I seem to recall someone on M.SE made some tools for discretizing PDEs to be solved as a set of ODEs (method of lines). Does this ring a bell for anyone?
Nevermind, figured it out. It was @xzczd's pdetoode from mathematica.stackexchange.com/a/127997/6358

I should write a tutorial about writing my tutorial...
(i.e. just how one builds a fully-functional website with Mathematica)

Has anyone attempted or knows of a project that makes a "workbook" type notebook? I mean a notebook that contains fully functioning notebook objects as child notebooks in a TabView. With all the child notebook objects sharing the same context (not the Global context) such that a Needs or symbol evaluated on one child notebook object is available to all child notebook objects.

@Edmund have you received my e-mail? :)

I am finding the notebook interface very limiting for larger workflows even with expand/collapse of sections. I would be great if I could have a "workbook" where each child notebook is some major step in the workflow. Then I would be able to easily switch back to some previous step (say, step 2) alter a result that is next needed in some future step (say, step 6) without all the scrolling and expanding/collapsing
I'm thinking Excel workbook that has multiple tabs but instead of a spreadsheet each tab would be a notebook that shares the same context as the others. Would need a new file extension it
@Kuba Hi. Yes. I also have not book a room as yet. I too need to sort this out.

Hello, I was thinking about how I could visualize the total derivative of a given function $f: \Bbb R^2 \to \Bbb R$. The total derivative of a certain point is just some 1x2 matrix which I could visualize in a 3D plot. Now my idea is I could place a Locator inside this plot which you can drag around and the total derivative is dynamically updated to be the derivative matrix at the point where the locator is. Is this posisble?
I don't want to open a question on how to do it if the idea is not even feasible.

Nevermind, I found something here

Asymptotic expansions have played a key role in the development of fields such as aerodynamics, quantum physics and mathematical analysis, as they allow us to bridge the gap between intricate theories and practical calculations. Indeed, the leading term in such an expansion often gives more insight into the solution of a problem than a long [...]

@halirutan No news about Jan (J.M) ?

Has chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mathematica-editor-button/… stopped working for anyone else using Vivaldi?
Nevermind, I am an idiot :P

@rhermans No. Still nothing.

@halirutan :(

@halirutan do you have a phone number or anything besides email?

8:15 PM
@ChrisK I don't have a phone number but I have everything else. However, he said he is moving to a cheaper place, which makes his address invalid. Actually, at least 3 people contacted me and asked if I have heard anything at all. One of the people is Silvia. Although she doesn't contribute here anymore, I stayed in contact with her over the years. She also has a lot of information about JM (for reasons I don't want to share publicly)
but cannot reach him either.
Another person who contacted me suggested contacting the embassy. I'm not sure if this was successful. I looked up our German embassy recently and I'm thinking about writing them. However, I'm not sure they are willing to help or if they are even allowed to help a complete stranger to find another person.

@rhermans @ChrisK @all Can anyone say something about if the embassy could help?

8:34 PM
Everyone who likes Compiler and internal datastructures should visit Twitch NOW

@halirutan I'm a fan of this one, although it's a bit sad that they're not discussing a truly general OOP layer.

@b3m2a1 Would you know who the guy with the really deep voice is who sounds always really calm?
SW: "What the heck is this..." Guy: "It's something you wrote and none of us understood".. I'm laying on the floor.

@halirutan I don't know that one

@halirutan IDK, is J.M. a German citizen?

Although he's often at these core-language meetings so I'm assuming someone akin to John Fultz or Tom Wickham-Jones?

8:44 PM
@ChrisK No. Otherwise I wouldn't have to contact the embassy. I would simply get into my car :)
He comes from the Philippines.

Yeah, I just figured based on first name, he might be an expat there
any other Filipino users or donors? seems like we need someone on the ground
one thing I just read: "the government operates mostly using English."
so at least we've got that

9:01 PM
@halirutan wait I did some digging and that's Daniel Lichtblau
I tracked down the three main voices there, I think, and it's interesting, maybe indicative, that there's no one with a comp sci degree there. It's not necessary to be a good developer, obviously, but for discussion of low-level data structure implementation it seems as if it'd be useful.

@halirutan There is no harm in asking. Do you know @J.M.'s full name?
I think we can rightfully say that our concerns represent the concerns of a group of interest with thousands of members. They may answer, I don't know about investigating thou.
@ChrisK I agree that someone local would help. Do we know where in the "province" he mentioned he was moving to?
@halirutan In any case the relevant embassy to contact would be the Embassy of the Philippines, in our respective countries.

9:56 PM
@halirutan I think in some really old chat log I remember J.M. mentioning one of the Stack Overflow people being also based in the Philippines and potentially interacting with them? Can't entirely remember..
Anyone know if it's possible to get MathJAX to wrap at window width or something?
I have a post here: wolframcloud.com/objects/b3m2a1/tutorial/using-mathematica/… where about two-thirds of the way down I show a complicated solution to some equation that Mathematica found
Unfortunately most of it clips as it extends beyond the window width

10:19 PM
@b3m2a1 Network went down right in the middle of the live stream. Annoying.

@halirutan you hit the highlights I think.

@b3m2a1 You seem right about Daniel. It's his voice.

They didn't really resolve much about what these optimized data structure objects would look like.

@b3m2a1 Who were the other two main voices?

I think the others might have been Rob Knapp (based on someone calling him Rob and a post about the FEM stuff that I think he was involved in) and Itai Segev (the one who often criticizes SW vociferously).
I also found a video of Rob Knapp talking that seems like the right voice

10:23 PM
@b3m2a1 Ah.. nice.
@rhermans Yes, I know his full name.
@rhermans Are you certain? I believed I should rather contact the German embassy on the Philippines.
Because they are there.

Sure but is the Philippines government is the one with access to voters, and civil registry.

@rhermans OK. My line of thought was that my embassy can easily contact the right person there who has access.
@b3m2a1 This seems relevant

Q: MathJax word wrap

Matrosov AlexanderI have configured extra processing for MathJax with this code below <script type="text/x-mathjax-config"> MathJax.Hub.Config({ tex2jax: { inlineMath: [["$","$"],["\\(","\\)"]] }, "HTML-CSS": { linebreaks: { width: "container" } } }); </script>...

@halirutan May be you are right. In any case, we don't loose much if we ask everybody. I can volunteer to send some letters. But I would need all the info available.

@rhermans Our embassy has an online contact form. I will try this first. I'm certain if it is indeed the wrong way around, they tell me. In any case, drop me an email and I keep you in the loop.

OK, my turn to gripe. I work on a notebook at the office, where I have two monitors (yippie). I save the notebook on a cloud service to continue working at home (not yippie) where I only have one monitor (definitely not yippie) only to find out that the Notebook remembers where is was earlier in the day and opens on the 2nd, nonexistent screen (throwing bourbon shots instead of taking bourbon shots not yippie).
Is this a situation that others have experienced, and more importantly, resolved?
