A[{1,n},{1,n}]
What does this mean for a square matrix $A$ of size $n \times n$ ?
Is it taking the first row and first column?
am confused witht he syntax?

@BAYMAX This syntax is bit confusing., I never used it. btw, it should be
A[[{1,n},{1,n}]] not as you wrote A[{1,n},{1,n}]. But you can see what it does by inspection.

Nice! thank you@Nasser , that was much clear yes I should have used A[[..]]

Ok, glad it helps. I never used it before actually myself. good to know one can use it.
Overall, I find Matlab matrix syntax the best. It is easier to understand. easier than Maple, Mathematica, Julia, Python, etc... THis is because Matlab was originally designed for matrices.

Yes
but the symbolic expressions in mathematica are ncier
I use MATLAB mosly and hence perhaps find the syntax in Mathematica tricky
