@Szabolcs are you planning to answer about Slider[.5, Appearance -> Tiny, Appearance -> "Labeled", Appearance -> Tiny]? I was trying to find a good reference to support 'first option takes precedence' but couldn't find anything but 'common sense'.

@Kuba it's how options are handled by OptionValue so it's how one expects them to be handled in general (the box-language just does weird things I think).

@b3m2a1 it is a side effect of intentional cherry picking like ControlToBoxes implementation
 
@Kuba I didn't realize it was intentional. I just figured it was grandfathered in from an old, inconsistent implementation.
 
Reordered adjectives :) to point that they didn't plan this issue but it is caused by design

@Juho You seem to be more knowledgeable about this, so could you suggest a reasonable algorithm to implement in C for graph colouring? There seem to be many heuristics in use, with varying implementation difficulty, and I'm not sure which is worth implementing.
