Q: Duplicate can be considered as an insult. I think we need to use a better title

CardinalI had asked a question on Oct that you can see here. After months, some one asked the same question whereas received better answers that you can also see it here. I flagged the question as a "possible duplicate" but surprisingly, I saw this is my post that is flagged as a duplicate. I had got a...

I decide to leave this answer alone, not -1 or +1, even though it could look almost correct now. Posting an incorrect answer in an authoritative voice, and continuing to fix it until it gets right according to comments from others shouldn't be encouraged, in my humble opinion. It can give false illusion. It can decrease the chance that the OP can get a good answer in the first place (because people tend to skip answered questions in small communities). And it can affect the quality of our site as a whole. — Damkerng T. 14 mins ago

(Sometime I post meta stuff in comments, too!)

Ugh! *Sometimes

I didn't notice until you pointed it out :-)
It jumped out of the page right when I switched back to this page! :D
Anonymous
Sometimes I wish I could fix stuff like that in comments on ELL.
Anonymous
Ideally I'd proofread my comments more carefully. Well, I try, but I seem to be bad at it. :-)
Me too!

I seem to notice mistakes better the more time has passed since I made them.
Me nine!
I guess it's the same for everyone.
@DamkerngT. I read it "Sometimes".
If I want to proofread anything, I have to wait at least a few hours.
Anonymous
There are actually a number of strategies you can use to better proofread your own text.
Anonymous
13:04
But I seldom employ them on SE :-)
Anonymous
One is waiting, like you said. Another is reading your own text aloud.
Ahh... I rarely use the latter.
Anonymous
It's a very useful trick!
I think so!
I use it a lot.
At least recently.

The most important trick is remembering to proofread at all. It's the hardest trick to pull off ;-)
True that.
All of it except the smiley.

Especially if you wrote an entire paragraph, then changed one little thing. Edits like that are a major source of errors and should prompt you to re-read what you wrote in context.

We should talk more in the Cabin.
That's probably one of the most frequent source of my errors in comments. It happens quite often when I pause a sentence in the middle, switch to find a link or a reference, and continue to finish the sentence.
nods
WE SHOULD!
Talks in the Cabin

Is it a Cabin in the Woods?
Anonymous
I sure hope not! That sounds creepy. Horror movies take place in cabins like those!
No, it's a the in Cabin Woods.

I'm up to ten hats.
Yay!
I have only 5.
But I'm happy with it.
13:12
You've found you hat.
That speaker hat fits you best.
Yes! The app hat!
I'm yet to find mine, I think.
Anonymous
I don't plan on changing my hat for the rest of Winter Bash.
The snails in your avatars must be very happy!
They always have something to eat. :D
Anonymous
I could change my hat though.

Schrodinger's @Snail
How many edible hats do we have this year?
13:15
@DamkerngT. One, unless we know a specimen that feeds on glasses or pyramids.
I wonder what Cerro de Potosi is.
Oh, inedible.
@snailboat didn't onebox (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Anonymous
Oneboxing is bad.
13:17
Hello, are you hearing me good? Over.
Anonymous
It is my personal goal to defeat oneboxing whenever possible :-)

It's complicated.

You should tell your school that your brain's got no more room for kung fu, 'cause you're a master of the ancient art of chabudai-gaeshi.

Q: What if we write a glossary post for linguistic terms we use in tags?

Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.Last time it became evident to everyone that a big problem in choosing what tags and tag names to use is that linguistic terminology is incomprehensible for a lot of ELLs while simple and understandable tag names tend to be more popular among even avid askers. Well, in an attempt to (re-)organiz...

@StackExchange Wow that was fast.

Anyone want to help me with my mission to discredit Stunk & White over on the Dark Side?

A: What’s purportedly wrong with Strunk & White’s “The Elements of Style”?

AraucariaHere then is the list in installments. I'm going to provide you with excerpts from the text itself. Instead of cherry-picking sentences to manipulate them mendaciously for my own purposes, I will give you each mini-section in full before describing what is wrong with it. I start with the passive,...

@Araucaria Upboated for now, I might come back and read all of what's been said there.
It's left in a tab for reading later.
14:31
which is right? "I recommend to visit this" or "I recommend visiting this" ?
@DamkerngT. any idea? ^^^
visiting is better.
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Thanks old bean! I you change your mind after you've read it, let me know and I'll have an edit so you can reverse your vote! :-)
I want to just know if 1st is wrong?
@Pandya It's definitely wrong in UK RP ...
I think it's wrong in AmE as well.

OK. Thanks
No problem.

Q: A plea for better answers from learners and non-native speakers

Damkerng T.This is a potential problem I've observed longer than a year. I asked about this during the recent election, but it was a late post and it didn't get enough votes to be included in the questionnaire. So, it has never been answered, and many may not even have seen it. The problem is anyone can po...
