well, just spend 5 rep on downvotes, haha

@ArtemKaznatcheev I don't think this q/a is so bad... OP asked for a term, and one was given. No one asked for a definition or anything, so no elaboration is really needed

@Jeff oh, I like the question, and I don't dislike the accepted answer. It is just the second answer that bothered me

oh

@Jeff True that!

A: What level of initial research is expected on questions?

Steven JeurisWe somewhat established non-experts are welcomed here. Of course there is a good chance that 'consensus' mainly originated from this site having more non-experts than experts. Is this a problem? This is really difficult to analyze. In its current form this site is trying to be open to experts a...

@Jeff it wasn't a terrible answer, but not quite what I was looking for either

Sorry for continuing linking to it. But I do so because I truly feel that's the common ground we should be trying to find.

what were you looking for ben?

Something specifically to do with choices, not generally information. "paradox of choice" kind of works but I was hoping for something more formally accepted

@ArtemKaznatcheev Then up vote the comment Ben left.
@BenBrocka You could rephrase as a more specific question.

paradox of choice is a term used in the literature, though personally i prefer 'choice overload' (re: my comment to that answer!)

(in a new question of course)
@ArtemKaznatcheev Wow, that is low effort. That OP did not google 'Identicle strangers' as he originally formulated it.
I definitely down vote stuff like that.

a question I really want to upvote: cogsci.stackexchange.com/q/688/29 but can't bring myself to do it because the user has not shown initial research :(
This is a beautiful answer: cogsci.stackexchange.com/a/690/29

@ArtemKaznatcheev cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/685/… Happy with the comment I left behind? :)

@StevenJeuris solid comment.
I followed your lead and made another comment.

@ArtemKaznatcheev Right .. we have to remain optimistic! :)
I'm calling it a day.
I feel we made some progress in our ongoing discussion today!
Nice talking to you all! See you later.

cheers!
I should go, too. I have done a good job of procrastinating on reading this thesis... and should really get back to it now
Is this an example of a positive effect of structured procrastination? :P

@ArtemKaznatcheev I should consider tagging that question with my name.

I just posted a possible FAQ based on Stats.SE that could act as a starting point: meta.cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/232/…
let me know what you think.

@JeromyAnglim Thanks! I'll check that out

thoughts on this suggestion?

A: How should our FAQ define us?

Jeromy AnglimI think this is an important question, and it does provide an opportunity to summarise the huge amount of meta discussion that we have had already about what the site is about. The following is the start of a possible FAQ based on the FAQ for Stats.SE (aka CrossValidated). If you think this is ...

@JeromyAnglim oh, you already posted it :P

@JoshGitlin hahaha I have more rep total than you now :P

@BenBrocka Yes you do. Looks like I need to post more freehand circles to MSO :-p

my bad on the downvoting yesterday. I am writing an answer to the question now
It might be appropriate to take disciplinary actions against me

6:30 PM
You weren't committing vote-fraud or voting out of line in any way. In retrospect it was probably a poor choice for us to bring up so many posts by the same user though (though it's hard with a site this small)
It could have been handled better but it wasn't anything inappropriate

@BenBrocka and @JoshGitlin can you let me know if you think my answer is out-of-line?

@ArtemKaznatcheev I'll check in a little bit, busy with work. A quick scan shows no serious problems

@ArtemKaznatcheev Looks completely fine, I did leave a comment though

@BenBrocka yeah, I saw the comment, and I agree with it.

Looking over the downvotes he got, I frankly can't contest any of them. It's just the timing that was bad. Really most of the DVs were explained but in old comments

6:43 PM
I am wondering if I should comment on and flag the answers that are really comments
or just ignore it
I feel that if I do so now, then I really will be targeting the user :(

This is why you should do those things when the answer comes up, rather than acting on several posts at once when you think about it
In general the conjecture answers are just bad answers though, not comments. Only flag if there's no attempt to answer the question or they're just something like "I wonder if this could be Y" and no useful information is present
