Q: Defibrillating Health.SE

DoctorWhomSeveral of us feel that we need to call a code on this site and assess viability. It's edging on unsustainable. To summarize, we propose we add a professional MedicalOverflow to foster a professional community, and decide what to do with HealthSE - refine and rename, vs reboot and rename, vs en...

12:46 PM
@michaelpri @JohnP @Susan What's a good way to reach former members of Health.SE which are inactive now? (Regarding the defibrillation question)

1:04 PM
Update: Proposal for a site for medical experts to foster an active group of medical experts: Please sign up!
https://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/113660/medicaloverflow

10 hours later…
10:44 PM
@Narusan The only good(ish) way I could see is to ping them in chat, but that's tough is they haven't been active at all on SE in a while

@michaelpri - I don't understand something here.

A: How long can an allergic reaction last after exposure to an allergen?

CCRNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has defined food allergy as “an adverse health effect arising from a specific immune response that occurs reproducibly on exposure to a given food." Food allergies are abnormal immunological responses to a particular food or food component, us...

A professional sounding non-answer followed by the summary:
"So it will be better to intake antihistamines or consult to doctor or allergist."

Reading over that question now

It seems reasonable to deduce from the last line that the user could not possible have written the answer. Indeed, it's largely plagiarized copypasta which is so easy to detect (it took me about 25 sec total of my time.)

How did this get two upvotes? And a more personal question: do the mods read answers here? (I'm not trying to pick on the mods. But seriously, how does this stuff slip through?) I don't know. You know I was overinvolved as a mod. So it's not my problem. But it surprises me nonetheless.

Regarding the two upvotes, I would guess that users either didn't read the whole answer or didn't care that the answerer plagiarized
And to be honest, I think we've really dropped the ball as a mod team

@anongoodnurse Hi, long time no see.

10:59 PM
@Jasper Hey, a blast from the past! Hi to you!
@michaelpri on one question or in general?

@anongoodnurse I sort of changed my email. Maybe I will send you one now so that you have mine.

In general
Personally, I think that not being a medical professional in any way was a huge detriment to me being a good moderator

@Jasper Great! Look forwrd to it, and tell me how things are going while you're at it! :)
@michaelpri You're the best mod here, If I recall correctly. So don't get down on yourself (I know, I just got down on you. I'm sorry.)
@michaelpri I'm sorry to hear that. Do you hold out hope for the site?
Are the CM's helping any?

@michaelpri It's OK. Just don't let being a moderator affect your work as a medical professional =D

Just being here puts me in a not-so-good place. Please forgive me for my accusations. I don't want to add to your troubles.

11:03 PM
There have been a few times in the past couple of months where I've thought that maybe we stood a chance. Sometimes we had a few knowledgeable users who were giving really high quality answers and I really thought we'd start to get better, but it seems that the quality of the site inevitably degrades again.
No worries about the questions. I think it's good to be able to talk about the site :)

Yeah, that's going to happen for a very long time.
I'm sorry, again.
You know what kind of crazy mod I was.

@anongoodnurse Wait, I thought you were a mod here, now you are a mod on parenting? lol

It was really good for me to distance myself; I was too wrapped up in this being a great site to let it develop normally.
@Jasper No, I haven't been a mod here for a very long time.
@Jasper I love parenting. So, yes, I'm a mod there, and was before I was a mod here.

It's interesting how you change from a mod of one site to another. You are the only case I know about.

Very different kind of site, tho.

11:06 PM
@anongoodnurse I do miss with working with you as a mod :(

@michaelpri And you were always the sweetest person I ever worked with.
I hope I can say that without offending you. You know I'm old enought to be your elderly grandmother! ;)

@Narusan You can always leave a comment under their post, for example.

I think "sweet" is great. Take it to mean wisdom, kindness and forgiveness.

Thank you so much! It means a lot coming from you :D

@michaelpri Oh, Lord, what a pain I was.

11:09 PM
@anongoodnurse Why would anyone be offended by sweet? Only a nutcase, lol.

:D
@Jasper Oh, I dunno. Sounds old fashioned.

@anongoodnurse I didn't help that situation.

@michaelpri And school?

@anongoodnurse By the way, I have deleted many account on ELU. I don't currently have any there. These days I just hang out in ELL.

I do have hopes that this can kickstart the site back in a good direction though. Time will tell.

11:10 PM
@JohnP It was mostly of my own doing. Don't kid yourself.

@anongoodnurse It's going well, just started back up again last week

@anongoodnurse Shush. :)

@Jasper You've done that before; is this for good?

@michaelpri I'm going back to school, actually.

@michaelpri And your favorite subject (what a grandmotherly thing to ask!)

11:11 PM
@anongoodnurse Well, I think I will keep the ELL account for a while at least. I kind of like it there.

@JohnP Good for you!

@anongoodnurse Probably chemistry

@anongoodnurse I don't think you are that old, young enough to be a mother, not grandmother, lol.

@michaelpri Impressive! Really.
@Jasper I am a grandmother, and it's high time!!!

@anongoodnurse I have a bachelors in comp sci, but my original degree work was in kinesiology. I missed my degree because my GPA at the time was a 1.99. I never did anything in my general ed classes, it dragged me down. So I want to finish it.

11:12 PM
@anongoodnurse Thank you! My teacher's the main reason I like it so much

@anongoodnurse Well, 10 year old boy and 10 year old girl can make babies. It has already happened, lol.

@michaelpri Good on you for that! Chemistry is a tough subject, glad you get it!

@michaelpri Organic Chemistry was one of the most interesting courses I ever took. My word, I used to have dreams about molecular reactions.

@JohnP Thanks! and good luck on finishing your degree :)

@JohnP "my GPA at the time was a 1.99" Ahhahahaha! I can laugh, because at one time, my GPA in college was 1.89!

11:14 PM
@anongoodnurse I tried to memorise the Krebs cycle but failed, lol.

@anongoodnurse I think that we're only going to touch on organic chemistry this year. My sister took it, though, and said she really liked it

@Jasper At one point, I could draw out every amino acid, etc.

@Jasper Krebs and cori cycles are difficult to memorize. I had that as part of the kines, and IIRC it took me nearly two weeks before I could fill in a chart full of blanks on it.

@michaelpri If you like chemistry because of the teacher, I don't know about O. Chem. But stay away from P. Chem. No teacher on earth can make that interesting!

I think I could maybe do 1/2 of it correctly now.

11:16 PM
@JohnP I have never heard of kinesiology, what is it?

@anongoodnurse ooh ooh! Microbiology!! THAT was a fun course!

@anongoodnurse What I liked about physical chem was the equations and graphs, some were nontrivial.

@Jasper it's the study of the mechanics of body movement

@Jasper Study of human movement. At the base level, PE teachers, personal trainers, athletic trainers.

@JohnP Micro is fun. But I never took a Biology course that I didn't like.
@Jasper Oh, noooooooo.... I'm going to have a nightmare tonight!
@JohnP Did you know that I used to be a Molecular Biologist?

11:18 PM
@anongoodnurse No, I did not. But it does not surprise me.

If a 2015 message is still on the star wall in this room, it means not many things are starred here, lol.

I actually did that before deciding against it as a career and applying to med school.

@Jasper This has historically been a very low activity chat room.
We have to keep unfreezing it for inactivity.

Ha. With a 1.8 at the end of my third semester, I wouldn't have gotten in, anyway.
I thought I wanted to teach college Biology.
The politics of research was just too much for me.

@anongoodnurse I did fine in my core classes, but my general ed just never seemed to click. I never did the homework.

11:21 PM
@anongoodnurse I probably won't be taking any more chem classes until college, so I won't be able to take organic until then anyway

@JohnP Yeah, that's a reasonable deduction when one has that GPA.

@anongoodnurse I agree, I have a friend getting her PhD in computer science and she has several horror stories about the process and the research infighting.
@anongoodnurse Not surprisingly, I let my fraternity get in the way of a lot. I should never have done college then military, I would have been much better served doing military first.
Hah. served. I crack myself up.

@michaelpri I hope you love it. I did, and it really opened up a new world for me. Because of that, I was invited (invitation only) by my prof to take Biochemistry. That led me to Mpolecular Biology. It might still be my first love.

hang on. Gotta go get the 17 month old off the cat tree.
again.

@JohnP OMG, for me it was my sorority!
@JohnP lol!

11:23 PM
@anongoodnurse He;s a climber :(
@anongoodnurse Which sorority?
I was a founding father for a Delta Upsilon chapter.

@JohnP a local one: Beta Delta Phi
Kinda local. Nothing big, that's for sure.

still cool.
@anongoodnurse ZOMG. They still have an active ANGELFIRE page!!!

Well, this was fun. Sorry @michaelpri. You're a special person. I wish great happiness on you.
@JohnP lol! I don't even know what that is.

@anongoodnurse You too! Nice talking to you :D

Off to check it now. :) Bye, people.

11:26 PM
@anongoodnurse Angelfire was a free webhosting page back in the mid-late 90's. A lot of fringe/conspiracy websites seemed to congregate there.
@michaelpri Not at all. You are the best mod here. I am sporadic at best any more, which probably has not helped stem the tide of mediocrity.
