8:59 PM
I'll tell you my career path:

okay. Fire it up.

I started as a chemist...
and at the Free University of Brussels,
they once had a chemist that used up 55% of all computing resources
of the supercomputer they had...

(by using bubble sort on a 1000000 long table)

Aargh!

9:01 PM
No... not me! ;-)
so from then on, Chemists were required

I hope so. That hurts my little programmer's heart! ;D

to follow the same course as IT guys in PASCAL programming
so I got a good start in programming

Ah. Okay. But PASCAL is pretty easy, isn't it? It's like BASIC with more strictness so that you can use it for science, right?

and IT was my hobby.
Not at all...
PASCAL is more like C but with:
strong typecasting
(no uninitialised variables allowed)
strong syntax

Not? I thought so. But no braces syntax, I remember...

9:04 PM
actually: everything C lacks.
instead of {}
you use: BEGIN END
so also more verbose!!!
anyway...

I never did anything with PASCAL. But my physics/IT teacher loves it (Delphi actually, but that's at least the same now...)

So I started looking for jobs before my military service
and no jobs to be had as a chemist...
and tons of jobs as IT

I started maybe 4 or 5 years ago with TurboBASIC I found on an old 5 1/4" Floppy laying around in the basement... :)

So I started 6 months before military service as EDP-Production lyaison Officer...
:D
CDCPascal for me
and then TurboPascal!

Then came QuickBASIC for quite a long time and finally I moved over to Java and some very basic C++

9:07 PM
then military
then again:no jobs to be had, so I started working as a programmer

Thank god I can skip that part...

analyst-programmer, analyst
network engineer, database admin, system engineer
then IT manager, IT director

wow. nice!

Got fired for gross misconduct (wrongly)

not so nice...

9:09 PM
;-)
then IT Project Manager, then teacher of English/French
:D

How many years did that take you until you reached those positions?

Then again: lost my job 2 months ago... (replaced by cheaper person)
If you give me your e-mail address for 1 second (and then delete it) I'll send you my CV...
You'll have mine too!
Nathan has mine already, so...
:P ;-)

Erm...

or do you want me to give mine to you???

okay.
got it.
Sorry for being paranoid... ;)

9:13 PM
send me a mail and I'll send you my CV...

Firing up thunderbird...

I'm still on Evolution! :-)
So now looking for a new job...
... 3h/day: looking for jobs anywhere in the world.
(I've left Russia already, so only a few 100 Km from you now...)

Evolution? What do you mean?

Mail & Calendar program
Old Novell Linux Software

Ah. Did not know such a prog exists...
Where are you then? Germany?

9:17 PM
Belgium...
Tongeren.

Don't ask me where that is... I am not that good in Geography ;)

Oldest city of Belgium:
Roman era
Funny! Even your email doesn't contain your real name!
You should have my CV already!
(no picture though)
Anyway, anything else you need?
Bank account?
Picture of me and my girl-friend?
>:)
I'm the one talking to a wall now! :P
ping me when you get back!
Oh, and don't try to SMS me: I've left my phone at my sister's...

Sorry, mum rushed in and asked me about how my exam was. She has priority!

Mum always has, until you've got a girl-friend!
(prepare her already!)
or your GF will hate her for the rest of her life!

I wish I had one, but not yet... :P Time will come.

9:23 PM
:)
It has its advantages and disadvantages...

I know. I have seen that problem.

Now you have rules, alone there are only your own rules...
then with two again: more rules...

And the rules of the guy owning the house.

not really...
I own the flat in Moscow...

Let me read what you wrote up there quickly...

9:25 PM
There are still 2 people living there
ping me when you get back here...

@Fabby I'm finished. No need to escape :)

:-)

I have two mail accounts. One for general online stuff and everything related to programming and a private one for school, job and close firends.

answering questions!
ah! Even though I sent you my CV, I'm still not part of "job"! :D

And no, the fiber wire from Belgium to BW seems to be a bit slow today...
I did not beg you for it, you wanted to send it!

9:28 PM
Lemme thing. license plate letters?
No, you wanted to know about my career! :P
takes a lot of hard work though!
what's the longest working day I've ever had???
(guess in hours)

Well, I would not have needed that much detail...
Erm... 30?
(ducking, running)

39
What other people normally do in an entire week, I did in 1,5 days...

Oh. Wow. Didn't you get caffeine intoxication after that?

Correct that: what normal people do in 3 weeks, I did in 1,5 days!
I'm about 3* faster finding solutions behind the keyboard as anyone else I know...

Respect. Which job was it? Higher or lower?

9:31 PM
Project Manager...
I did the job of a:
Network Engineer, PC engineer, Printing engineer, DB admin, Windows Engineer, application engineer with just the help of one server engineer
The guy couldn't believe his eyes!

The prejudice usually is that managers are busy with polishing their shoes and killing Crazy Chickens (Moorhuhn in German)... Wow again.

(he also was the one who gave me the best professional compliment I ever got)
"Now that I've worked with you, I finally see what the advantages of a good Project Manager are..."
:D

I bet he will tell his grandchildren of you... :D

I also as an IT director replaced together with the French IT Manager and the German System Engineer
an entire department of US personnel of about 20 for an entire week!

Anything you could not replace except the coffee machine?

9:35 PM
(although we only did emergencies and "normal" stuff had to wait forthe other 20 to come back...)
I can make a mean espresso using just charcoal! So I can even replace that!
(thought myself that in the army!)

Eeww >.<

My boss, the global Executive VP knew, but the rest of the US personnel didn't

Why would anybody want to drink that?

you don't understand:
with just water, coffee and a few branches off a tree
I can make a mean espresso using my grandmother's coffee machine...
;-)

<-- giving himself a facepalm

9:38 PM
So when the 20 people walked into the office and only saw three people sitting there
and not a pile of work waiting for them, they couldn't believe their eyes...

I believe that.

But I even had the CEO's PA come down to my office to hand in the CEO's laptop as "I didn't even know where the CEO's office was in that entire building"

I just compared Tongeren to my home village on wikipedia while we're talking. You have almost exactly 10x the inhabitants we have.

and we were only 3 people! :D
But Tongeren is a City!
(with a medeival charter to prove it!)
Is your town a Hanzestadt?
;-)

I live in a 900 years old village somewhere between Stuttgart and Ulm with about 3000 people on slightly over 6 km²...

9:42 PM
cool!
I' was just looking up BW

You can walk through the river through our village in rubber boots - far away from a "Hansestadt".

There doesn't seem to be a BW...

What's the word for small river?

ah! with S
Brook

BW = Baden-Württemberg

9:43 PM
That's what I was looking at...

It's the federal land in the south-west. The 2nd biggest one.

I thought that was Bayern!

Bayern is in the east. The biggest one.
This is BW.

Ah! I thought you were trying to be cryptic and giving the License plate of your town
:D
Anyway...

Nooooo.... It's just that Baden-Württemberg is too long... Like Mecklenburg-Vorpommern or Nordrhein-Westfalen. Nobody always types them. So: BW, MV, NRW

9:47 PM
so you never use your license plates to say where you're from?
I'm from K

Well, that would be too easy... ;)
K is Köln (Cologne) in Germany...

or M or B
or KA(rlrühe)
Actually, an (ex-) colleague of mine use to live in DAC
and he told me that if he took his car on holiday to another country

It's Karlsruhe.

he used to get a temporary license plate of M
sorry!
Forgot the S

Oh, the Nazi place...?

9:50 PM
(this is 25 years ago)
yup...
if he didn't, his car was always vandalised...

I was there as a school trip one day. Horrible.

I read a lot of literature about that era
and actually, don't forget that the Nazi's came to power through a "Putsch"
they were at one time the biggest party, but they never had a majority!
And I also read Anne Frank's diary in the OV

I hate history to be honest. that doesn't interest me at all, at least in school. I just sometimes talk with my friend who is an expert and feel ashamed for my little knowledge...

but also a German girl's diary
and she was in the female "Hitlerjugend"
(forgot the real name, it was different for girls)
Well!

Why are you typing always ü instead of u?

9:53 PM
History is important to understand the future...

It was BDM (Bund Deutscher Mädel).

Typo!
YES!

But not the type of history you get served in classes.

(also 20 YO)
that I read this...

They teach you this event, that event, when who let a fart and so on, but not the overall context.

9:56 PM
yeah...
I'm falling asleep...
nice talking to you...
shall we continue some other time???

I will fall asleep as soon as I finished learning for that exam tomorrow. :P

Go study!

But it was a nice distraction... ;)

C U 2morrow!

See you tomorrow then!
@Fabby Still online? I just wanted to say that you email still did not come over... :P There seems to be a knot in the wire

10:03 PM
22:17 in my sent items...
:/

Local time in which zone?

CET???
yours???
:D

Also CET (UTC+1).

lemme look again...

You think I know where that time zone border is?

10:05 PM
no NDR....
So it should have arrived...
only 247 KB
PDF

I can refresh and refresh - nothing.
I send myself a test mail...
Arrived in less than 5 seconds.
But yours is not showing up...

Just sent an urgent test of 1KB with a return receipt...
Urgent message should jump to the head of the queue...
did you send from let's say hotmail to your other mail?
because on the same server it's bound to work!
job mail on another server?

No GMX-->GMX.
I try from hmamail...

:D
that's not a test!
you should send from one domain to another...

Oh, forgot they only provide inboxes >.<

10:09 PM
That's why I use gmail: global presence!
It used to be my test mail only!

You mean TLD?

:D
no, I mean 2 different servers in 2 different locations, regardless of TLD
you can have a German server with a .COM address

Lemme think what I could use...

I meant from hotmail to GMX
or gmail ,or hotmail, or yahoo mail

I tried "sendanonymousemail.net". That way I don't have to create accounts...

10:12 PM
good!
tracing route to your server
12 hops
let's see if smtp is available
telnetting to your mail server
port 25 closed...
your server seems to have a problem with incoming stmp mail...

Okay...
Nice. :-/

nothing yet? Not even the urgent mail???

This to "email made in Germany"...
Nothing. Not even the test.

did you have enough time to open the picture?
I'm not bullshitting you!

Did not see it, except that it looked like a mail prog bar...

10:17 PM
(I feel akward now...)
You should have had enough time to see that...

it's a screen shot of my sent items...
Oh, I would appreciate you not calling me by my first name...
(in the general chat room)

I saw that now too... But what shall I do? Go over to GMX and flagellate their technician?

Wait...

I stay with Fabby.

10:19 PM
I normally get a reply from google if the mail cannot be delivered after 24 hours..
(or maybe it's 12. can't remember: hasn't happened a lot lately)

GMX usually replies immediately...
Except when it is dead, of course

Wait until the morning when the engineers walk in...
Then start torturing!
Now!
GO STUDY!
:P

I will wait until noon after I come back from Physics... Yes, master! ;)
