I'm not sure I found any great use cases yet, but it looks like you can defer evaluation of your dynamic expressions to the helper kernel of the front-end using Evaluator->"System":

(note how the kernel manages to keep the time in sync only in the second example, since it doesn't spend any time evaluating the Dynamic content)
