@Seanny123 Me too. Looking forward to what this discussion will cause :)
@StevenJeuris What will be the game plan? Will you be discussion leader, or could it be smart to prepare it a bit?

@RobinKramer I suggest to follow the meeting agenda in order. Start out by trying to get various viewpoints on the table. Write them up as answers to the posts already in place.
And start with those attending to agree on a decided-on new (or same) scope and name.
So we can at least push forward current (active) consensus of those who attended.
A potential structure would also be to revisit the summaries and see how the majority present feels about those (in order to instigate concrete discussion on past consensus).
So far seems like we might be 7.
Will ping some more not necessarily meta users but active main site users.
@mrt
@OfriRaviv
@YvetteColomb
Given your active background on CogSci, we hope you could join for a discussion this evening in chat.
We are discussing a future direction for the site.

Q: Cognitive Sciences Reboot 2017: Call for action

Robin KramerWelcome (former) CogSci users! Several months ago we gave it another shot: we started a procedure to reboot CogSci to try and finally get us out of Beta. Most of us agree changes need to be made to CogSci to make it work. We have now reached a point where your input is needed to help decide on t...

12:55
@StevenJeuris yes ok, it's 4 am my time, but I can sit up. I have things to do and it will be good to catch up with the site
Is that meta post ^^ the only thing I need to look at @StevenJeuris?
@YvetteColomb For the chat meeting? Yes. :)
ok will do :)
Would be great if you could attend. If not, there will likely be extensive meta follow-up after you can participate in.
that's fine, I don't mind sitting up
Where are you located?
12:58
I put a lot of energy into the site way back and would like to see it suceed
Australia
I've improved a lot since I was last here
Amazing. :) We've all learned a lot I believe since this site started.
yeh, I wasn't well at the time though.
thank God they didn't nuke it
Well, there never really was a risk of it being nuked.
But it has stagnated though. We do need to work on maintaining a more stable user base.
I understand
I'm trying to do that on Pets also
this site has great potential
@StevenJeuris did we lose What?

@YvetteColomb Yes, a couple of month ago he changed his name to Bob (the Builder) and just handed out all his reputation to answers he liked. So that was a couple of thousand rep points distributed
@StevenJeuris Let's follow the "Call for action" post. We should discuss scope and name separately. One does not affect the other really
15:07
@RobinKramer thanks.

Hi folks
I am wondering what is the scope of Confabulation Theory as a research prospect in CogSci
Is it still an active area of research? How widely accepted is it? Why and why not if not?
you'd need to ask a question on the site
this can't really be answered in chat
@YvetteColomb I thought questions on CogSci are allowed only on the main site as opposed to my question which is more of opinion based question expecting an opinion based answer
@LakshmiNarayanan I'm not sure it's opinion based
> Is it still an active area of research?
That's a definite question
what about the widely accepted part?
hm I'm thinking about that
15:40
and also the question on research prospect requires a subjective estimate, doesn't it?
Not really, it can be searched to see if there's much activity
I think it's an interesting question
Let me find something hang on
sorry image link got broken
let me try again
this reminds me a little of that

Q: Are life positions in transactional analysis accurate aides in diagnosing personality disorders?

Yvette ColombEric Berne developed the notion of transactional analysis (TA ) and author of the book "The Games People Play". Thomas A Harris then wrote the book "I'm OK - You're Ok" based on Berne's theory of TA. Tony White expanded on this theory. They produced the following concepts about people's life ...

^ In a nutshell
I think you need to put the pertinent details of it in your question and ask if it's researched and how it is placed with current theory
Put your thinking cap on. If you check out the faq, you will be able to mould it into something that's a good fit for the site
15:45
@YvetteColomb sheds laziness and proceeds to frame a question
@YvetteColomb Are you an Academic?
@LakshmiNarayanan not in cog sci. I did study it a long time ago and it's a personal interest
I study software development now
what about you?
@YvetteColomb Nice, any recommendations for Introductions to the problem Issue Topic of Free Will?
hm, yeh you have to be careful with that one
not to be too philosophical
there is a philosophy se
15:49
@YvetteColomb I am a grad student in CS
@LakshmiNarayanan nice, what languages do you prefer?
@YvetteColomb Thanks, but i'm more interested in it from testable point of view.
there is a free will tag in philosophy
@YvetteColomb For Scientific Computing, I swear by Fortran. For the rest i think Python takes the cake.
have a look at these posts for relevant questions on free will here cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/free-will
@LakshmiNarayanan nice :)
15:51
@YvetteColomb Ah the paucity of it all!
:)
I told you to navigate carefully on here with that topic
;)
@YvetteColomb Haha, yes it is quite the testing waters
well welcome. I hope you enjoy it here
we always welcome new comers who are thoughtful
@YvetteColomb What is your preferred language?
hm I love C and C++ but I program ni C# and java. .Net asp.net/android and xamarin
15:53
@YvetteColomb Well, I'm full of thoughts if that's what you meant ;) kidding aside i have been grappling sloppily with the problem of free will in Gedanken terms whilst trying to stay true to empirical approachability
well I'm sure you can frame a question from that
I need to excuse myself, as I'm trying to get some work done in the wee hours. I will be here, but cannot chat for too long, but will pop in and out
@YvetteColomb Yeah, i will need to sort it out so that it doesn't become speculation and then a question would make sense
@YvetteColomb sure
yes, you seem to know enough about how the sites work and you've been around long enough
just ping me if you need something :)
16:42
I'm early for the meeting, but I just wanted to make sure I didn't get the time wrong accidentally.
No you didn't :) i'm just finishing up some chores around the house. I'll join you in a minute
16:56
I'm back
Woohoo 1 hour countdown!
Oh wow haha, I guess I am at the wrong time. I though 18 GMT would be 19 GMT +1, but apparently I'm +2 due to Summertime :P
cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/17017/… just proved its relevance haha
what time is it at your place?
1pm
I've recently relocated from Japan to Canada
17:02
Wow, that quite the change you made
You moved for a job or studies?
I moved for an internship doing deep learning stuff for the Honda Research Institute in Japan. Wanted to see if I could transition to industry. I kind of can, but also don't enjoy it that much?
Ah okay. Well at least you know right? Does sound cool working for such a company
It was my second internship with them. It reminded me how important it is to me to not work totally solo.
I need a team. Otherwise, I feel quite hopeless quickly.
I understand. Feel the same way (experienced it with my thesis). Just did one thing for over a year, and even though I had coworkers and my professor and stuff, just felt like I was doing stuff alone
So what are you doing in Canada now?
Hi steven and Yvette :)
I'm finishing my thesis now
17:14
When do you expect to finish?
A year from now. And then... Who knows? I think I want to do a PhD, but I'm not sure where.
It depends on my partner and what happens with her life.
I heard holland is always a good option ;)
I'm considering it. There's a dude doing cool biologically plausible cognitive modelling there.
Just unclear on how the whole immigration thing would work out.
My partner and I are both Canadian citizens, but I don't know if that does us any favours...
:) Always wanted to go to Canada...
Please let me know if you visit the Toronto area! I can set you up with room and board!
This is the person in the Netherlands that I'd like to work with
17:23
:D Deal! My wife used to go to a big swing dancing competition in Toronto every year...
haha wow
Jelmer was my professor
(I realize Netherlands != Holland)
ORLY?
We recently converted him to Nengo and now he's doing some really cool stuff.
17:24
Awesome guy, did some cool stuff with eyetracking and workload with him
(not that he wasn't doing cool stuff before)
We should get him on Cogsci :P
Wow: thats a cool research line!
Nengo sounds really complicated. Is it just a very very very big artificial neural network that holds some biological plausibility?
Nengo is just a tool to build spiking artificial neural networks without back-prop. Spaun is the very big artificial neural network that has some biological plausibility.
We're working on improving the biological plausibility.
17:34
30 min!
17:47
Do we have to click anything, or does it just start when it starts?
it should just start
Ok, thank you
Hello!
17:56
hi
hello!
Hi, good to see you all :)
I guess @Josh, @honi and @ArnonWeinberg might still join.
shall we wait for a couple of minutes?
17:58
Yup. Until then, we can talk agenda.
Sounds good to me
