A: Why can't I tune my Floyd Rose Tremelo?

Dr MayhemSnapping strings has nothing to do with using a trem. A trem in the right position, will let you tune your strings quite happily to the right notes, so you have a separate problem here Aside from raising the trem up to gain more upwards movement, what else have you done? Are your tension springs...

everything else seems ok. 1 thing I can point out is that even though the floyd is staying flush with the body, for the strings to run flush to the neck, I have the high E end of the trem significantly higher off the body then the low E end of the trem. I believe I was that way before I did any adjustment, though

That does not sound at all right. On all the trems I have, be they Floyd Rose or other ones, they are always parallel to the body

so it should be completely parallel in both directions?
why, dude? its a separate thread about a separate topic, since i took the neck shim off.. please, no need to be the thread police

no - nuway, it is a dupe. The question you are asking, and the answers you will get, are exactly the same. I assume you do want help, yes? In which case, this will get you answers.
and yes - I do need to be the thread police. It's part of my role description :-)

whatever man.. don't want someone policing my threads like it makes any difference. Its not a dupe since my situation has changed. Now i have to edit this question because my neck is no longer shimmed nor do I want any upwards motion.

3:47 PM
nuway - trust me on this. You may not think it is the same - but it is. You have some major problems with your setup - we can help, if you want help, but we also have our site rules, which you must adhere to. Part of the way this site works is to make sure there is value to others in future - closing off dupes is one of the essential activities.

so why dont you help, brother? the pics are in front of you
hey

Read my answer - your problem is a combination of those points. You are using a crazy tuning, tuning your strings to too high tension, your springs are too loose on the back

so what do you think
im not using crazy tutning
trying to tune it to E
it alwasys had 3 springs
and that worked fine
so why would it need more?
even so

@nuway that is not E tuning

?
how do u figure.

3:49 PM
you can run from 3 to 5 springs depending on tension required
It's a bizarre tuning - and is almost certainly half of your problem

it is E tuning (im trying to get)
ok tell me this

E A D G B E is normal tuning

right
and thats what im aiming for

Which is not what you have written at all

not at all
read it again
i said the order of tuning the strings is
E-E--B-A-G-D
not the tuning im going after

3:52 PM
? So do you mean you are on standard tuning?

yes?

In that case you are either an octave too high or you need to sort your spring tension
now the two things you can do on tension are:
angle your springs - so instead of 3 parallel springs, make the outside two angle out to the outside spring holes
or tighten the screws holding the spring anchor to the guitar body

ok - explain this to me - in the pics - you can see that the floyd rose is at its lowest (it can't go any lower) - yet action is crazy high
crazy high
even if i put 5 more springs in the back - the action wont change
cuz the trem is at its lowest
does the neck look ok to you?

The pivots for the floyd rose are fine - your second last picture shows the trem sitting at its correct angle. But as per your requirement for more 'up' you can raise the pivots and keep the trem parallel with the guitar surface

i dont want more up anymore

3:56 PM
The action of the trem, ie how much it is tipped up in your last picture, shows that the tension is wrong
okay - ignore the up, it doesn't change the problem

but do you see that the action around 20fret is super high
and i can't lower the trem anymore

you are putting way too much tension on - and if you are snapping strings, my guess is you are tuning an octave too high
@nuway you don't need to lower the trem - it's irrelevant
it's the angle

of the neck?

your second last pic shows the action is fine
the neck is fine, the trem height is fine
your tension is wrong

nah man
action is not fine
its way to high

3:58 PM
not in your second last pic

thats just the angle
look at the second pic
from top

looks good - what is that 3 mm?

off the fretboard or off the fret?

the fret

prolly 3mm off the top of the fret
thats craqzy high to me
i want it way lower

4:00 PM
okay, if you want it lower then, a shim is a perfectly valid way to lower that if you need to - as long as the shim is across the neck fully, so the whole neck is raised by one or two mm
this doesn't affect anything to do with your trem
leave the trem where it is

but what im trying to say
is guitar used to be fine
it was setup super low
without any shims or springs
i took it apart, put it back and now its all off

okay - have you bashed it at any point? from the pics I can't see any major problems that would require a truss rod adjustment

no but i messed around with the truss rod (just experimenting)

Okay - that can change the action height

how

4:02 PM
by a mm or two
it affects the bend of the neck
as in how much the neck curves up or down

right now, the truss rod is in its flatters
it doesnt turn any more

hmmm - do you know how many turns you gave it?

a bunch
maybe i broke it i dunno

possible, but not that easy

neck looks flat tho, right?

4:04 PM
I've only ever broken one and I was being a complete idiot with it
It does look flat from your picture

yea i was eing an idiot with it too
i dunno. i refuse to take it to a luthier :)
i gotta figure it out myself

okay - there are a couple of posts on truss rods, however that wouldn't have anything to do with your trem going up at that angle
might sound silly but first - confirm you are tuning to the right octave
then have a look at trem springs - I always change springs when I change string gauge

ok
ill check the octaves
it its the octaves, that would be insane

the spring check is really easy to do though - you can play around without taking the strings off

yep

4:10 PM
pull back on the trem, and tighten the spring bar
or even pull out one spring end from the trem (or the anchor end) and move it so the spring is at an angle
oh, and do check your string gauge - if the new set is bigger, it will require more tension from the springs to keep the trem flat

yep
i just dont get it
how did Eddie have 2 springs in the back?
he used 9's right?
maybe he had 3
