrenk umm, wrong chatroom?

Does anyone know how to skip a target when using make?
I'm unable to google it because 'make' is too common of a word

1:00 PM
I think you can use -W filename, but I may be wrong.

@feersum search 'make out a file'

I read that "make out with a file" at first

creep

That file is so small, I can barely make it out.

I think that is the reason -W is also not making it out

1:05 PM
MTG appears to have slowed down
Now may be a good time to edit some of my older answers that even I can no longer understand

Magic: The Gathering slowing down?

Maybe some more card-drawing instants would help speed it up a bit?

Be honest - did you google "first hundred integers" or write a program to print them or actually type it out?

Typed it. Without using the numpad :)

Seems like it'd be easier without the numpad

If I'd written a program I would've just pasted until post size limit.

it won't be

Hello!

!ollɘH

What do you think of a reverse fizzbuzz challenge?
Meh, apparently existed already
..sort of

Hǝllo¡
Weird. The e and the o sank

1:43 PM
I want to compose a fun challenge

Composing is always a challenge for me. I can play well enough, but I don't know enough theory to write music well.

Then you should stay away from fizzbuzz @sweerpotato

Yes @minxomat
Not fun creating similar challenges just for the heck of it
@Geobits I play drums so I just blob crap on a paper

Percussion notation is, and probably always will be, a complete mystery to me.

whut
I actually switched to drums because it was way easier to read notes

1:48 PM
I really respect (good) drummers. Mainly for the multitasking :) . Been playing the piano for about 8 years...

Well, I pretty much get how it works, but I've never successfully been able to read it at even half-pace.

@minxomat Whaat?

?

I've been playing drums for 8~ years
Reading is harder while playing
I generally memorize the pattern and try to play by ear

That's how I do guitar for the most part.

1:50 PM
Yeah!
Well, some songs you just have to practise

Oh I hate reading sheets. I try to memorize as fast as possible and dismiss the sheets.

Mainly absurd metal patterns

@minxomat What is up with the canadian govmnt and germany?

Meshuggah :<

@flawr They just posted a tourist warning about radical gangs in east germany.
Bad timing...
I mean, it is true, but it's just really bad timing.

1:52 PM
Stuff like that
Bass drum wrecks me

@minxomat Can you give me a link/something? Google was not my friend today.

I can handle the arm part, but haven't found the pattern for the bass drums yet

> Extremist youth gangs are a threat, particularly in some smaller urban areas and in parts of former East Germany. Gang members have been known to harass or attack individuals because of their race or for looking “foreign”.
Article about that: panteres.com/2015/09/30/…

@minxomat thanks!

What's up

1:55 PM
Pondering why I'm bad at drums
:X
Biggest reason is probably lack of practise :~)!

How long have you been playing so far?

Practize?

8 years

9 years

1:56 PM
Well.. sort of

Are you solo or do you do the "band" thing @sweerpotato ?

Active playing maybe 4 years
Solo 100 %
I just want to play hard songs, and when I can't I get pissed off :|

Being pissed off is the best motivation :D

I've been practising Spasm a lot
But this solo kills me completely:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlCepFIiAj0
Better stick to coding

The internet is always a bad thing to compare yourself to.

2:02 PM
I'm offering a 50 rep bounty for anyone who can beat my "Hello, World!" in Symphony :P

Well, I don't necessarily compare myself with anybody - I just get pissed off because my mind know what to do but my body won't follow :|
It's not physically impossible to play the songs
I should make a programming language

@ZachGates Shorter, character-wise? Or number of commands?

I used to play a woodwind instrument and when I had a fast passage I was always told to practice it slowly first and then get progressively quicker. But usually I could never get to the speed I was supposed to play at, until I discovered another technique:

Just practise e.g. the first three notes at full speed, and at every other repetition and one or two notes more, but stay at full speed from the beginning.
This technique is quite tiring/not very exciting but brought me quite a bit faster to my goal.

Yeah, good tip
I usually do something similar

@PhiNotPi Number of commands

2:08 PM
I should unpack my drumkit

I do not know, perhaps you get taught this in some places, but my teachers never told me to do it that way....

I've had three teachers
The first two just told me to play songs and we jammed
The third (real) teacher just told me to practise double snare
"Do this and eventually you'll become fast"

Hmm, whenever I was "close-to-full-speed" for something, I'd play along with a recording. I'd inevitably fail to keep up at some point, and pick it back up on the next measure or so. Eventually the fail points dwindle away.

A metronome can help too.
But really, after a few years playing I did not make any real progress anymore, just perhaps the last year until I had to quit.

@ZachGates There's no stack manipulation commands that I see. (duplicate, rotate, etc.)

2:12 PM
Nope
It was created yesterday, though

Well, that means that it will be a lot easier to prove the shortest program.

Why emphasize "prove"?
It should be pretty easy to beat mine by 1 command
Probably more

With most programming language, proving that a program is the shortest possible is really hard.
But the lack of stack manipulation means that the abstract syntax trees of the program are really simple.
What's the rules for Intermission and the curtains?

during a movie?

@PhiNotPi Curtain Up must be the first line, and Curtain Down must be the last.
"\nIntermission\n\n" separates the Acts (once you output a value, you can't perform another Act without an Intermission)

2:21 PM
I don't see them mentioned in the ReadMe

They are mentioned in the PlayMe instead

What's the rules for where they must be placed?
okay

@PhiNotPi I just added it to the readme
Curtain Up
Symphony No. 6
Symphony No. 30
Symphony in B-flat major
Oboe Concerto in C major
Curtain Down
That outputs an H to the console and exits.
It's the equivalent of print(chr((6 + 30) * 2)) in Python.

Does outputting pop from the stack or look at it?

2:32 PM
@PhiNotPi Pops from the stack. No commands can be executed in an Act after an output command.
There is only ever one item on the stack.

Then it's not really much of a stack.

Maybe it shouldn't be called a stack?

It'll be more of a stack eventually.
I've only spent about 6 hours on it so far

Also, what does this do, from your Hello World.
Symphony No. 27
Symphony in D major
Oboe Concerto in C major

Intermission

Symphony No. 23
Symphony in D major
Symphony No. 16
Oboe Concerto in C major

I'll be back in a bit. Going to Gym.

2:34 PM
Should correspond to the ll but it's two different sequences of commands.

I'll take a look when I get back

oo just thought of a challenge

Now I hope the challenge is related to Human World.

It is!

I've got an idea too, but I am too lazy to write it down.
